- Not all ambitions are created equal. Typically, the more ambitious they are to achieve, the more sacrifices one needs to make to achieve them. How far are you willing to go to pursue your ambitions? What will you sacrifice? Jeff Joslin has a very ambitious goal. In this talk, Jeff shares his story and the hard lessons he has learned along the way. Jeff “The Inferno” Joslin is a martial artist in the truest sense of the term. Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, he grew up in a family of martial artists. Starting his training at five years of age, he won over 200 first place finishes in multiple styles of martial arts during a competitive career that spanned more than two decades. As a professional MMA fighter Jeff endured a long, challenging road to reach the pinnacle of the sport, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He now runs a highly successful martial arts school in Hamilton. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Years ago you taught a 9 year old girl that I worked with. She had a learning disability but she wanted to learn karate. I just remember thinking what an amazing teacher you were and how great you were with her. While watching this I realized that it was at about the same time that you were going through some of the hardest times of your life. I remember how proud she was when she was tested for the first stripe on her belt. Just know that, even when you were struggling, you made a difference in a little girl's life. Unfortunately, she could not continue with karate, and we have lost touch, but I know she will carry those times with her forever. Thank you.
Mr. Joslin is the true champion both in the ring and outside the ring. I truly admire him.

When I first started doing BJJ competing in "Joselins" was THE tournament. I won the over 30 no gi one year and it is STILL the highlight of my BJJ career. Thank you for the amazing memory and sharing your journey. You are truly a legend, and your name to me is synonymous with Canadian Martial Arts.
One thing I remember from your classes was how much you gave to every individual. It really felt like you were giving your all with us at all times. Great Ted Talk, Thanks Jeff.
I had Jeff as a striking coach years ago and he is gifted at teaching those who are fortunate to join Joslin's MMA, great guy. Very attentive at teaching and he knows how to communicate with anyone from beginner novice to advanced fighter.
Jeff, that was an amazing talk! At the end of your talk and you mentioned the concussion, then the drinking. I was similar (I'm not sure if I ever talked to you about it when we briefly talked many times in the past). I tore my ACL, MCL, and Meniscus playing in a training camp in the NBA D-League. Instead of alcohol I chose food and gained 130 pounds. I am now in the faze of burning off those 130 (30 gone so far). I am happy to see a fellow Hamiltonian getting to talk on TEDx CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I love you my friend. Thank you. I have been making music for over 16 years. I got so good at it and tunnel visioned in as you mentioned. Sometimes my aspirations were the things stopping me from being loved the way I needed it. One day I suffered a head injury that wiped out my ability to memorize new information. I had to relearn how to think and operate my mind from such a forget filled place. I just had 2 children a daughter and a son. They make me hold myself accountable for many things now. I love you Jeff. Thank you for sharing that. The moment you had that breakdown from explaining the Tim Hortons drive. I can imagine the one on concession when you mentioned it and that moment was so real I could feel your pain re-experienced again. That thing we created our identity out of came to a stop and forced us to look at other channels of our lives. To bring balance to the rest.

used to go to this guys MMA classes, literally a legend I swear to god.
I knew Jeff quite well during these years, so I had a front row seat to some of his experiences. Many years have gone by since those days, but I will always remember him as one of the finest individuals I have ever met. I could write a chapter to validate the reasons why people who trained with Jeff hold him in such high regard. He was wise beyond his years and his work ethic was remarkable. He was kind and in tune with each students skill level and needs. Once pleasantries ended and the training session began, he had the ability, if he chose to, to break your soul in one 5 minute roll. I'd anticipate someone may be thinking that I'm embellishing, I'm not. However Jeff Joslin was not interested in breaking your soul, he was interested in cultivating his students to be better versions of themselves than they were before they stepped into his dojo for the first time. Mission accomplished. Lots of people love the Joslins because they have given so much to the community.

Regarding the kosceck fight Jeff had a deep triangle choke locked up and the round ended saving kos from tapping- Jeff would have won that fight if there was 30 more seconds left in that round! Jeff is an incredibly talented fighter and instructor.

yes, most people don't remember that about that fight, they just remember Jeff lost. The UFC judging at that time was very one-sided in favor of the take down, even if not much was done after the take down. I felt if that was under the old UFC rules, Jeff would have finished JK with that triangle.
Same when Mark " the Machine" Hominick fought Jose Aldo in Toronto, that fight ended with Mark on top, I believe in full mount, and Jose seemingly gased out. Hominick took a beating and lost by points, but a real fight or old UFC rules, the guy who toughs it out and ends up on top would win.
