I have always found this sort of software to have a slight delay, but more than usable. Much better than having to wear kit on your head, and so, so much cheaper than say a Tobii unit. With the right software, a system can work on your phone instead, if you don’t have a webcam. Playing in low light can be an issue I have found as the webcam struggles to see your face. It gets choppy and very delayed. Configuring the tracking is the trickiest part, but worth the investment of time. I’m currently playing a lot of Snowrunner and it is such a pain that it doesn’t really support head tracking, and boy do I miss it! Head tracking makes a massive difference to both game play and immersion, so I would certainly recommend people try it. Definitely try the Opentrack route before you buy expensive hardware and see if it is good enough for your needs
You have got to love the ingenuity behind this and for a relatively small entry fee. Shame about those with glasses but as you said the head tracking should be more than adequate for sim racing. Also loving the accessibility. Thanks for the video 👍🏻
I just had a quick go with and without glasses. With glasses on it still worked ok, would need some further research and trial and error to know for sure, but it was at least driveable (ETS2)
With my steering wheel in front of me, there's no practical place to plant the webcam; so on top of the monitor is the only option here. But for other desktop gaming, setting the camera below the monitor would be the solution for wearing glasses.
Tried your config file and it made everything much better. Thank you. It was out of control before that. But I need to loosen it up just a bit since I'm using it for flying.
@@mrj3217 His cofig settings are in a tiny 2kb file - in the info below the video - that you download and drop in the file section of the Beam Tracker.
Great test. Just bought it :) Works great but the lag/delay is quite noticable - approx. 300-500ms. So it's no instant turning. But your (highly appreciated!) profile smoothes that out nicely.
@@mangs9940 Jolly Comb 720p@30Hz But the camera picture itself is without any lag. The tracking preview in Beam-Eye is also super quick and almost realtime. So it seems it's the OpenTrack processing afterwards.
Thanks for the review and config file. Impressed. getting a good result. using a Logitech brio 4k. 60fps @1080p. better than i expected. not 100% perfect but usable. still need to play with settings.
I'll have to give this a go in DCS world when I'm not in VR. Would be great for that game... Or BeamNG as well. I find that in racing games, the movement effect messes me up :) Great piece of software though! Thanks for reviewing :)
Hi, on rf2 it works quite well but what to setup on ir that camera would not react to track hils it is not consisting like in your video, maybe calibration should be only my head and not catch body?
do you find or think that this might be helpful for people on single monitors being able to get abit more fov/being able to see the sides abit more or is it just for immersion?
Yes, definitely. You can set up the system to move your virtual view as far or as narrow as you want. If you just want a bit more FoV then you can easily achieve that with minor head motion. On the other hand, if you want to create a much further view, it will do that too. For example in ETS2 I just use Opentrack (note I have not tried Beam yet), and with a larger movement of my head left or right, the on-screen view goes through my cab and then looking backwards down the side of the lorry. Brilliant for reversing! Do give it a try. Try it with the free software like Opentrack alone first. If you want more from it, try something like Beam as an addition.
This is why I started to use trackir4 again, now it doesnt only help with other cars near me but with my spatial awareness in general, everything feels more 3D. I had to fiddle a lot though with the tracking sw, physical and ingame seating, now I dont even drive without it. This sw seems to be a great solution without much investment.
Upgrading from G9 49" to 57" soon and watched your other videos also on headtracking. Curious as to which do you prefer, this Smoothtrack or something else?
Smoothtrack performs at a lower latency, so that gets the technical win. Also, the processing workload is offloaded onto the smartphone. But I wouldn't say it's an advantage that puts me off Beam Eye Tracker when choosing between the two. And using a webcam is always a bit more convenient.
@@SimRacingCorner Thank you because your so much smoother than my camera was 1080p 30fps That`s why I would like to upgrade my camera up to 90 fps. I think my problem was solved
If you can find a webcam that is 720p 120fps, go for it! From the developer's themself, Beam Eye Tracker does not benefit from very high resolution and it can unnecessarily increase computational demands. Always prioritize fps over resolution for this. I use it with a old Logitech c922 set to 720p 60fps. It does fell smoother then 1080 30fps. Hope that helps!
You can turn it off. I do say this in the video, and emphasis why I use it for purpose for the demonstration. I wish people actually watched videos properly before commenting.
I tried different ways to install Beam Eye Tracker and got every time black screen with cursor. On taskbar I see image of Beam, but can't do nothing except close the window. Please don't talk to me about "usual suspects" like DEP, AV, firewall and so on! Aitrack with Open Track working OK. Open Track with neuralnet too. The only thing I haven't done is change the graphics drivers.

Thanks a ton for the review! Quick tip: if the top rim of your glasses obstructs the view, placing the webcam below the screen is an option. Enjoy!

Ahh excellent to see another video on this....
Good work, yet again.
Thanks mate. Downloaded and ran today on ACC and Dirt Rally 2. Scratches the itch that vr gives me without all the hassle. Easy win.
Wow that looks cool, being able to do all the tracking without putting on any funny tracking markers or clips on your head, gotta try that

Great to hear!
Thank you for your OpenTrack Config. That worked really well!
Just had a quick drive with the demo on ETS2, it works pretty good 'out of the box', just make sure your pitch and yaw is not inverted in Opentrack.

I appreciate that!
thx for sharing your config 👌🏼
I have just come across this thank you for your file setup it has actually made it so drivable.
for some reason mine is inverted when i look to the left it displays the right is there anyway to fix that if you know?
When I need to calibrate it, the start button is gray and I can't click it. What can I do?
Cannot w8 for dynamic foviated rendering with triples :) They need to up the refresh rate of it.

How do I set up eye tracker for games.do I need more software to run as well?.
There's no extra steps. Everything shown in the video is the setup.
Can this be used to stabilize the camera thus negating the "eyes welded to the chassis" effect that ACC has?
This is my issue with head tracking in acc, I love real head motion but understandably it doesn't work with this, unfortunately it's one or the other.
If I play in 2k do I need the webcam to be in 2k resolution as well? Most on the market is 1080i cameras
No, the webcam resolution is unrelated to the monitor size/resolution.
Drop what file into the profile or folder?
What kind of camera do you use?

@ The webcam frame rate is definitely going to affect the latency, so it is important to have at least a 60fps webcam.
@@SimRacingCornerThank you. Any news? Are you still using your camera and beam? If so, is the outcome still satisfactory?
How should I choose a webcam? 4K 60fps or 720p 120fps? Thank you

What about MSFS2020?
It will certainly work, and there's a demo you can try if for yourself for free.
Tested with a demo. TBH, I did not like this at all for sim racing. Too much delay. Maybe it's good for flight sim.
The quality of the webcam is probably what's holding you back.
Can the Standalone version of Beam Eye Tracker be used in Steam, or are you required to use the Steam version of Beam Eye Tracker.
It doesn't matter.
