He also described some fundamental genetics concepts with such eloquence. I was really amazed how good he was at describing them, my lecturers were always felt like they were fishing for words in their minds but he was just so smooth. I adored him throughout the video. I'm sure it helps to be a botanist since the fundamentals of classical genetics were first observed in pea plants, so botany is kind of just empirical genetics in some way.

He basically says, "Im a low level/ working class person who isn't very smart" and then goes into a great botany mini lecture. The purposeful juxtaposition speaks to my sense of humor. The last part is based in my own experience being encouraged to code switch, change my hair, and cover up tattoos in order to "look more professional" Professional appearance standards are slowly changing but there is still pressure to soften accents and cover body mods....even in 2022.

7:09 I studied evolutionary biology at uni and wrote an essay on the plants of New Caledonia. The plants there are an amazing example of how geology can influence the diversity of plants; the soil has many areas with incredibly high levels of heavy metals interspersed with areas of other concentrations and the plants have had to adapt to tolerate that. Totally different plant communities can be separated by distances of a couple of hundred metres, and it's really fascinating!

The coolness and chill of this guy makes me feel seen as a plant parent who's neither lonely nor a mass murderer

This guy is definitely one of the coolest botanists I have ever seen. I'd crush beers with this guy.
