Great to hear a genuine perspective on Shostakovich’s final Symphony. It must have been quite an experience to be there at the premiere and to hear such an unexpected piece. The optimism that Shostakovich had despite everything he had lived through is very inspiring.
Time sure has passed. Saw Bychkov conduct a few times live in Cologne when he was with the WDR. I thought: "Look how much he aged since then". Then I thought about it and realized: That was 24 years ago. 🤣
