- THESE 8 CHEESES ARE BANNED IN THE UNITED STATES!
In the USA, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has a lengthy and detailed set of regulations on cheese. As a result, there are a large number of traditional European cheeses that are actually banned in the USA. Remarkably, this is because they are deemed unsafe for consumption. The reasons why these have been banned vary from one cheese to the next. In fact, one of these cheeses was even named the Most Deadly Cheese in the World by the Guinness Book of World Records!
What we're looking at today in this video is a list of 8 famous cheeses that are banned in the USA but not in Europe. Why are they banned? Are there any alternatives if we really love that particular cheese? Should they be banned?
Brie de Meaux - 0:46
Epoisses de Bourgogne - 1:09

Reblochon de Savoie - 2:15

Thanks so much for watching our video! We were shocked that so many of these cheeses are deemed unsafe in the USA. Do you think any of these cheeses should NOT be banned in the USA?
I love that we can’t have these cheeses but they do allow spray cheese 🤷🏻♀️
Fr
Exactly. Healthy, living cheese banned -- dead fake cheese, a-ok.
There is no decent cheese that is not made from raw milk. I'm glad I live in France.
You're very lucky indeed. We're so limited here in Australia. Can't wait to get back to Europe next year!!
Well, there ARE plenty of decent and even some very good cheeses made with pasteurized milk. Raw milk is crucial for certain cheeses. I'm sad we can't get real brie here. The brand I get is better than many here that are about as interesting as cheap, processed cheese.
La Tur is an Italian cheese that's made with lightly pasteurized milk so it's a compromise. It's freaking delicious. (At room temperature it gets noticeably funkier -- so timid cheese eaters may want to eat it cold.)
(For instant macaroni and cheese, stir small blobs of La Tur into hot pasta. Add lots of fresh-ground pepper.)
I've long suspected that European cheeses tend to be healthier than the average American cheese. (More beneficial microbes.)
We do have some great cheese makers -- and as long as the cheese is aged, raw milk is often used.
Can you imagine, we are still alive over here in Europe! 👍😂
I know right!!
If the US regulated the conditions in which the cows are raised as the French do, we could safely consume unpasteurized milk and cheese. Letting the French cheeses be sold in US is a terrible abuse of power. Americans get sicker on bacteria infested meat than they ever could on imported cheese, and that’s what should be the main focus. However I think I agree we should skip over the maggot infested cheese….Yuck!
Agree with everything you've just said. Animal care and hygiene is at the centre of making unpasteurized milk cheeses. And most commercial dairy farms in the US and in Australia simply don't meet those standards.
Nothing but facts 💯☝️
It's so funny reading this from people who eat meat treated with God knows what and lettuce with feet flavour. Yummy
ps: i'm not French
@@NoName-hg6ccreading comprehension is important
@@sanakimchi88 Yes it is. Did you comprehend what I wrote?
. Apart from Cazu Marzu this is utter madness. These are some of the best cheeses in the world. I’d rather eat these cheeses rather that any Macdonalds burgers!
Agree with you 100%. Casu Marzu might just be where I draw the line too. But the number of raw milk cheeses that are banned here in AUS as well is quite absurd.
It is Indeed Udder Madness...
Great video, but also an interesting name for a channel!
Thank you. The name reflects who we are 😁
Casu Marzu cannot be sold in Italy or Europe anymore
Concerning Epoise, I'm not surprised, as it's smelly enough that it was banned in public transports, even in France
Smelly indeed. But interestingly, that's not the reason why the raw milk version has been banned in both the US and Australia.
Not true.
But it can smell wicked
Sorry Seppos, your loss. More cheese for me, though im not rushing out to buy maggot cheese...!😮
my goal is to consume all these cheeses. thanks for sharing
You're very welcome. Let us know how you go with this! 😊
Sounds like these cheeses get in the way of someone's ego.
You're not wrong. There's definitely a political element to some of those bans
I remember maggots in cheese in France. It was unrefrigerated and had been left out for days.
That would happen anywhere unfortunately, pasteurised or not.
You put gooood, wholesome American cheese out there like that and you'll get some (suicidal) maggots too.
As an Italian we pretend that sardinia doesn't exist
😂😂😂
Just ate Brie de Meaux and the taste was magnificent. Loved it. Any cheeses that contain probiotics should be safe to eat. I personally don’t want to eat the maggot cheese, though. I live in Ireland 🇮🇪
Brie de Meaux is definitely something else! Do you have any recs for Irish cheeses?
@thecheesewanker Try Cashel Blue, Wicklow Bán, Durrus Óg, and maybe St. Tola Goat...!
Cashel Blue and Durrus Óg are so fabulous!
They just don't have the stomach for them! 🤣🤣
😂😂😂. To be fair, it's more of a political reason for some of those raw milk cheeses.
Saw another video and was ready to book a flight to France. Then saw the maggot cheese and nearly threw up. My need to visit Europe went with it.
😂😂😂. Maggot cheese is in Italy though. You might still be safe to go for France
It's just cheese mate, no need to ditch the country for it
Sardinia is not France lol
Maggot cheese are from Greece
@@goodbyehorses1281they do it in some area in corsica to 😂
Just came back home with some verrrrry ripe Reblochon..
Question
Why there's no american cheese in Europe?
Cuz it ain't cheese.
Hi from Zurich
Loved visiting Zurich as a cheese lover. Some quality cheese shops there!
Those cheeses shouldn't be banned but a warning label for the infirm and elderly is in order. (If you grew up on those cheeses I bet you could eat them with little worry.)
If we were to allow cheesemakers here to make similar products, we'd need formal standard in place for safety.
Silly question, but, since you don't mention it, does that mean that they actually pasteurize the milk to make roquefort?
Roquefort is exclusively made with raw milk. But, due to its maturation period, it meets the minimum requirements from the FDA in the US and FSANZ in Australia for import. And thank goodness for that!
Just got off work thank you, I guess the pasteurised milk thing makes some sense, however I’m not all that educated on why unpasteurised milk is not the best option.
Unpasteurised milk is more likely to have nasty bacteria in it. But when the animals are cared for properly, and the farming and cheesemaking maintains the highest standards of hygiene, there's no reason why raw milk cheese should be less safe than pasteurised milk cheese.
We never got sick from raw milk and brie and camembert are made from raw milk and we love it. In Europe we buy our milk more from the farmer. Raw milk product are very normal for us
@@tonnyengert I'm jealous. Raw milk is illegal to sell in Scandinavia. It's stupid.
Real cheeses = DANGEROUS
Cheese from a can = YESSSSS
😂😂😂
ofc you cannot have raw milk cheese in a country where a store can be sued if you get burned by coffee because you are too dumb to drink coffee...or need to tell people to not dry cats in microwave.
It is Udder Madness!!!
😂😂😂
I am perfectly ok with a cheese that has live maggots in it being banned from the U.S. ...
That's a fair call
Banned, no. Warning label, yes. I'm allergic to shellfish and tree nuts. They are not banned. They have a warning label.
You're correct about allergies. But sadly, a lot of raw milk cheeses are actually legally banned from sale in the US by the FDA. This is because they're deemed to be unsafe for consumption by everyone. Even though they've been made, sold and eaten for centuries in Europe.
Raw milk and raw milk products are unavailable in the US. Unless you have your own cows and milk then yourself and keep it on the down low. Unavailable to the regular person and consumer
I mean they also banned Kinder surprise eggs and wash chicken eggs sooo..
And collecting rainwater lmao
