@@Demonfridge1 Imo the marshmallows make this wayyy to crazy sweet, I'd rather have the equivalent of just mashed sweet potatoes and even that is a little sweet for me
@@Demonfridge1 it's just a traditional holiday dish. We also typically only eat whole roast turkeys a couple times a year. I'm pretty neutral on the dish. When you have a table full of intensely salty/savory food it can be a nice contrast, but it's possible to make them too sweet. Think of it like eating apples and pork together or putting raisins in a braise.
My mom has always made it with the Pecan streusel on top, and without marshmallows. I can't have it any other way! It's a strong contender for my favorite food
My mom always roasts the sweet potatoes in the oven whole releasing their syrup that's super sweet. Then she chops them into rougher pieces and combined either butter and brown sugar. Never had the mashed variety.

It's basically dessert eaten as a side with the savory main course, before actual dessert. I don't get it either but it's delicious and socially acceptable so I'm not gonna complain. (Even though I prefer it with no marshmallows)
The reason is because the proper way to eat Thanksgiving dinner according to me is to mix everything up on your plate and get a bit of everything in one bite, sweet, savory, salty, sour. That's what I do, I take a bit of the turkey, mix it with the dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, etc. Some people say you're supposed to eat everything separately, but they're wrong.

Oh boy, here come the America-bashers, rushing in to criticize this dish without the context of knowing that we literally only eat this once, maybe twice per year, and also pretending not to understand that sweet, salty, and savory flavors can be complementary and that homogeneity in flavor profiles is BORING.

Do you think you can make all of Porky's Buttered Dishes that were seen/mentioned in The Looney Tunes Show episode, "Bobcats on Three" before Thanksgiving?
A really fun (and easy) spin on the casserole is taking cooked sweet potatoes (either from fresh or canned) and beat it in a mixer with softened butter, salt, lemon/orange juice, and spices then transfer it to the stove top. Keep it on low to medium heat and fold in marshmallows until dissolved in the mash. Can even fold in crushed pineapple, brown sugar, or maple syrup while still over heat. Top with toasted nuts and flakey salt. If it's not sweet enough for you add more brown sugar and broil. No eggs and potentially no bake :)
This is the first time I've ever seen a "sweet" sweet potato dish, it's always severed savory in my country. So strange to see it treated as a candy or something
As an american this food is weird to me. Mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallow on top? Yuck. The only 3 things marshmallow goes on are rice crispy treats, smores, and fluffernutter sandwiches.
My fave add-ins for sweet potato casserole: cinnamon, crushed pineapple, and chopped walnuts. Marshmallows (toasted to crusty brown perfection) on top of course. Sweet potatoes just mashed. I swear, I could (and have!) eat this for breakfast. XD
As an American, I have never, and probably will never have this....lol. I never understood it being served as part of a Thanksgiving dinner. Its more of a dessert than anything, but idk. It seems popular amongst my friends, I've just never been interested. 🤷🏻♀

You should do Grandma’s thanksgiving dinner from Garfields thanksgiving.
my mom always makes this on thanksgiving and christmas. best thing ive ever eaten
No don't mash them. 😱😱😱 I personally love the texture and flavor when not mashed.
Then that wouldn't be sweet potato casserole, that would be candied yams.
Have this every year for thanksgiving one of my favorites
Oh hi Brad Pitt didn't think you'd show up
I hope we get these videos for YEARS to come. Keep it up Babish.
Oh boy, here come the America-bashers, rushing in to criticize this dish without the context of knowing that we literally only eat this once, maybe twice per year, and also pretending not to understand that sweet, salty, and savory flavors can be complementary and that homogeneity in flavor profiles is BORING.
My family always had sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, and I know this is going to sound like White Nonsense, but raisins stirred in. Little bursts of bright flavor! Craisins work too
You're correct, it does sound like "white nonsense".
Do you think you can make all of Porky's Buttered Dishes that were seen/mentioned in The Looney Tunes Show episode, "Bobcats on Three" before Thanksgiving?
I make the same casserole but I roast halved sweet potatoes instead of sour vide. The potatoes get slightly caramelized and are so delicious.
What if you made the feast from Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone on the week of Thanksgiving: Lamb chops, chicken wings, french fries, etc.
Well, they are SWEET potatoes. Personally I've never had savory sweet potatoes so I couldn't imagine a unsweetened version.
The absolute best thanksgiving side hands down
Do you think before Thanksgiving, you make all the Picnic foods that appeared in SpongeBob episode, "Club SpongeBob"?
Im adding this singleton 12 hot dish to thanksgiving this year, 100%.
As an european this food was always so weird to me. 😂
As an american this food is weird to me. Mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallow on top? Yuck. The only 3 things marshmallow goes on are rice crispy treats, smores, and fluffernutter sandwiches.
it is weird to me as well and I am American....
My fave add-ins for sweet potato casserole: cinnamon, crushed pineapple, and chopped walnuts. Marshmallows (toasted to crusty brown perfection) on top of course. Sweet potatoes just mashed. I swear, I could (and have!) eat this for breakfast. XD
I know this is a real dish, but to me as a Brit it's about as bad as Rachel's trifle/shepherds pie combo.
Agree, I'm baffled by this, and that it'd be served with a roast!?
As an American, I have never, and probably will never have this....lol. I never understood it being served as part of a Thanksgiving dinner. Its more of a dessert than anything, but idk. It seems popular amongst my friends, I've just never been interested. 🤷🏻♀
A few years back we stop making this because the marshmallows just seemed too fake. We now roast the yams and put a molasses sauce of them during the roasting period. Much better and allows the yam's flavor to stand out.
I love sweet potato casserole! But when I was a kid, we didn't have it topped with marshmallows. We always topped ours with candied nuts if I remember right. I can't remember off the top of my head, but they still had that sweet flavor without being overly sugary
"Congrats to everyone who is early and who found this comment" 🏆
We always used cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger in our sweet potato casserole. We topped it with marshmallows, didn't use vanilla. I might have to try it with vanilla now.😆
It tastes best when in chunks from first recipe, you can also use the canned ones too.
Aye babish, I made the first, basic sweet potato casserole for dinner last night, it was a hit, thanks for saving thanksgiving.
