    Absolutely top tier work by this channel. To have access to this kind of story telling free of charge is just mind boggling. I truly hope Clenched Teeth goes on to big time success. It's certainly deserved!
    I'm not a Chael fan. I certainly respect so much of what he did in the UFC, and of course you have to respect anyone who works so hard for something so incredibly difficult. However, there is more in Chael's past that makes me question who he really is as a human being. HOWEVER, it's all pretty much washed away when I hear him talk about his father. While not on nearly the same scale, I, too, made promises to my dad about achieving things in my athletic career. And I, too, fell short. He passed away two years ago this December, and while I've tried to make peace with everything, there's still a gnawing regret I can't seem to get rid of. I hope Chael can find peace. He has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of in that regard. He gave it his all. Had he not fallen into that triangle in the last round of his first fight with Silva...wow...who knows?

      As a father of a competitive athlete. Dad's hear those promises and we are proud. It doesn't matter if our sons achieve it. What matters is they love and respect us so much they want make us happy and promise us the world. Becuse we know when our baby was little we made them crazy promises as well... most we never acheived.... but we were young and wet behind the ears and wanted to make them proud of us as well.... and that's what love between a father and son is.

      Agree with Jake. I usually scroll through mini-docs like this and watch a few 1 minute snippets. The quality of this had me interested from beginning to end. Nothing was too wordy, it was filled with relevant backstory clips, it was factual, and your product backed up the title (which is sadly rare). Really really good. Subscribing now.

    He made a career out of talking his way into big fights, yet the most powerful line he ever spoke was on the day he retired from the sport. "I'd just tell him I tried" makes me tear up every time.

    • @donavonhoward114
      @donavonhoward114 8 місяців тому +65

      That's not really true. Yes, he did talk really well, and cut great promos, but Chael proved many times that he belonged at the top, or near the top of the rankings. He earned his record, and proved he belonged. He was in the top 10 or the top 15 at Middleweight for a pretty good stretch of time, and he got multiple shots at the title because he earned those shots, and he was easily one of the top wrestlers in the sport despite his submission losses. He beat a lot of really good fighters, but he ended up on the bad end against some great fighters despite dominating in some of those fights. Of course, there were also some fights where he got manhandled, but that happens to almost all fighters at some point with few exceptions. The guy could have easily been a champion, and probably should have been if a few situations went slightly different.

    When Chael was asked about his promise to his deceased father, to whom he had swore he would win a world championship, his response was so devastating: "I'd just tell him I tried." That shit breaks my heart, every time. I have no doubt that Chael's dad was incredibly proud of his accomplishments as a fighter, and as a man in general. Sadly, Chael would have kept his promise YEARS before that interview, if only Paulo Filho had made weight for his final fight in the WEC. Because Filho missed weight, the bout was changed to a non-title fight, which Sonnen won, handily. Regardless, Chael is one of the most famous and revered figures in MMA history, so he has accomplished more than many champions have, especially in terms of popularizing the sport.

      I just want to add, “and I’m sure you already know this” He DID win a world championship. In the WEC he went up against Paulo Filho for the middleweight championship. In the first fight, the ref made a bad stoppage, so they had a rematch for the belt again. Paulo Filho showed up overweight, so the belt wasn’t on the line.
      Chael absolutely obliterated him. Destroyed him with a fairly large disadvantage.
      It may not have been considered a title fight on paper, but let’s be real, he beat the champ. That made him the real linear champ when they merged with the UFC. I don’t care what anyone says. He fulfilled his promise.

  • @donavonhoward114
    @donavonhoward114 8 місяців тому +27

    All Sonnen had to do in that first fight against Silva during the 5th round was stand up, keep his hands high, watch for head kicks, and not follow Silva to the ground after knocking him down. He should have played it safe, but Sonnen had a lot of heart, and he wanted to make a statement despite already proving he was the better fighter in that fight that night. He would have been a UFC champion, and people wouldn't be discrediting his career. The way some people treat Sonnen is kind of like how idiots treat Bisping despite Bisping being a former champion, and a great fighter. They discredit their accomplishments, and underrate their talents, skills, and ability because they either don't like them, or they lost a few big fights. Still, there are many fans that understand the harsh reality of mma. Anything can happen against any opponent, especially in the UFC. Sonnen is a HOF worthy fighter regardless of what his critics believe about his career, and never winning a title.

      I'm not sure what happened in his training, he was a great wrestler and very good striker but his jiu jitsu skills were not quite where they needed to be. He'd be winning fights then lose to a submission that any decent jiu jitsu guy would have seen coming. I remember after those losses thinking he needed to focus his training on submission awareness and defense but he never seemed to get that skillset up to snuff. If not for that weakness, I have no doubt he would have won a belt.

    The thing about Chael was, I always thought he misjudged his "badboy" image. I know he could run his mouth, I know he could upset people and that was part of his game but the guy was just to dang funny to be a villian or a gangster. I never thought he was the guy to hate. I loved it then, I love it now. I hope one day he comes out with a walker, still running that mouth. UFC needed Chael as much as Chael needed the UFC. Gangster, no. Genius.... Oh yes!

    I watched that interview live when he was asked about his dad and had honestly forgot until I just watched this. A lot of people say they want to be a champ but never really put in the work. I think Chael truly left nothing on the table and was heartbroken over it. I’m sure he’s gotten over things now but you can see in that statement he really did dedicate his career to getting that belt just once.

    Chael is my personal favorite fighter that never got the belt. Even though he should have had it in strikeforce but the champ didnt make weight so they cancelled the title challenge. I think they changed that rule at some point because of this.

    • @hahajones
      @hahajones 8 місяців тому +5

      That was the WEC, not Strikeforce, and was against middleweight champion, Paulo Filho, who missed weight therefore negating his title defense. Sonnen beat Filho handedly, who then actually gave Chael the physical title as a showing of gentlemanly sportsmanship.
      The rule was not changed because of that event, but was eventually altered so that only the participant who made weight was eligible to win the title, as shown most recently when Charles Olivera was stripped of the championship before defeating Justin Gaethje, leaving the title vacant for a time.
