No house is unscathed. Just because the frame still stands on the stilts doesn't mean that water wasn't flowing through the structure, at velocity

It would be real interesting to find out why some houses faired so much better than others. Was it the framing, windows failed, roof attachments, where there different years with different specs, or so many other things.

Wow! Looks a lot like Mexico Beach in Florida after hurricane Michael in 2018. Lots of leveled and partially destroyed homes. When do people realize its not so smart building so close to the ocean. This is the 3rd hurricane to hit Louisiana in 1 years time. Yes its a beautiful area most of the time, now it looks like a war zone it will take years to rebuild if they choose to do so.

    • @OilBarron84

it's not about being close to the ocean, it's that the area is prone to big tropical storms and hurricanes and that it' is at or below sea level - a very bad combination. Most coast line in the world is up 5-10 feet minimum.

    • @mdutchy2582
      @mdutchy2582 3 роки тому +1

Its incredibly smart actually. The views are stunning. The walk to the beach is minimal. The sea breeze, the sound of ocean waves. To top it all off you get a brand new home built after it gets wiped out in a storm, courtesy of insurance. It doesnt matter where you build in the big picture. Tornados, earth quakes, floods, fires, there is no safe space in life.

Life is a gamble. There are risks no matter where you choose to live. If you love living on/near the ocean, You build strong, have great insurance and get out of the way when hurricanes are coming. The pay off is, most of your life, you live happily where you want to live. It's pretty simple.

I live in North Carolina and would not buy a house on the beach. These storms are going to keep coming. Why rebuild in places that keep getting flattened?
There are places here prone to repeated flooding where owners have been given fair market value and moved. One apartment complex flooded over and over again requiring repeated swift water rescue.
Disasters happen, but places where they happen over and over again should make us behave differently.

Scenes of destruction, very good shooting. But...am I unique in finding myself wanting to see more detail of the houses that survived, some apparantly almost unscathed? Obviously, a lot of the damage was likely due to being unluckily downstream of structures shedding massive-but-buoyant structural elements, which acted as battering rams pushed along by wave action. I'd bet money that strip where every house is gone to the piling foundations was the victim of one or two such structures on the upwind side. Even a well-designed and well-constructed house would be unable to survive much solid pounding. But there are really quite a few homes mixed in that really aren't even obviously damaged. If I were in the construction or insurance business, shots of those might be worth a lot.

Build were you have to replace less. Build were the home has a curb corners, for starters. Just add to the corners with, SIDE PADS. Design were the wind has nothing to hold on to or get a grip. This would not be to hard to do and this would be also affordable. You would "think" insurance companies 30 years ago, would have been looking in on simple design wind prevention. Affordable and adequate living. Build a strong curvature add on to the roof, over hang. That can easily collect water for storage for garden and fruit trees. Design, where the wind can't left-up, ANYTHING. A strong wind hitting your home, what do you do to diver it's force. Design where the wind has NOTHING to hold on to and is diverted away. Take simple steps on building better controlling wind diversion. Retain water for your fruit trees. THEN STUDY THE RESULTS. Look at a school bus design, it's round. Drop long over hangs and lock them along with all shutters. Have nothing that the wind can hold on to, ALSO study the direction of the winds weekly path to your location, before building. Think of a school bus. Have every thing lock down in 15 minutes, when emergencies hit your area.

I know most of these people don't believe in climate change but it is slapping us in the face with every fire, flooding and hurricane. So all of these people need to rethink where they will rebuild. Insurance companies and utilities need to decide if they are going to provide services to these areas I residents rebuild in same location.

Fires, floods and hurricanes have been happening for millennia. Nothing to do with CO2 and man made causes. Al Gore owns beachfront property.

@@peggyt1243 exactly, doesn't matter the reason! The climate is changing. Also I wouldn't call this cituation beachfront. Looks more like a sand dunes.

@Rebecca Baird I have lived at the beach here in Florida for 25 years and there is beach erosion and there have been homes lost.
I know about dunes and nothing will convince me to throw more money for roads and infrastructure in areas that will continue to have strong hurricanes and those roads will again be washed away.
I've been through Andrew in south Florida and watched Katrina wrath.

I'm guessing you have never been on a coastal vacation? People need to live here for tourists. Scientists also live here. People who work on oil barrages. Don't be quick to judge.

Tell that to the people in Philedelphia who just experienced a once in 200 years flood event thanks to IDA.

Spent many summers on Grand Isle, it's just a sand bar for rich folks, not one federal dollar should be spent to repair anything.

Really?? We lost our place there, along with so many others, and that’s your comment? People have lived there for generations and it’s a wonderful place. If you know nothing about being or living there, learn some compassion, and keep your comments to yourself.
