When I was very little, the grown ups would say that you know a durian is good when it's on the forest floor and the squirrels have gotten into it. Maybe that's how the first person who came across it got into it. I'm just surprised his smells like passionfruit. The first smell I often get from fresh durians is gas leak. I’m impressed you are so willing to try durian, as it has such a bad reputation. I’ve had it only once at a colleague’s house, who is from Thailand. His wife, who is also Thai, despises the stuff and makes him eat it outside on the deck. I hated it. It was the wet gym shorts+farts+weirdly appealing vanilla-ish scent that I just couldn’t deal with. I was able to swallow the piece I was given (outside on their deck, of course), but I refused a second piece and was honest that I did not like it at all. The only other foods I really, really hate are parsnips, fresh horseradish, and sea urchins. It’s a weird collection of hates, but we all have stuff we hate and don’t know why.
I hate beets. And I know why! They taste like dirt. Exactly like dirt. Also, they are intensely red and will stain everything within a mile radius when you slice one open. I have tried to like them, but I just can't. The other two things I hate are coconut juice (not the milk, the juice) and vegemite. Sorry, Australians. I got so traumatized by vegemite. It looked so good when I saw people eating it on toast online, so I had to try it. I ordered a jar online. I immediately made some toast the day I got it and spread on a thin layer. I almost puked from the saltiness. How did they manage to make something saltier than salt? Wow! It was bad. It was like putting a cup of salt on a piece of toast. 🤢 I am not picky, but damn. Btw, I don't like horseradish either.
In the early 90s, I spent a month in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia for work. There were signs posted prominently outside our hotel and in the rooms warning that durian was not allowed inside. On a day off, our Malaysian driver pulled up to a roadside stand selling durian. We bought some and they sliced them open for us on the spot. The smell didn’t seem that bad to me but we were outside next to the jungle. The inside of the durian looked like something out of a science fiction movie. I was almost waiting for the face hugger from Alien to leap out. I don’t remember much about the flavor other than I thought it was mildly sweet. I’ve seen durian for sale at specialty produce markets a few times over the past 30 years and thought about purchasing one but I’ve been afraid thinking our not so smelly ones in Malaysia might have been the exception and not the rule. When I lived in a house, I could have tried it in my backyard and not worry about the smell. But, now that I live in a loft building, I can’t take the risk of smelling up my loft and the entire floor.
