@@preshooesI wonder if it has anything to do with how alot of the fanfic is based on the book characters that the show is based on. Some ships are between characters that never appear on the show. So less connection between written characters rather than characters that have actor counterparts?
@shadownight3030 reminds me of this one fic with Gordon Ramsey at Hogwarts. Think it was called 'Harry Potter and the Lack of Lamb Sauce' or something like that
I’ve always found AO3 to be a fascinating website because the way the site is structured doesn’t include an algorithm that pushes content at you. So all of these connections were user generated with very little input from the site itself. Somehow, almost everything in this graph is organically produced which means there’s a lot of faulty tagging from writers especially newer ones who don’t know how the system works. I think this graph is really good, but if there were a group with more extensive knowledge of how the system works *r/ao3* were to clean up the tagging based on their own interests it could be even better.
that sentence with this profile picture is such a wonderful combo. ao3 tags really do contain horrors beyond human comprehension, and im living for it 🫡
All visualizations like this will end up looking as you described. The data points are scattered around randomly at the beginning, and is gradually refined. There's an attractive force to the center of the screen and a repulsive force between each dots, forming the overall circle. Dots that are connected by an edge also experience an attractive force. After enough time, local "groups" will naturally form the mold like clumps.
Ive done some work with that dataset before, the "redacted" tags are tags below a minimum number of uses, so that the tagset stays somewhat anonymous and you cant identify a fic by a unique tag! Really cool analysis here! :]
the largest and densest "character information bubble" (top left) all being episode tags for an semi-obsecure peter pan children's cartoon that ran for one year and had 65 episodes is killing me. On first glance I thought it was a TMA bubble. I have never been so curious about a show and it's online community in my life.
I looks like the grey blot to the upper left of the Freeform graph is from a series of orphaned fics that the writer tagged with full episode numbers and titles from Peter Pan & The Pirates (1991)
As a fanfic writer/reader of old, it's very appropriate that the highly specific smut ended up being colored lime. Never ended up writing on A03 so none of my data is included though. I'd stopped writing fanfic by the time it came about. Looking forward to the high res maps.
dude that sounds like a sick idea, sadly my current workflow doesn't really allow for that and i fear processing an entire animation would take weeks, but maybe ill get around to optimizing and streamlining in the future :)
Some observations about the longest link: From Deng Lun to Ye Xiu, all the links make perfect sense. There's a bubble of Chinese RPF that crosses into Chinese dramas. DMBJ is kind of between c-drama and c-novel, and as a novel it is affiliated with other webnovels like TKA (back in the day there were lots of Chinese fics that included both Wu Xie and Ye Xiu). However, the link from Ye Xiu to "Happy - Character" is really interesting. "Happy - Character" is currently tied to the Fairy Tail character named Happy, but in the fic that links them, the tag is actually used to refer to a esports team called Happy in TKA, and the appropriate canonical in this case would be "Xing Xin | Team Happy." It's super fascinating that a simple mistagging leads you from c-novels to anime, and then to Marvel. Another interesting link is Jack, which is just such a common character name. How did you/the dataset deal with tag hierarchies in this project? Jack is a parent tag of all the Jacks and links every Jack together, which might be what brings us from Harry Potter to Identity V, a Chinese game, and then back to c-drama land. It could also be that, like before, someone used the general "Jack" tag instead of fandom-specific tags, but there is no way to find out using just the AO3 search, which shows all sub-Jacks when you filter using the Jack tag. Anyways, thank you for sharing this! The high-definition maps are so fun to parse through.
This vid is more important than you know! I feel like UA-cam is mocking me. Just today I spent hours working on a spreadsheet with metadata of fanfics in a specific genre on Ao3 for a university project. If I'd known about the data drop file, I could have chosen to only focus on specific years for my research question and made my life a lot easier...
I love that in the top/middle of the smut cloud there is the Fashion & Couture tag. You have to look your best while fighting for your life in the sheets.
Oh man, I would love to see this for every year, and then ask if you could do this every year (if it's not too much of a bother) and see how things change over time. You have a wonderful voice, by th way.

id love to see a graph of fandom tags tags, so we can have a crossover map, one with the size of nodes being "number of fics" (to allow for low crossover fictions to be seen) and the other being "number of other tags its crossbred with" to show us the most crossovered fics

I love the freeform map, there are sections with just different characters needing hugs and a surprising large amount of people being family to each other.
I love this, I'm really curious to see the morphing of the characters graph through the years, so like you show first 2021, and then 2008-2021 but if you were to make every year separated (with the same colours) and see how the focus moves
I have never been more happy about having posted my first ever ao3 fanfic in 2021 and not later, two of my fanfics have contributed to that first graph and that's just so neat to me!! I'm in this picture and I like it
I am proud of the smut and angst I consume and help create on the gorgeous AO3 being so vast and powerful. Trully, I'm sure there's some incredible writers amongst us, the unhinged ones

honestly, thinking about it, whenever I see pirate or medieval AUs they always seem to be pretty dramatic, so I guess it makes sense
Probably bc it's easier to dramatically injure ppl without modern medicine and hurt/comfort is a pretty big genre.
Lots of people like writing about characters with a priest kink.
two of my most favorite things combined, statistics and fanficiton :)
great video
this is one of the most important big data analysis ive ever seen xD
also you sound very deutsch
ja moin und ich dachte mein Akzent wäre nicht so schlimm lmao :D
@polber4268 - You aint seen nothing yet!

this is a brilliant idea, i absolutely love this. would be really cool to have a search function on these graphs but there's also something fun about zooming in and meandering about and seeing what i recognize
this video is truly what the internet was made for
I love the the relationships one just decided Femslash needed it's own color, we associate with other femslash fandoms than we do with the straight relationships in our own fandoms LOL
True :). Kind of like RL.
Really cool video :) And quite interesting to see how this data lays out, I also enjoyed the wikipedia graph video thoroughly which I probably why I got recommended this one today. Makes one wonder what other large archives might be worth mapping. Anyway, thanks so much for doing this, and for sharing it with us all :)
sharing is the most fun part of it all, glad you liked it! :) Not David also made a cool video about anime friendship graphs if you're yearning for more
@@verymuchtom Ooh I'll have to check that out, thanks for the rec!
11:32 the exclusion zone around game of thrones wiped me out 😆 great video!
this is so cool!! the graphs are very very very nice (i struggled so much in my data visualization classes lmao gelphi and i are definitely enemies), and it’s really cool to see how the different tags are related! crazy to see that the game of thrones ships are all very isolated from other media- i’m really curious why this is the case!
15:30 the frowny face for the smut tags is absolutely cracking me up
This is so cool!! It’s videos like these that remind me how amazing the internet can be ❤️
I feel like UA-cam is mocking me.
I looked at the .jpg s and I am in awe. 😂
Thank you for sharing your work!
If I may make a suggestion: save pics in .png to avoid losing image quality when possible.
Yes, the file size will be bigger, but it wont be blurry when you zoom in.
And with so many letters, the file size is worth it imo. 😅
oh i did, but they are 400 mb each lmao :)
id love to see a graph of fandom tags tags, so we can have a crossover map, one with the size of nodes being "number of fics" (to allow for low crossover fictions to be seen) and the other being "number of other tags its crossbred with" to show us the most crossovered fics
7:58 seeing john lennon just off the coast of the hermitcraft belt hit me like a truck
Scrolling through the relationships petri dish I was entirely unprepared for Dimileth (Fire Emblem 3H) to be neighbours with Thomas Jefferson. Really enjoying how instead of a blob FE forms a long, reaching strip to brush with various smash bros crossovers and touch the main genshin blob, with various little genshin enclaves dotted inside.
In the hunt for resident evil I took a wrong turn at the star wars road and got lost in the self-insert plains. It's been 20 minutes
I love how most maps look like the freaking Anomaly from Arcane, an organic organized mess, and then the relationships map looks like an item from the Risk of Rain 2 DLC.
#hermitcraft spotted in gray-blue, just left of center frame
Oooh boy suddenly I have a plan for my evening
game of thrones being separated from everything else is very funny
Oh my goodness it's a biblical accurate lore blob of fandoms!
