An under-rated gem. Good speed throughout the course, wicked laterals, and a surprising amount of airtime. A bit bumpy, but a good wooden coaster should rattle you around a bit.

I am deathly terrified of roller coasters. I've never done an actual roller coaster and about 2 or 3 days ago I went to Six Flags Great America and did Viper. I was absolutely terrified and practically lost my stomach on the ride since I was expecting much smaller drops but I had so much fun on it. First ever actual roller coaster I ever did. I'm pretty sure I got over my fear of roller coasters on it, but I was still too scared to go on Batman or Viper again because I knew what I had coming. I wish I did it again. Such a great ride.

I love the short stall this ride has on the top of the hill, makes it much more memorable.

My favorite airtime hill is the last one where you get some insane ejecter and you feel like you're gonna hit the timber above. This is one insane ride and if you haven't riden before you should definitely try to.
oh yeah, i rode this in the 90's as a kid like age 10 or something. I was small so I lifted out of my seat at this places, I remember screaming for my life. I was not happy.
I always thought of this ride as the Big Dipper because I feel like the Little Dipper is just a smaller version of this

being front seat on the viper is my favorite thing to do at six flags great america, it feels like i’m free and i can just zone out, and i feel like i’m flying in the wild west! it may be rickety but i love going on this ride with my dad, 100% recommend
I remember going on this ride with my best friend and as we started to go up my best friend was like "do I regret my life, yes" "Do I regret spending money to get here, yes" I will never forget that moment 🤣😂
last year I rode this for the first time,with my,cousin and going up that hill the start I realized I had made the wrong choice because I cannot,handle roller coasters.😂

It's one of the bumpiest rides there, but it gives you so much airtime you barely care, even though Goliath is larger, the restraints on viper give you a good mix of ejector and floater airtime.
Favorite wooden coaster that’s not an rmc I haven’t ridden many tho I’ve only ridden 49 coasters but American eagle is way ruffer at least this season cause it’s running blue train red trains way better on red side it has really good air time and is halfway smooth
"Restraints"??? It's a lap bar! Depending on how loose they are with it, you can fly clear out of your seat! It's awesome!

@@richardwright1195 And that's why it was taken down and replaced with Superman: Ultimate Flight. It developed a fracture in the track and they had to keep watch on it. As fun as it was for breaking records in many categories, I would say the exchange was MUCH better. S:UF is MUCH smoother, even if it requires even MORE technical maintenance.

Seriously wicked Wood coaster. This thing is wicked fast and literally makes you feel like your gonna fly right off the tracks, it's that wild train out of control feeling very few modern coasters have. Even the Eagle is a pussycat compared to this mini beast. Been a favorite since the ride first opened back in the mid 80's.
rode this coaster 5 times today, 3 times another time. best wooden coaster by far love it.

Not really. Airtime filled. The double-down aftee the banked turn offers EXTREME airtime.
I always let my lapbar be particularly loose on Viper, preferably back row, and i find it fun to flail seemingly out of control at every turn and airtime hill. Especially the double down^ lol. If this is bumpy to you then well... im sorry i guess
A bit bumpy on the banked turns, but overall a great ride.
If you think this is bump, you should ride Bandit at movie world, it has the same layout as this but flipped the other way, it literally beats you up and takes your lunch money

It's not a steel coaster, if you want it to be super smooth, then cross the path and go ride Raging Bull

I'm going on this on Thursday I've never been on this and I'm quite nervous to ride this
I love how smooth it is for a 90's woodie it gave decent airtime too and you never have to wait in line for it
I loved this coaster so much that I went on it 3 times in one day. I was afraid of it at first because of the raging bull trauma my boyfriend put me through but it immediately became my favorite roller coaster. I can’t wait to go back so I can ride it more. The first drop is perfect. It messes with your stomach, but in the best way possible. This ride is underrated for sure.
Lol my mom went on raging bull with my older sister and my mom said she was so glad she hugged me and my dad before she went on it because she said she felt like she was gonna die
Rode this 10 years when I was a teenager. Most of my coasters have been on the East Coast. I still remember this. One of my favorite wooden coasters. My friend and I kept riding it over and over at night.
I rode on this at night and it was the best ride I've ever had.

This and Raging Bull make Southwest Territory the best part of the park. I still wish they would have used that water park land for more coasters. Six Flags could have competed with Cedar point in Coaster count.
Totally Agree and get rid of picnic Grove no company uses it anymore.
That double down though...easily the best part of the ride especially if you are in the back row.

When I was little I was scared of drops because they "tickled my stomach" as I used to say, in an unpleasant way. I think it started when I was 2 or 3 and take on one of those boat splash drops. I had no idea what was going on and I never wanted to feel that way again. It gave me nightmares about being strapped to the top of a train in which I couldn't breathe. For years I refused to go on rides with big drops. Finally I wound up on a roller coaster I was terrified, and it didn't tickle my stomach at all. In fact, it was blissful. I had been so full of dread going on that my relief gave it an extra amount of enjoyable thrill. I then conquered all the rides at 6 Flags, and never got the stomach tingling feeling from any of them, or if I did, I knew how to control it and it wasn't at all like when I was little and caught off guard. All in all my terror of them made them more wonderful once I did ride them.
I went as a 10 year old with my bestie, and the only thing that bothers me with rollercoasters are the flippy floppy thing ur stomach does when u drop
Riding this was kinda good but something that scared me the most was my 8 year old sister sliding up and sliding down from her seat.When you are near the entrance of the Viper there’s a wooden stick indicating how tall you need to be to ride and my sister passed to the green part but when we sat in the seats and clicked the seatbelt we couldn’t adjust it further so my sis wouldn’t fly out,the handle was about 1 1/2 inches from her belly I tried to lower it down more but it wouldn’t budge.When the assistants came to check everyone they only pulled the seatbelt one time and went to check the other guests.I motioned them to check us again but they didn’t,immediately the ride started and so when we started going up the supposed hill and then went down I had to tightly hold my sister because she screamed out of intense fear,I panicked a lot because I saw my sister sliding up and down from her seat and from the seatbelt as well as the handle,the workers there seriously need to change the stick that determines how tall you need to be to ride the attraction,I was terrified,thank god that she didn’t fly out,when we exited the ride and the park me and my family saw another family with the mom crying and the mom was talking to two cops about how her child almost died riding the Viper,the point of this is please don’t let kids under the age of 10 ride this roller coaster.Thanks for reading this have a nice day/afternoon/night.
I have been to great America many times and I go on all the big roller coasters but this is still one of my favorites
Tip for the viper (for those who are not the best with roller coasters): the right side (close to the entrance) is smoother than the left, and the middle is the best area to sit as it is balanced and the smoothest seat.

Omg yes that's how I felt when I was on it and I was in the front and tbh I didn't know till we were gonna drop cause I'm that slow 😂 but literally I thought I was gonna fly out and I was holding on tight the whole time 😂😂 it felt like I was on it for an hour
Way better pacing and air time than the original Cyclone. One of the more underrated wooden costers
Viper was my 1st roller coaster ever...... made me love it forever
I remember riding this as a small kid back in the 90's I think? It was my first roller coaster and a bad choice for a short kid. The buckles don't hold you down completely because they're not over your shoulders, they're just on your lap, so when I was small I would lift out of my seat and feel like I was going to fly out of the coaster every time I went over a bump.
I was terrified of coasters after that, which sucks because I didn't know almost all coasters are different from the Viper in modern days, so I didn't go on a coaster again for like another 10 years, lol. This was the exact one at Six Flags Great America too.
By far the most intense at the park. I have ridden all of the coasters at the park many many times and this is still my favorite.
Amazing ride it's based of the cyclone model but with slight difference also was designed by Six Flags personally one of the best rides there just underrated.

It's also the same as the Georgia Cyclone. I recognized that it repeated the same pattern.

I am a roller coaster fanatic! But I about crapped my pants on this ride. We rode front seat. First drop I had no problem with. But those sharp turns....I thought the thing was going to fly right off the track. I never screamed so hard in my life
I always ride it in the backmost seats. You get more air that way. I LOVE this coaster for those little speedy hills. So much fun.

When I was 14 back in 1997, my sister, mum and myself travelled from England to Chicago for my Aunts wedding. My Aunt and Uncle took us to Great America and this was my first ever rollercoaster. Will never forget the fear I had. 😂
I love this ride with all my heart. The first coaster I ever went on was American eagle and It was so rough, I thought I wasn't going to enjoy roller coasters. Right afterwards I rode viper and all those feelings were erased lol
This gives me Georgia cyclone flashbacks. I’ll make sure to ride this someday to enjoy the Georgia cyclone feeling.

I made the mistake if going on this roller coaster for the first ever roller coaster I have Been on. It was freaking terrifying! But it's amazing too. Especially the low G hills

Really, I rode this lottery like 40 times in a row all day without getting off until the park closed and I was so weak and out of energy and hungry because I didn’t eat anything at all that entire day, I was starving and I felt like I was going to pass out

Before winter I rode the Viper backwards it was so fun I live one minute away from this six flags literatlly I can walk there and I hear them say all clear lol

Jose Martinez Yes American Eagle is really bumpy, I was onboard that roller coaster when I was at Six Flags Great America last month and it was so bumpy as hell.
This is my favorite ride in the park. The airtime is amazing.
I really cannot. Handle. *Bumpy coasters*. My head hurt the whole time and after, which made the experience completely unenjoyable. I used to be scared of big drops and loops, but now my concern is bumpy wooden coasters. I'm not going on this again, unless they make it smoother. I would probably enjoy this if it was steel, or as smooth as the Goliath
i got on this a few nights ago & i can confirm it’s absolutely terrifying lmao i instantly regret my decision soon as it started.
That was like my brother he was so excited to go on it (we did it backwards on the anniversary though) and as soon as it was done he asked my dad who he sat with if the ride was over. My dad said yes and then my brother started crying. Felt so bad for him as he was only like 8 or 9 ish at the time
Ah yes this was my first coaster because my friend bagged me to go on it and I was dying.
A few weeks ago I was there, I was gonna go on it but I saw how bumpy it was and I was just like NOPE NOT HAPPENING. I kinda regret it cuz it seems really fun on the POV
I rode this and stayed on like 70 times because no one was in line, they finaly closed so I left, that last turn needs to be banked more

When I first rode this in the Summer of 1995 (the season it opened), I had just got back from visiting my mother and sister in NYC... While out there, I had rode the CI Cyclone once again for old times sake... The layout is slightly different, but as far as overall feel went, I really couldn't tell the difference between the two!
That's because Viper is a mirrored version of CI's Cyclone.
The videos do this ride dirty, it looks like it’s 15 feet tall at the drop when in reality it is 8 times taller, this ride is the better wooden coaster there, sorry dipper, sorry eagle
the only thing I didn't like was that the seats were too small and cramped for me. but im also 6'3 235lbs so that sadly has an effect

This used to be one of my favorite rides as Great America. And while I still enjoy it and it does give some pretty solid air time, it has gotten really rough over the last few years. Definitely could use a retrack.
What we really need is American Eagle to Duel again lol.
@@bonnie2253 the structure is too unstable to be able to duel. That's why a lot of times only one side is open. Eagle needs a lot of work done on it. More than likely it'll either get RMC'd or torn down

As someone whose home park is where the original Cyclone is located… The airtime on this one looks legit. I also like that added double-down after the second turnaround. But y'all probably don't have rolling sofas for trains 😛

Actually Six Flags Great America already has a roller coaster from Rocky Mountain Construction which is Goliath. So they don't need to convert viper into a RMC Hybrid.

I got the best ride out of any rides I’ve gotten on any coaster on it yesterday it was running insane it didn’t slow down at the top of the lift hill and I was in the back row so I flew over the lift hill if they always made the lift hill like that it would be one of the best coasters in the world it’s my third favorite at the park under Goliath and maxx force raging bull does not deserve that spot it hasn’t ran good at all this season and even when it does it’s not to good I’m so glad this is my home park tho one of the best drops of ever experienced u guys will think I’m insane but it ran so fast yesterday

What are the restraints on this ride, there is a sign half way up the lift (0:37) saying to remain seat, violators will be ejected from the park.

When I first got on the roller coaster, it was so shaky but when I on the second time I was with my friend and I think we were in the front seat and we had hands up the whole time. It was cool. My mom is getting season passes next year for the whole parkand waterpark
