  • Hello all and welcome back! Today's video is the Hocking Valley number 3 steam-powered excursion train on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway in Nelsonville Ohio.
The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is a shortline that runs through the Hocking Valley in Ohio, around 15 miles in length. Excursion trains run on this line frequently, but they are almost always pulled by diesels. Today is special though, because 0-6-0 Number 3 got to pull the train, sporting the whistle from Grand Trunk Western 4070. We chased two runs on this day from Nelsonville to east of Logan.
Halfway through the first run the crew found some maintenance to be done and took number 3 back to the shop, and as a result GP10 number 701 rescued the train, but props to the shop workers for fixing up number 3 in time for the second run!
Enjoy the video, and don't forget to like and Sub!

Just to clarify, we did not have a wheel bearing problem! (Would have made it a lot more challenging to get back to the shops if we did!) After the Run-by Frank, the Shop Foreman and I discussed some preventive maintenance that needed to be done on the crosshead slide brass, just to make sure It wouldn't become an issue later on that run or the remainder of the weekend. We had a replacement milled, drilled, and installed in about an hour and a half.

Thanks for the info. I was told by some other railfans that a wheel bearing had snapped. They were all like, "Number 3's done for the day" so I got worried, but of course it wasn't as bad as they'd made it out to be.

Oh man, this one hurts. I was so excited to go with you. I’m sorry it didn’t work out. I’ll have to make a trip out there. Great footage. That whistle was awesome! That’s not her normal whistle! Loved the video.

Try to look the other way while passing the back yards along the route.

GTW 4070: I’ll be back, and when I get my whistle back, I’ll be back riding out on the mainline rails again!
