A few extra things I’ve learned from other UA-cam videos & playing: - Always keep an arm’s length from who you’re marking. This way they’re less likely to successfully turn around you - Stay goal-side of your player - You succeed as a defender either if you get the ball OR they are forced to pass because you’ve contained them successfully by jockeying - If in doubt, kick it out! - Stay on the balls of your feet / don’t be flat footed - Don’t forget you can block their shots with your body!
Success as a defender is simple - your man does not score. Some players you want to be closer than arm's length, some at and some further. You can get up against a player and keep your quads pushing into his hamstrings and push that way (never gotten called on that). You can also be right up against and use their body to spin off, like an NFL lineman; it allows you to quickly channel your momentum in a different direction.
you don't learn what you do wrong until you get skinned by someone way better than you. I got nutmegged 3 times in one match by the same guy in similar situations. I never made that exact mistake again though.
I played soccer for 6 years all midfield and wing but then I took a 2 year break because I lost my passion. I'm coming back this season and I'm going to change things up and try defence. These tips will be a great help.
As a cb/rb I really needed this as last season I would focus more on attacking than defending causing my team a couple of goals but now I gotta focus on both
I am thirty and play football(after a gap of 12years). I am not quick these days so I watched your basics of defending videos and I implied just 3 techniques consistently and practiced them a lot in my mind on my way to the ground. Now even the best dribblers of the club players are finding it tough to go past me. I just corrected my stance when closing in players and that has made me earn respect in my team as a defender. But I am watching many videos/matches and defenders are losing because of not using these basics. You are seriously an underrated channel. You deserve more
Because most coaches view defense as simply having to react to what the offense does. A good defense can dictate the offense. Control speed of attackers, channel ball carriers to certain space, etc. Defenders need to process a lot of incoming information constantly...who is where, where is the goal, is your man a shooter or a passer, can I lure a pass that I can then cutoff... All these things are calculations you must make over and over in a game. You have to adjust to your opponent's (individually and as a defense group) style and strengths. If they want to play blitzkrieg offense you figure out how to slow them. If they are methodical you disrupt them upfield. Most of all...keep your own offense out of your defensive area. They are generally lazy as far as sticking with coverage and it's always best to keep them up front so the other team can't overload your end. Defense cannot win games. At best it can hold a zero/zero tie. Only offense wins games so make your offense stay upfield and scoring.

But isn't it obstruction going after the player instead of the ball? 4:35
Atl Flores no because you are cutting off their access to the ball. It is cutting off their way of control. Therefore, it is completely playable
You don't necessarily have to run in to them, just be slower and they will run into you.
