      He also described some fundamental genetics concepts with such eloquence. I was really amazed how good he was at describing them, my lecturers were always felt like they were fishing for words in their minds but he was just so smooth. I adored him throughout the video. I'm sure it helps to be a botanist since the fundamentals of classical genetics were first observed in pea plants, so botany is kind of just empirical genetics in some way.

    As someone who's enjoyed his main channel Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't for a few years now, I gotta say it is quite frankly bizarre to see him so clean and collected. Usually he's swearing up a storm about the state of suburban sprawl and stuff like that.

      they all think it is just chance that plants and animals evolve.
      Rather it's a combination of many factors including consciousness.
      a good example would be the evolution of mimicry and defense mechanisms

      I had a patient die of a heart attack because he didn’t want to take a statin medication (lowers risk of heart attack) because it’s “not natural, and it’ll interfere with my ginkgo supplement”

    This man is self-taught. I have followed him for a while. He has grown so much in popularity that schools now turn to him. He even answers someone who asks him how to become a botanist.

    I've worked in landscaping and have met several tattooed/rough and tumbled guys who have taught me more about plants than anyone else! One guy could tell you what any type of mushroom was just by looking at it

He basically says, "Im a low level/ working class person who isn't very smart" and then goes into a great botany mini lecture. The purposeful juxtaposition speaks to my sense of humor. The last part is based in my own experience being encouraged to code switch, change my hair, and cover up tattoos in order to "look more professional" Professional appearance standards are slowly changing but there is still pressure to soften accents and cover body mods....even in 2022.

      I would love to grow peyote for purely aesthetic and conservatory reasons but yeah growing your own psychedelics really makes a profound difference in the experience

      I didnt catch that question in the video, can someone time stamp it?. (Btw i also grow peyote and san pedros, peyotes grow about 1cm a year they start up their lives with 5 ribs and will add a rib abour every 5 years or so, so you can estimate a peyotes age by the number of ribs. I also graft peyote onto san pedro which makes it grow 1000x faster but it loses its “medicinal” qualities, over all really beautiful plants to grow and stare at

    7:09 I studied evolutionary biology at uni and wrote an essay on the plants of New Caledonia. The plants there are an amazing example of how geology can influence the diversity of plants; the soil has many areas with incredibly high levels of heavy metals interspersed with areas of other concentrations and the plants have had to adapt to tolerate that. Totally different plant communities can be separated by distances of a couple of hundred metres, and it's really fascinating!

    Dude it's amazing to see how far this man has come, just spreading the knowledge of botany. I remember watching his videos years ago and he was in Chicago going over ditch weed and other plants thriving in strange neglected places. Now getting a slot with a WIRED is pretty fuckin tight to see.

    Hands down my favourite episode in the series yet. I love the way this man talks. Between his casual use of scientific vocabulary without dumbing down and clear concise responses juxtaposed with his 'fuhgeddaboudit' affect, swearing and tattoos... I'm all in. I'd take his masterclass in hot minute. More like this! 👍

      You're in luck because he does do online masterclasses every so often, though they are not free. But he has a buckload of free and super informative content on his channel Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't, where he's out in the field showing all kinds of plants and teaching all about them.     Here's another reason why I love this guy. He's a straight shooter because @13:25 he breaks it down like it is. And even though I love plant medicine myself. I hate the recklessness with which it's handled and consumed in the psychonaut community. Because it's honestly really irresponsible, and there's a lot of misinformation that gets spread around and thought of as truthful. I'm always amazed at his wealth of information and I *love* his Chicago accent too. It feels comforting like our hometown 😃❤️

    Wired- very smart move. This needs to be a regular feature. Your audience gets the usual high quality content despite missing the dogs, most of the f-bombs, Joey's alter ego and his heartfelt signoff. His channel is a long form banger.

    Saw Joey in the thumbnail, had to click. As a generalist, I combine plants, animals, and geology to form intentional self sustaining ecosystems that human beings are a part of, so I have SOME knowledge of Botany .. but Mr. Santore is a proper botanist, and entertaining to listen to as well. He often reveals things that I either didn't know, or hadn't thought about in a while .. and that makes me better at MY job. National treasure, this guy.

    I've been watching his UA-cam channel for about two years now and the way he rattles off scientific names and rants about human encroachment on natural habitats is fantastic. Also, the way he talks to and about plants is pleasantly naughty, hilarious and all around awesome.

      @Colton Price, also, it’s not odd to give someone a second check just because they have tattoos. If you look at onsen (“bath houses” I think it’s translated to?), they usually won’t allow anyone with a tattoo in due to them having too much of a relation with the Japanese Yakuza. You may be able to slip on by if you’re a foreigner and “gaijin smash” your way in but even then they have the right to turn you down.

    I'm in the process of getting my qualifications up, and next year I'm hoping to get into a Botany course. This video reaffirmed my confidence.
    I've been interested in this for a while, alongside many other things of course, though I feel as though a structured environment would be better for me to learn more; I'm glad that Joey didn't put that down, and considered the individual.
    Joey seems like a lovely person, and incredibly knowledgeable. I wish him the best.

    My understanding of why Durian smells so bad is that in its natural habitat there's a large range between trees. The primary consumer of the fruit in the wild is the Orangutan. So the extreme smell is a way for the fruit to be easily found, consumed, and the seeds spread

      Do they smell "bad" tho? I always thought they just have a strong smell. Strong smell doesn't necessarily mean bad smell. Just a smell but with higher intensity.

      @@ub-4630 People who aren't familiar with the scent often describe it as meaty and rotten smelling when they first smell it. I thought it smelled like old urinal cakes and porta-potty, in my experience!

    The ones that parasitize the fungi we always called ghost pipes. I live in Mass and have a lot of woods near me and see all sorts of cool plants/fungi. The ghost pipes were super fascinating, the center of them looks like a swirled flower.

    Thank you promoting the Latin names of the plants. I insist on using them and some friends just roll their eyes and think it's stuffy... thing is, I need to only bring in cat safe plants, and I really need to be sure of what they are! For example, someone kept suggesting "bamboo" as a low light houseplant safe for cats, but turns out they meant something called popularly "lucky bamboo" which isn't even related to true bamboo and is poisonous

      Great point. When you use Latin names you actually know what the heck you’re talking about. People call things the wrong name all the name and generally don’t know what they’re talking about.

      There's so many common names for plants. I hate when products use the common name because I have cats as well and I've seen many different plants called the same common name. I do like when they actually include the latin name so you can tell if they're pet safe
