note : Peyote is a threatened plant experiencing declining populations. It continues to be poached by short-sighted, unenlightened primates that lack any greater context for the world around them. Due to these facts, we would like to make it known that Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't wishes immense rectal discomfort/illness to those that unsustainably "harvest" peyote from habitat without making any effort to help maintain or care for wild populations of these plants and the entire ecosystems that they are members of, including the insects that pollinate them and the sympatric plant species with which they occur. We encourage you - the semi-conscious primate - to start expressing enthusiasm, curiosity, and RESPECT for ALL THE WILD PLANTS around you, not just the ones that can intoxicate you or which are supposedly "medicinal" (but which in all likelihood probably aren't). Stop taking from habitat and start giving back.
Preach, Brother! I’ve got a neighbor who’s been growing peyote as a hobby since 1969. Holy fk, he’s got a few… he just grows them nothing else. Cheers, from Southern Oregon (near Kalmiopsis.)
I wish people would just grow their own. There's nothing wrong with using psychedelics, but people suck and have to poach. I'd like to grow some for personal use but the legality makes me nervous so might just go the san pedro way. Both have mescaline just much lower content in sp.
I strongly agree with what you said! And cool video I like the cactuses I heard poaching is the number one cause of extinctions of plants im not suprised its very sad even worse the wild populations could be suburbs and grass some day THAT NOW THAT WOULD SUCK!

It's crazy to see bromeliads so mean looking in the desert. Down in south Florida I see airplants all over and it seems to cool to me that they're related despite having taken such vastly different evolutionary paths. Love your stuff dude - keep em coming.
I don't like using peyote because it is endangered and takes too long to grow. I love the trichocereus genus of columnar cacti. I am currently growing a trichocereus bridgesii and trichocereus Peruvianus and both are about 8 feet tall. They grow pretty fast with the right lighting and water.
Ye my pachanois grow probably like 15 inches a year. San pedro tea is what got me into plants, especially cacti. A coworker told me that him and a friend are gonna go to New mexico to find peyote (lol) so I just told him to buy or grow a trichocereus bridgesii instead.
The problem is that the people poaching probably aren't trying to grow anything. They have free lophs nearby, they probably have a market, and shortsighted greed does the rest. But even with the columnar mescalitos, I get wanting to have peyote in the collection. They have different alkaloid profiles, which is a fun an interesting thing to experience and compare. Just be smart about it.
Anybody recommend suitable cactus rootstock for grafting. I have used Myrtillocactus geometrizans, Stenocactus pruinosus. Mine is a topical climate and night temperatures rarely drop below 64F. I am from India and Mesa Garden seeds is my only option.

Hey Tony, just wanted to take a minute and say thanks for these videos. I found your channel while searching for fynbos-related videos (I'm a fellow Cape flora enthusiast; that series of videos was beyond awesome). Anyway, I've just been catching up on most of your recent content and wanted to say that your videos are really a moment of Zen and laughter at the end of the day. Hi, love watching you, I have a question about the Ocotillo in this latest video, I have three small ones that have never gotten leaves, so, I thought they were dead, but now one has bloomed an orange bud, is there a chance it won’t get leaves?
@@CrimePaysButBotanyDoesnt 😂 they are in pots, only about 4” tall, and I’ve had them about 2 years, bought from a grower in Arizona. I’m in 29 Palms, Ca, and would love to get these in ground, if there is a chance of them coming back.
@@mwaters47 put them in the ground ASAP or they will die. That's probably why they haven't put out leaves. It's much harder on plants to be in such a confined volume of soil (like a pot) than to be in the ground. The ground dries out much slower and is also not as prone to drastic fluctuations in temperature. Pots are like cages for plants.

Perhaps a way to discribe the smell of different things could be to approximate it to the common. For example the plant might have a pine and citrus odor combined with a sweet floral scent with a touch of skunk and cumin.
How do you go about finding a conservation effort worth supporting, knowing that your contributions will be used to help endangered species? Are the large charities like The Nature Conservancy and Conservation International doing good work in your opinion or would think that local efforts would be more beneficial?
I donated once to Nature Conservancy and I've regretted it ever since. The mountains of bullshit junk mail they've sent me have more than wasted the money I gave them back in the day. And they've really dropped the ball on managing and protecting a few parcels here in Texas.
