  • Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel.
In this video I will be travelling on-board the ÖBB Nightjet, this time to try out the newly refurbished Comfort-Couchette (Comfort-Liegewagen) on an overnight journey through Austria from Wien Hbf (Vienna) to Bregenz.
These carriages were formed from redundant seating carriages, and now are the first vehicles to feature Nightjet's new interior style, ahead of the brand-new carriages entering service on their routes soon.
It was a very different experience to the usual Nightjet Couchette, and definitely well worth a look.
    Enjoy the video. :)

I am really happy that ÖBB went against the trend a few years ago and continued to offer night trains, even bought Deutsche Bahn's old stock of sleeper trains. Otherwise no European train manager would have notice the uptick in demand. Travelling at night in a modern sleeper compartment makes train journeys of 8 hours and more pleasant and it's a real alternative to taking a plane. There are new European night services in the works and I hope we will eventually have a network of night trains that covers the entirety of Europe.

True that and I really hope that this trend will change again towards better quality and quantity of sleeping trains because choosing between a ultra long bus haul in uncomfortable european busses or airplanes there's no real solution for it.

Yes, I too read that the Deutsche Bahn sold their nightcompartments to Austria. As I travelled once from Berlin to Basel in a night compartment , I am still looking to where they sold it to? It was single bed and bathroom inside. This journey was breathtaking and luxurious. Does anyone know where these compartments were sold to?

Thanks for the nice feature. Only issue I have with ÖBB in the context of the new nightjets is that while they ADVERTISE all services with images of the new couchettes, you don't get to experience the new service level at some of the routes considered "lower priority" by ÖBB. E.g.: I recently took the Vienna-Berlin service, booking into a 4 bed couchette, which was advertised with the "new" interior. However, what I got was an old 6-bed couchette, into which only 4 passengers had been booked. At least servicing of the toilets has improved over the past years. Also: While I do use the night-train every now and then for private journeys, where my appearance upon arrival in the morning does not matter, it is not really possible to use this if you have to attend a business meeting, where you are expected to be showered, shaved and at least wearing a suit (tie is nowadays becoming increasingly optional) at the other end.

The problem of the main station is that they built it too small with only 10 platforms. Original plans included a separate commuter station underground. This is especially problematic for night trains as they usually arrive during morning peak hours and need longer stopping times, so they need to be slotted in between the daily commuter and domestic trains. If overnight train travel continues to rise they might need to run some trains out of (or probably into, as evening departure times are less crowded) the old Westbahnhof again.

I don't know many locals who like Hauptbahnhof. Most commuters and regular travellers I know prefer Meidling, which is of course not build for that sort of traffic load. There's no point in living in a city with outstanding public transport that takes you to most places in less than thirty minutes if you then need more than ten minutes to get from the underground station to your train. Hauptbahnhof is badly planned, chaotic, and even the usually excellent Viennese signage system can't fully compensate its mess.

    • @astra1360
      @astra1360 Рік тому +3

@@frauleinbird Being from Vienna myself, I completely disagree. The walk from the underground to the platform is similar to what you would expect from any major station (its not much longer than on the decidedly smaller Westbahnhof and even better than on Zürich or Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof for example). The older Südbahnhof that was there before it was a complete disgrace and the new Hauptbahnhof as well as its facilities and location are absolutely superb in my opinion. Although I live closer to Meidling than to Hauptbahnhof, I absolutely hate it there and from the city center itself, Hauptbahnhof is also much more reachable. I think Meidling should be rebuilt though to offer similar comfort.

@@dahauns That's because they purposely reconstructed the passage to route you through the shopping center.
There used to be a direct escalator to the main platforms form the U3. Now there are only 2 (or 3?) elevators in a corner that bring you directly to the upper level where the trains are.
I didn't like the Hauptbahnhof (main station - it's not a central station ;->) at first, because I missed the trains being made available half an hour or even an hour before it left. But now we have more trains that pass through (eg Budapest - Zürich), so that's less an of an option anyway.
The one thing it's missing is a good waiting area. People are using the food tables to wait for trains and it's often quite hard to find one to eat in the evenings because people sit there until their train is available, even if they don't eat. (Or I suspect some also just go there to use the free Wifi.)

The best bit of scenery I think is when the train makes a big S swoop on the track east of Bludenz as you're entering the Klostertal (east bound). If you time it just right you can get a great shot of your own train and engine with the mountains in the background (provided you're sitting in a rear carriage).

I paused and thought about the cost for a while, and it's a bit expensive for a single traveler but it's not hard to justify the cost. What's the alternative? Spend half a day driving (which also isn't free) and then stay in a hotel overnight? So let's say that would cost about $200. While you're driving you're not working, or relaxing, or admiring the fantastic scenery, so there's also some value in being able to do those things instead of driving a car.
A coach seat on the express train might be a bit more practical, but for a nominal extra cost this train seems much more relaxing and fun.

Thank you. Nice overview, so far I have only seen photos/video of the stationary carriage, not in motion.
The design is now with 4 fixed berths to save the staff the work of rebuilding the compartment. Technically everything should be working fine, considering they have just come out of rebuilding.
Are there just the two toilets or also any washrooms? Other couchette cars have washrooms in addition (just a small room with a faucet) so you can brush your teeth even when the toilet is occupied. Sleeping cars don't need this, having a tiny little sink in each compartment.
The newly built trains (to go into service next year) should have 4-berth compartments of the same design, plus mini-cabins, regular and deluxe 2-bed sleepers and some seating.

The picture you show from Götzis, shows platform 2 and 3, the actual building that belongs to the railway station is located on the other side of the train (platform 1)
But you made a nice and informative video! I like your content!
In Dornbirn you actually caught the weird CityShuttle, that exists because the ordered Talent3 fleet from Bombardier didn’t get delivered and the ÖBB tries to assure that they still provide the service of available trains according to the turntable… (so these old carriages are kept operating until the new/longer version of the CityJet (Siemens Desiro) will get delivered…
The new/longer version of the CityJet should start operating in Vorarlberg in December 2022 (shorter versions of that train are already operating in other parts of Austria)

I don't know if that's specifically Austrian, but it becomes especially apparent when using lesser-frequented, slower routes. My grandma has a railway line basically framing one end of her garden. They started to sell plots in this part of the village in the 50s and whoever moved there would quickly set up hedges to ward off the noise of the semi-hourly trains passing by. No other noise-prevention has ever been taken. In fact, the streets there didn't even have crossing gates until about ten years ago. Up to then, trains would whistle three times before passing a road.
Interestingly, you just get used to it. After a few days you don't even notice the trains passing by anymore.
In fact, there weren't even many accidents until tourism started to pick up in the region. Locals would just know when and when not to cross (or even walk on) the rails.

actually, the hauptbahnhof replaced the südbahnhof and the ostbahnhof (south and east station). west was never replaced, it is still standing, but with the opening of the lainzer tunnel from meidling to the west, trains from western austria are either terminating at hauptbahnhof or even passing through (since only westbahnhof is a head-railwaystation, süd and east were head stations too).
oh, and north? it's now called praterstern.

What a huge improvement, wow! Really impressed by this design. Sadly it'll not be for me, motion sickness is probably still an issue as the beds are still oriented the same relative to direction of travel. But this will be a game changer for nightjet and its brand. Now to change those 80s compartment seating carriages to modern open saloon reclining seats carriages and you really have a full train that'll feel premium and classy.

I think most travellers will find the mattress uncomfortable. Too firm and too thin. The power and usb sockets kept cutting out so come the morning, our phones and computers had barely been recharged. The reading lights for the top bunks are mounted in the ceiling and are non-adjustable. They're bright and point directly at the occupants in the bottom bunks.
On the plus side, our trains ran on time, the tasty hot and cold snacks were surprisingly affordable and the attendents ranged from good to fantastic.
Overall, I'd still recommend Nightjet. Next time I'll either pack a roll-up foam mattress or go for the full sleeper option.
