- A hands-on approach to music playback is one big reason why I'm into vinyl.

Hello. Thank you very much for your informative and comprehensive videos, which I am only just beginning to explore. Many many years ago (I am comfortably into my 60s), some audio guru gave me a tip for using a brush to clean a record on a turntable, as you have done here. Don't turn on the turntable and engage the motor when using the brush. Spin the platter by hand in the same direction that it normally rotates, use the brush on the record, at right angles to the grooves (as you do) running it out toward the outer rim, then gently up and off the surface, and then slow down the table again by hand to stop it (well, I admit I am sometimes lazy on that last step and leave it spinning). Then start the motor and play the record normally. The reason for this is that the brush creates much more resistance on the record than the cartridge (for which the turntable is designed). If you use the brush with the motor engaged, you place undue wear on various parts -- whatever is involved -- bearings, maybe a clutch or a belt, etc. Best wishes. -Fred
This is a great channel that I’ve only recently found. I’m quickly getting the impression that you’re as much a fan of music (if not more) than you are of Hi-Fi, and that’s so refreshing. I’ve listened to what appears to be great sound advice (pun intended) regarding equipment at both the low and medium end of the cost spectrum , not reaching the stratospheric six figure component costs, that outline the fact that you can have a foot tappingly great day with your set up, even if it didn’t cost the price of a family saloon. Happy days
What, no $8000 cleaning solution?
It’s nice to see that I’m not the only one that cleans its records before playing them. My wife considers it being part of a paranoid system of living. But my wife doesn’t play vinyl records
I like that you have plants in your place. The rubber plant in the background is very nice.
I ordered just now one of the Ikea lamps. I went for one the same but with a weighted base so that I can position it for best effect. I sometimes work on watches which is another interest and the lamp will be very useful. Thanks for showing it John.
Never thought to use a dedicated light... great idea! Keep up the good work, nice to see some character in these reviews/videos
Ha ha! ...and the $12 Ikea lamp finishes off the room lol!! I love those little lamps. Got 5 of them in my music room too lol.
I prefer to drag the brush towards the center of the LP before lifting off the surface. Dust won’t drop from the brush to the surface using this method. Keep up the good work. 👍
Ah .. the Vinyl ritual .. love it .. love it .. love it.
I love staring at the black screen and pulsing white 'T' as Tidal loads up ;)
Hi, i'm into buying a rega Planar 2, with which ampli and speaker do you recommend it? THX
I was waiting for this video. Thank you
John are you happy with the Rega p2 or are you upgrading at some point?
I always played records in the dark...no light near the turntable...if the light shines on the surface of the record you want to cry because of the dust! Better use a knosti cleanmachine!
Is that your main TT that you listen to all of your vinyl on? If so I have a question for you...
I have a Project rpm Genie 1.3 with Ortofon OMB 30 - Marantz pm5004 - Q Acoustics 1030i Floor standers all bought 2nd hand. what would you upgrade first? I feel it's lacking bass and erm full soundingness if there is such a word. I also have added a yamaha subwoofer but that has coloured the sound terribly but does make it better in respect of fuller sound and more bass.
Your experience would be more than welcome thank you in advance.. p.s. I also have a Marantz cd5005..
My other TT rigs are listed in this video's about box. And if it were me, I'd upgrade the cartridge on your TT first. Talk to your Pro-Ject dealer about possibilities.
John Darko Thank you I will.
John Darko I’d like to see those. I can’t see them in the info box. Are they on the website?

Nice video, thanks, luv your work. Coincidentally got the same lamp for my Planar 1 :)
Minimise brushing. Get an RCM (cleans and removes static). Static free vinyl attracts far less dust.
I have an RCM.
Is there any way I can give more than one thumbs up?
and a nice Red,
Enjoy the music! Seems like a mantra!🤣
You actually work for Ikea, don't you? BE HONEST :p
But seriously, I'm glad you're not one of those audiophiles who thinks everything has to be an expensive name brand.
soulshinobi hahahaha funny ikea man
don't do this though with a rare or expensive record, the light can damage the paper label over time
Dry brushes are minimally effective. Look into a GrooveWasher. I use a GrooveWasher even after cleaning on the VPI 16.5 .
I've a Pro-Ject wet machine for deeper cleans...but it's not part of my playback ritual.
Joseph Grado said don't clean your records!!!
Where is your washing Machine????? 😯😯😯😉
Video coming next! ;)
John Darko, you still need a wet brush once the vinyl is on the table. I have seen electron microscope photos from long ago. I know of that which I speak:-)
Wait a second, didn’t you make a video about how Vinyl sucks and you just like the covers etc ?
I did.
You need to wash your records... and perhaps invest in a cartridge that’ll do the level of speakers you use some justice...
And you need to listen more carefully to the video where I mention the THREE turntable rigs that I use...and read the video description box that details 'em. And yeah, I wash my records with a Pro-Ject RCM.
John Darko yes I saw that video. The thing is this isbthe video where you explain your record playing process and well I see a record with a ton of dust over it and that’s why I mention the washing thing. Also you don’t mention anything about cleaning the stylus which is also very important. If you now the stuff and are making a video about it then inform it all!! Haha. Your videos are all actually quite good so no distispect.
I clean the stylus and I wash my records.
You don't smell the vinyl before playing. UNSUBSCRIBE.
