It’s been 20 years and still no other media has topped this movie’s werewolf designs
Agreed. The only one that I can think of that comes close is the giant werewolf from the second to last Underworld movie.
love death robots shapeshifters episode is honestly the closest thing we have that is like this. although it's a full on cgi render movie.
@@DjuraValtr Good point. I forgot about those werewolves.
@@user-ed5kj1kl2f The Last Voyage of the Demeter might be pretty cool but I agree.
The wolf had the best werewolf. It looked more natural. This is too much cgi.
I love how when the werewolf transfroms his human skin just sort of falls off. It's not often werewolves are shown to shed like a lizard. The hair just falling off when he turns back was also a nice touch.
The series Hemlock Grove had a great transformation akin to this one as well… but the show declined in season 2
Skinwolves in Warhammer Fantasy do the same but less cleanly
Isn't that from the folklore? I remember reading that to know if someone is a werewolf, you have to look underneath their skin. If there's fur underneath the skin, then that person is a werewolf.
Best Dracula and Best Werewolf designs in a movie… probably ever.
Apart from Rick Baker’s Werewolf design for An American Werewolf in London
It's a shame to that this movie's plot and direction suck.

That CGI werewolf though, 20 years later still unbeaten as the best looking in cinema.
It’s actually kind of amazing how well the CGI holds up. Sure, it’s a little rough in some areas but overall, it aged like a fine wine
It's still pretty 90s CG looking though, looks too clean in places and lacks photoreal textures and lighting. Imagine if Weta digital who did the modern planet of the apes trilogy did the creatures.

I love the fact that Gabriel was toying with Dracula in the first round of the fight, even showing his claws to scare him, but then the transformation turns off and he runs from the vampire. And then when he get his powers back, he attacks Dracula with everything to finish him quickly, bcuz now he knows that he don't have time to waste and he was lucky that Vlad likes to talk a lot, bcuz if dracula was serious, it would have all ended for him in that instant without powers.
That's because Gabriel wasn't even in control. Once he's a werewolf he losses all emotion of human thoughts.
Also Dracula have been trying to get Gabriel to drop down his guard. Again Dracula has many chances to kill Gabriel however what if he can turn Gabriel into his servant? The biggest achievement would be that
@@koreancowboy42plus Dracula didn’t want Gabriel to die he wanted him on his side they used to be best friend

I'll be honest, the CGI holds out pretty well. its sells the ammount of impact that can be happened when two baddas monsters fight. the facial features is really expressive and monstrous.
The older you get with CGI, the more good CGI still looks good, but unfinished. If you remake this movie today with the same effort in the CGI, but with better rendering technology, it probably looks amazing. The same is true for the CGI in the original Jurassic Park films and Lord of the Rings.
@@geoffreysorkin5774 I kind of like it like that though. Seems more classic
Better than marvel
@@geoffreysorkin5774 Why does marvel and rings of power look like shit then?
Well the reason because most CGI sequences now lack practical sets, backgrounds, and natural lighting, thats why in a way this holds up.
This movie is 19 years old and still, best werewolf design EVER!!!
So fcking true i sent this to a friend who never saw it before who keeps bragging that underworld with their ugly ass looking werewolf has better design and he literally ate everything he said lmao
Might have something to do with the fact that big-time movie, TV show, and video game producers/companies seem to be allergic to werewolves.

You’re correct that character development and build up to the climax are the very factors that make this movie great.
Best part of the battle is that Dracula doesn't even attempt to beat Gabriel....
He just tries to run away at all times..
Great cherography
Dracula actually got some good shots in her just didnt finish the job for what reason I have no clue because he had gabriel on the floor before he flew off but that was a mistake it completely put him at the werewolfs mercy.
@@brandonspringfield2861 Dracula got good shots in… he’s entire strategy was to just run away… the werewolf is a LOT stronger and faster than him so Dracula just needed to stun him and run away…
Remember once the clock strikes 12, the werewolf comes under his control… the only thing Dracula needs to do is run away
dracula was a dissadvantage hes fighting in his small terrain if there in outside he might stand a chance
@@aerosdacillo1227The problem is, even if Dracula were to have more space
Gabriel would most likely still beat as in the film
Van Helsing is confirmed the strongest werewolf imo
It probably shows that even the one thing that has a chance of killing Dracula might not be enough to kill him. He is extremely strong and has centuries of experience, which shows during the first few seconds of their fight. If he used everything he had with the sole intention of killing him, he could have won. However, this is probably the first time for hundreds of years where he is reminded that he is not immortal, and this is an opponent who has the power to kill him if he loses. He is a coward, he is used to fighting opponents without any chance of losing. Plus he is not taking anything in the world seriously, there is no other explanation that he could not finish off the Valerius family.
The way Dracula says "correct" almost feels like "You can try but you will fail."
I also absolutely admire the fact how the dwarven henchmen immediately start to run for their lives when Van Helsing Turns into a Werewolf they are like Nope! Dracule doesnt pay us enough for this
0:35 hugh jackman wolverine groaning 0:38 his mix with the werewolf roar

Hard to believe nearly 20 yrs old...and the monster designs are some of the best ever!
Seeing a fierce and savage/sadistic werewolf overpowering a powerful vampire like Drac is really a badass and awesome thing that you rarely see in most cinemas nowadays. And it is natural though... Lycans (Werewolves and Blood Wolves) are natural enemies of Vampires.
Predators*. Werewolves were always traditionally hunters of vampires and could overpower them quite easily.
underworld...
Kinda like World of Darkness, Werewolfs or “Garous” are Gaias warriors of war, Who are absolute tanks in warfare obliterating armies in seconds where even vampires like thin bloods and Kindreds try not to mess with.
Not as per the original Lore
As per the Lore you cannot kill a Vampire like Dracula or even normal Vampire without proper measures. Werewolves also don’t operate like in movies- they only turn when there is a full moon. They don’t get any abilities otherwise outside of that window. Hence it is called a curse.
Vampires are undead and can never be killed. They can only be put to an eternal sleep or a dormant state.
@@jheartnote1401 No. In Lore Werewolves aren't turn by full moons. They turn whenever
Roxburgh murdered it with his Dracula. Over the top and theatrical. So frickin good!

This movie was way ahead of it's time, way too underrated and is still the best in my opinion. It's like an evergreen movie in case of werewolf and vampire genre. Best Werewolf design and dracula's. Good Cast. Best Music.
All together a very good movie
This movie was way ahead of its time. The story and world work really well together, and the actors do a fantastic job. The creature designs are awesome and portrayed in a great way. The actor who plays Dracula does a great job. Hugh Jackman is amazing as Van helsing and really brings the character to life. Best part is when Van Helsing turns into a werewolf with how the beast is beneath his skin and falls off during the transformation

Theatricallly, this is a fantastic movie.
The pacing never slows to a point that feels boring and too drawn out.
Every scene pushes the film forward.
Despite having so many different characters, it is all blended so well that it is a fun watch.
Certified: "2000s Jam".
I do love the implication of the story between Gabriel and Dracula.
Dracula greets him like an old friend/enemy.
They knew each other, and Gabriel killed Vlad, possibly on divine orders, which allowed him to become Dracula.
But Gabriel has been carrying around Vlad's ring all this time. Their connection was important to him.
Shame we never got a sequel to explore it further, but I almost prefer that we don't get the full story. Just the idea is fascinating.
This movie had the best opening sequence I've ever seen in films
To this day, this is the one werewolf design I have as a standard, that I uphold every other werewolf design to!
I still remember how *addicted* to this movie I was as a kid.
Watched this movie almost 10 times already plus the best scene for me was at the end where wolverine cried while holding her omg I'm dead
Wolverine 💀
Wolverine? Its werewolf..
Underrated movie I remember seeing it in theaters with my dad when it came out me and my dad were in awe of how badass this movie was
The music, the choirs, makes this fight so much more epic!
Also, I like how they portrayed Dracula as actually being fearful for his life while still trying to maintain some semblance of class when he's so clearly panicking inside. Besides switching between running away and fighting back, he keeps trying to bargain for peace. Which is _so_ neat! Rarely do you find the villains actually being afraid of the hero, and being the first one wanting for a non-violent confrontation.
Ridiculously underrated classic!
Everything was good about the movie especially epic monster designs and the athmosphere

They did though? Van Helsing is actually the Archangel Gabriel in "human" form. On earth for some reason I can't remember right now, but the fight between him and Dracula was how he lost his memory and came to work for the Vatican.
Exactly wish they did. Would be nice if a part 2 was about that may be their first fight centuries ago. But sadly its been 20 years and no part 2

My favorite werewolf transformation ever. No other movie or show has topped the way he shifts
Dracula's intellect made him win in the beginning but the Werewolf's bestial Rage and Ferociousness proved way too much for even Dracula to handle.
Yes, Dracula was kicking ass in the beginning. But it barely did anything to Wolf Helsing.
The way Dracula talks to Van Hellsing was like he was talking to a old friend
Dracula had a huge window of opportunity to incapacitate Van Hellsing after the clouds covered the moon, instead he tried to talk him into joining him
1:55 whenever a girl gives me a compliment
I swear this the best Dracula and Werewolf designs till this day, look at 0:39 and 3:48.
In what movie do we have a werewolf with such a big body? Not to mention the upright ear design and the well-made nose. In other movies, werewolves often look like an overly hairy wolf that can stand up, or in older movies it looks like a normal human with a little extra fur. I don't know, the werewolf design in this movie looks very clean and modern.
Believe or not, but some people who have encountered Dogmen (aka Real Non-Human Werewolves) say that some of the creatures they seen looked just like if not similar to the Van Hellsing Werewolf. Also the werewolves from Dog Soldiers, Bad Moon, & The Howling are also similar to some Dogman descriptions. So it makes you wonder if the people who designed those unique werewolf looks, got them from studying the detail accounts of Dogman sightings.
And also muscular and terrifying. This is where the werewolf gets justice.
This is what I like about Sommers he does not care about realism but only about spectacle
