Hey Luke, a good tip for getting even coats with a rattle can spray is to put it in some hot water and/or run it under a hot tap for 30-40 seconds. Like shaking the can, it can help to atomize the spray. Don't overheat obviously! I've had good results with it.
Always wash your figures with warm soapy water before painting or clear coating......they use a mold release solution...sometimes referred to as mold soap....so that the pieces of the figure will come out of the dies easily during manufacturing. There is always a thin or sometimes not so thin layer of it left on the figures and paint does not adhere to it well at all. Washing the figure well first using a soft toothbrush will remove that stuff and give you a nicer result that will last longer and look much more even sometimes just a good wash will even knock down the shine a bit too as some of that reflection is the mold soap itself.....great overview I'm really looking forward to the inquisitor from this wave myself

Thanks for the reviews man! In terms of the shiny ness on obi wan, definitely definitely wash the figure first before you Matt spray it. Some dish Soap and water. The figure can come from the factory with oils, sometimes mould release oils and this can have adverse effects on the paints, not sticking, peeling, incorrect finish etc. plus, handling the figure can transfer oils from the skin too so it helps with that. With Matt spray, you really have to shake it too, when you think you’ve shook it enough, shake it some more. It can also help to leave the can of matte coat in a sink or bowl of warm water for a brief period of time before using it. When matte finish isn’t warm and mixed properly, it can dry cloudy and white on the figure. Hope these small tips help.

Hey man! I haven't sprayed black series figures before but I've been paiting Gundam models for almost a decade. With Mr. Super Clear, its not a very heavy top coat and its pretty finicky. If it was too warm or too humid that can change how they dry. Especially if you change temps or humidity quickly right after spraying. I've noticed that if I'm going to spray outside that its best to do so on a day that matches the conditions of my house. Also, if you start spraying off of the figure, and then sweep it across, you'll get a much more even coat. Plus, you'll avoid the spattering that happens when you first start spraying from the nozzle. Hope that helps!

the kenobi figure looks great and im excited for it, but man i thought the headsculpt would be a lot better judging from the sw celebration picture. it is an improvement and it looks good from a side view but facing straight it just looks like it could've been better. thanks for the review Luke!

With an exacto knife and some heat to get a clean cut around the shoulder about half an inch does wonders for this figure !!!! Opens up those butter nicely !

I had the same trouble yesterday : I've matt sprayed one fig (Migs Mayfield, Morak, transport trooper disguise).
First coat (after an alcohol cleaning) : it happened fine. And then, I've spoted a missed area, and I decided to run a second layer of matt spray.
And..
It became shinny...What ?!?:! Yes Really.
I'll retry tonight, by heating up the spray can under hot tap water.

You could try a light coat of black/grey wash and then matte clear coat. Might help a little but I think the end result you got is pretty good

There's a cleaner called Purple Power that I've used for years to clean off acrylics and spray paints from models, it won't affect the factory paint but I would recommend using gloves when working with it. I'm not sure what it causing the gloss new figures, it could be a sealer or on unpainted parts, it could mold release and that may have caused the reaction to the matt sealer you applied.
Glad you fixed Ben. Maybe acetone to remove the clearcoat if that happens again?
Fun fact: Acetone WILL NOT affect face-printing. I've tried using acetone to take off some face-printing multiple times. It doesn't work.
Dope review. Very informative. Be cautious of the background music tho. At times the chime sounds got really shrill and overtook your voice. Keep up the great work!

Obi Wan - looks more like Matt Berry, which could be quite funny and possibly x-rated version xD. Tala looks great! I would not mind if they put out more female imps. I particularily like the looks of Captain Tolvan - at least when she was still a captain and wore a trench coat/duster.
Can't wait for the Bastilla and Malak reviews. I wonder what the best method is to make that part of her outfit brown rather than reddish. A brownwash perhaps?

Hello Luke thanks for reviewing and sharing your thoughts on the new Kenobi figures. The fourth sister looks good with the shinyness toned down. Tala looks pretty good as well and now we have a female Imperial officer figure for other figures that can be made. Obi-Wan looks like his robes have a layer on them with the anti shine spray, not sure what you can do about it. 🤔
I'm looking forward to getting the new Obi-Wan figure. I really like the blue shirt Target exclusive so that's the one I have right now.

I totally know what it’s like to use Matt Spray on figures. I remember last year I was doing a TASM 2 electro custom and tried to figure out how to keep the paint from chipping. I sprayed it with Matt spray and it’s seems to have worked out so far. I don’t know if their are better alternatives but that seems to be work out for me.

I am pretty much just starting, and it is helping me out a lot! It can get overwhelming, especially when I want to buy everything! I'm still looking for all of the original characters. I have Vader, C3PO, and Lando. I know I have a loooonnngg way to go, but I'm enjoying it! I can't seem to find an R2D2 (all black series btw) but one that's reasonably priced. I have thought about doing just Hot Toys, but again, it needs to be reasonable. Do you also collect Hot Toys? Sorry for the long reply. I'm just excited about collecting! Kenobi def needs a matt coat. That shine makes it look like he’s soaking wet.
Great review… that face sculpt… stunt double vibes. Also, fwiw the oil on the figures could be mold release. I’d wash your figures with soap and water before spraying them, that may help. When I customize or airbrush figures I always give them a wash first. Ymmv, good luck LL.

What lighter colour did you use to dry brush obi wan? Also do you use the spray as a sealer for your paints? I've recently got into painting my black series and even after the paint dries it feels a bit sticky to touch - not sure if I have to use a sealer to fix that.

Dilute acetone down to 50/50 and use Q-tips if there is more of that caked up spray bro :)
Hey brother, when I get a really shiny figure, the first thing I do is nuke some water with a little dish washing detergent in it and submerge it like I would if I were popping it apart. Let the figure sit in the near-boiling water for a minute, pull it out and let the figure cool down naturally. You will be shocked by how much of the shine the figure loses.
