  • Karen Carpenter possessed a three-octave contralto range which allowed her to create a distinctive melancholy sound that made her one of the most recognizable and respected vocalist during the 1970's.
Karen was voted the best drummer over Led Zeppelin's John Bonham in a Playboy poll conducted in 1975. Her drumming proficiency came from having a jazz background and marching band experience which allowed her to transition with effortless ease and subtle grace much like her idol, Buddy Rich.
Karen is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, despite having won multiple Grammy awards and selling over 100 million records - an oversight some would call beyond comprehension.

The Carpenters are definitely deserving of a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If they were black like The Jackson 5, they would be. Maybe that's hard to hear, but it's true. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a political mess.

Johnny Rivers is not black and he is still not in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame.

@fool4singing It might have nothing to do with Karen Carpenter and Richard Carpenter "being white", it might be because they were considered, "goodie two shoes" or what Richard said that they were labeled, as he called it a "goodie four shoes". Hard Rock was considered edgy and rebellious, but Karen Carpenter and Richard Carpenter had wholesome music that had a softer sound that was popular with "middle class America". It is a shame because there is nothing wrong with how beautiful Karen Carpenter sang love songs and other songs, not to mention Karen Carpenter was an outstanding drummer too!! Maybe Richard Carpenter or his Daughter could look into having Karen Carpenter's name enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, maybe with all that is happening in America today, people would enjoy their sweet sound, unlike back in the 1970s?

It's not beyond comprehension. The HOF is notoriously political. They put in there who they want, not who should be.
