This song is about the estate called Friar's Park that George purchased in 1970. The propeety included a 120 room mansion that had been built by Sir Frankie Crisp, an eccentric and successful attorney from the turn of the 20th century (1898). Crisp left literally hundreds of "homilies" or pithy sayings carved into the house walls. George actually quotes from these homilies in several of his songs. The house and George's immersion in Eastern religion proved to be the final blows against his marriage to Patti, who felt left out of both his obsessions. Ahh, that's where Eric Clapton enters the picture. LOL. The third disc in "All Things Must Pass" is some freeform jams George had with the band he gathered together for the sessions. To be honest, it's a lot of noodling that could have been left to the dustbin of recording history. The other 2 discs, of course, were great (although Phil Spector's over-production rankled George for years).

I agree for the most part on the Apple Jam disc, though Out of the Blue does have some nice guitar interplay and is worth a listen. The 2 studio discs are utter classics and forever music!

This is one of the most fabulous albums of the Beatles, as a band, or as solo artists. The production is wonderful. It includes several numbers which George had written years previously, but never managed to get John and Paul to agree to include on the Beatles albums. George was simply one who wanted to avoid conflict and disruption, as noted by many of his songs' lyrics. Yes, George was a couple of years younger than John and Ringo and one year younger than Paul. Other marvelous songs from this album include "Isn't It A Pity (Version One)", "Let It Down", "Beware Of Darkness", "All Things Must Pass", "Hear Me Lord", and "Out Of The Blue" from the "Apple Jam" third disc of the set, which includes some great guitar duet between George and Eric Clapton.

In one part, George is talking to John and saying how he has so many songs, but if he only gets one or two on each Beatles album, it'll take forever to release them, so he's thinking he should do a solo album. John was very supportive of the idea.

Blue Jay Way, Think For Yourself, If I Needed Someone are another delightful, less-known three.
George always had a biting, judgemental aspect, and could fly into a rage. I recall his ex-wife said that post-India George swung between weeks of prayer and meditation, and drug--fueled partying. I'm not criticizing, but I am noting the irony of what beautifully spiritual music spiritual pain can inspire.

...and SO was George, clearly. Ringo too in his own way, king of the relaxed fills. And he came up with many of their greatest Sayings, 8 Days a Week and Hard Days Night are both things that Ringo coined! Guy please do Lennon and McCartney Beatles back to back for comparison. George was the youngest, that was part of it. He also didn't have as many songs, or great songs as John & Paul. But they were 2 of the greatest rock/pop songwriters ever, so no shame there. Or maybe he didn't develop quite as fast, since he was a few years younger. And John & Paul were partners, he was on the outside of that. Having said that, some of the best and my favorite Beatles songs were George songs: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something, Here Comes the Sun, Taxman. And All Things Must Pass is just full of classics, most of which could've/should've been Beatles greats if he wasn't held down/overlooked by Paul & John. He was just in a weird position in a one of kind band.

Hidden Gem from the greatest post Beatles fab 4. I suggest run of the mill from this album. George had a back log of songs written as he was usually allowed 2 songs per beatles album after 1965. His contributions on Rubber Soul and Revolver announced he was a songwriter as well. Isn't it a pity on the album may be his Imagine or his Yesterday. Just a wonderful statement.

You are correct, George was the youngest member of The Beatles. In fact, he was deported out of Germany shortly after The Beatles went to Hamburg because he was considered a minor! George did write his own songs and he always had 1 or 2 of his songs on all of The Beatles' albums. John Lennon encouraged George to release his songs on his own, (apart from the band), but for whatever reason, he never did while The Beatles were together. 🏆

John and Paul dominated the early Beatles because they were there before him and wrote music together whereas George being a few years younger had to learn to write music on his own and gain the approval of his bandmates and George Martin. George used to get one song per album and steadily his song writing improved until by Rubber Soul and Revolver he was writing great underrated songs that were some of the best on the albums. George had his own song writing style that reflected his more gentle nature and deep spiritual beliefs. His contributions in their later years were even greater still and by the time they split up he had an incredible group of great songs 6:45 large enough to fill up the best post Beatle solo album All Things Must Pass. Being a 14 year old Beatles fan when the band broke up I was devastated as were most of my friends. To us The Beatles were like prophets sent to us from the Universe to lead us. We grew up with them and watched their music change the world around us. At the same time as this relationship was ending, George could finally get centre stage and as a 26 year old ex Beatle, he had a lot to say. He once said that the ten years the band was together was like going through a lifetime of experiences for the average person. He chose a path of spiritual awakening beginning with the teachings of The Maharishi in India and eventually becoming a Hare Krishna devote. This lovely, peaceful man made such great music while in and after The Beatles. He was usurped by Paul and John but ultimately produced a powerhouse album as a show of what he learned as a Beatles but was never fully able to actualize it while with them. George known as the “quiet” Beatle ended up having the most to say. Thanks Fellas.

George was HORRIFICALLY UNDERAPPRECIATED in the Beatles, & if you watch "Get Back" you can actually watch/hear John & Paul talk about how they disrespect him by making it difficult to get one of his songs on an album! John at least felt a little guilty about it, but not Paul.
So he had this stockpile of incredible music once he escaped being under their thumb. I suggest you check out " All Things Must Pass", "Beware of Darkness", and "Behind that Locked Door.".
George has LOADS of awesome music to enjoy, & honestly, he was much happier when he handpicked friends to become the Traveling Wilburies!!!

If you get a chance to watch the Beatles documentary Get Back by Peter Jackson who did Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, watch it. It gives a great preview of why the Beatles would end up breaking up. One of the reasons is George had lots of songs he couldn't get on their records. He quits the band in the first episode and then mentions to John Lennon that they should do solo albums as well as the Beatles.

Your comment on age is spot on , not only with interpersonal relationships but when you look at respective inputs in the band it went in order of age. First 3 years of recording John dominates . Then 1 year John and Paul even . Paul then dominates 3 years then last year George starts to shine as they are breaking up and dominates first year or two of break up.

Yes! When La (hope I got the right name) wondered if George was the youngest, I was instantly impressed.
John and Paul met first, and Paul told John that he knew an excellent guitarist, younger than them at the age where younger matters. John was skeptical but, IIRC, was impressed when George could play Twenty Flight Rock, and George was in. Bottom line--George came later, and was younger.
Thanks for the great reactions, and great subscribers. 😁 Peace!

While they didn't stick strictly to the formula, generally the rule for Beatles albums was one song apiece on each album for George to sing and one for Ringo to sing, although on later albums they started giving George 2 per album and very early on, George's song were penned by him and even Ringo, near the end started writing some of his own stuff. Generally, whoever wrote it, sang it more or less for The Beatles.

Harrison absolutely wrote his own music and lyrics. He was great pals with other great musicians like Clapton (who I swear is somewhere on this triple album, isn’t the 6th side one long jam?)
    >> Someone probably wrote already: the contract the Beatles had with the record company limited only one song per album side that was NOT written by Lennon-McCartney. They’d been so insanely successful, this was demanded. You can go thru the album song lists and see this is so.
It certainly seemed like after 8 years of those restrictions, George’s dam broke and out poured 3 albums 😉 as this was his first released.

Yeah Mark, agree, we thought it was the end of music when they split up, not so much with the albums they all produced. This one is the best of all of them, 2 studio Classic LPs and the 3rd with the jams. Amazing tunes litter this album, try Art of Dying for a deep cut classic with a soaring guitar. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Paul helped with production on George's songs, after he finished with his and John's. John really did not show much interest in George's songs, yet George held the grudge against Paul. They were friends about a year before Paul met John. They were 14 or 15 years old when they met, George being the younger of the two.

@@jml-rj5re As I said, Paul supported George's songs after his and John's songs were in the can. In the Get Back series on Disney+, Paul keeps pressuring John for more songs. He falls short of saying "If you don't bring some more songs in, we'll have to use more George songs". He was holding a place for John's songs. But like you said, it was business. John and Paul was the formula that worked. A lot of the Decca tracks they recorded before working with George Martin were George singing cover songs. If that had been what sold the band and what Martin wanted, Paul would have been pushing that.

@@debjorgo It was all about who would guide the business end of the Beatles after Brian Epstein's death. Paul wasn't comfortable in being the adult, the leader, the manager. Neither were George and John in placing the burden on Paul. John suggest that Allen Klein become the manager and George went along (see Get Back series, tons of written information). Paul was afraid the Beatles would be ripped off by Klein and lose control over their catalogue of songs and recordings. Paul turned out to be exactly right, but George and John grew weary about fighting over the business end, Apple Records, etc.
Thus, it was George and John and Ringo vs. Paul about business, although John never really respected George's songs. Paul wanted for the Beatles to record All Things Must Pass. They were all but broken up (John left in Sept 1969 and then Paul went into hiding in Campbeltown, Scotland) when Paul's solo album and the release date for Let it Be conflicted. Paul then announced the dissolution, but attempted to maintain control over the business end. Klein won and raided Apple Records. Also, Klein went over McCartney's head and hired Phil Spector to mix and produce the Let it Be sessions. However, McCartney did protect John, Ringo, George's and his own solo careers by drafting Beatles dissolution papers. However, in 1973, John admitted that Paul was right about Klein the leech, and Klein then sued the Beatles.
Northern Songs were bought by ATV, who then sold 50% to Sony. Eventually, the Lennon-McCartney songs were owned by Michael Jackson. hee hee! Only recently (2017) did Macca finally regain control of the catalogue. Business frictions were high in the early 70s.
However, Ringo played on George and Paul;'s albums, and everyone played on Ringo's albums.

@@jml-rj5re I'm not sure what any of this has to do with how many George songs ended up on an album and the grudge George seemed to have against Paul well after Klein was out of the picture. Airplay here had asked why George didn't have more songs with the Beatles. I certainly agree Klein was the major, if not sole, reason the Beatles split.

@@debjorgo George's grudge against Paul was related to business and the Let it Be recording scheme, less so about songs.
Blame John, then. Notice that Paul listens to George's songs and vice-versa. John had no interest and became more and more isolated. George, I agree was uncomfortable pushing his songs.
However, I would agree or posit that George wrote the best songs on
      - The White Album: While My Guitar Gently Weeps
      - Abbey Road: Something, Here Comes the Sun
Something is probably the best Beatles song of them all. Even John recognized its power after Abbey Road was completed.

You should probably watch Jackson's documentary on the Beatles...really gives a perspective and you see the moment George quits, and ends up going home and writing "Wah Wah". Then, either read "I me mine" by Harrison, or audiobook it. These will answer ALL your current questions. The fact that both Ringo and John either sang or played on several of the songs in this triple album says it all....he NEVER asked Paul. Paul was also the reason behind Ringo's initial quitting as well...he quit before George did. The death of Brian Epstein was the actual death note of the Beatles...he was the one who kept Paul in line and smoothed over all the fraying nerves.

No, George didn't produce the Beatles but he produced artists on their Apple label. By the way, Steve Jobs ripped off that Apple image. The Beatles sued but for some reason, they lost.

George started writing songs much later than John and Paul and it took him a few years to blossom. I don't blame John and Paul at all. They were better songwriters until the last year they were together. John realized after Abbey Road that George deserved equal time on their albums and he said that on their next album, George John and Paul should each have four songs. But then John decided to leave the group, so there was no next album. It was all meant to be as far as I'm concerned. They grew apart, which makes total sense considering how young they were when they got together.
