Please please everyone be careful with the Britpart relays. I fitted one last year and within 6 months I managed to twist and bend the shaft. Britpart and Paddocks weren't interested when I tried to raise this huge safety issue. I know you think I'm full of poop but this was my personal experience. The old shaft survived 17 years of hard off roading and the Britpart one twisted on a green lane within months :( I've still got it if you'd like to test it? Anyway, love your work! x
I NEVER use shit-part for anything mechanical. Only plastic trim parts etc. (I’m an ex LR mechanic) seen so many mechanical failures from them. Fitted a new track rod ball joint and the new shit-part one was more worn than the old original one lol There should be something they do about it legally to stop it, they just don’t care about anyone’s safety
I bought their swivels and one exploded lost a wheel off road luckily and not on the motorway I tried to get them to accept it was a bad casting no joy so I stopped buying from them anymore,
I’m sure your whole audience is in awe of your engineering skills and attention to detail but can I just commend your video editing and story telling too? I know we all wait months between episodes but the way you put your videos together is just so entertaining and makes the wait worthwhile.
@@manfredschmalbach9023 No no, it's perfectly valid to send hatred towards a manufacturer, being an engineer just means you have justifiable, measurable and quantifiable reasons for doing so.
👍👍😎👍👍 - So I was shutting the computer down and headed to bed....... but for some reason I did one last YT home page refresh before I locked my screen....... Well, It's only 43 minutes long and I know I won't be able to fall asleep knowing there is an unwatched CROKER vs Rover out there. I'm never disappointed after watching a fresh CROKER drop.
Other videos repair a Honda Civic from the scrapyard to brand new, in the time it takes Croker to fix a marginally broken steering relay. Best Content Ever!
Im very happy to see you used the old housing. Theres so much more sattisfaction in reparing an old part then simply replacing it, regardless of the quality of the replacement product.
Hello there! I am from Cyprus! We are usually not very useful to the world.. but hey we saved 1 Land Rover in NZ:) Good luck and thank you for the amazing videos!
One bit of advice I got from the Land Rover series community was to never remove the steering relay from the chassis, so to see you remove it and restore it you have my repect
I hope I live long enough to see this completed. There's nothing wrong with me (health wise/that I know of) but to have my final breath knowing that more content would be forthcoming would be one of my life's greatest regrets.
Britpart steering relays are deadly. I know of five different Land Rover guys who all had shafts literally snap while they were driving, one of which was on the motorway doing 65 mph at the time, his Land Rover was a right off, thankfully he came out of it with just a couple of broken bones, so you absolutely did the right thing, I'd have used your original 'slighly damaged' relay over one of their cheesium parts.
I seem to remember in the dim and distant past that the Relay also acted as a primitive steering damper, mainly for offroad use preventing (or slowing) un-commanded spinning of the steering wheel. I also remember rebuilding a few of these. We always used the same bench and vice, away from rest of the workshops, with an old 25 Lt grease can stuffed with rags to catch the flying bits. I have to say though, I have never seen an old spring that weak. Saying that, most of our swaps were due to damage rather that age related wear issues. Brilliant content as usual. Thank you.
if these parts are so hard to come by these days, then I think it would be a decent solution to install a proper steering damper and make the relay a simple throughshaft with bearings and seals
So you bought the last shaft from the Land Rover Treasure shop. 6 Months ago they had two and yes I almost bought both of them. I had a moment of feeling greedy as I didnt need both so only put one in the basket. I am now absolutely chuffed that it was bought by you as I get to see how to change it 🙂. Nice one Geoff great video as usual!! All the best Mike
That was an amazing breakdown of how to rebuild the steering relay. Loved the commentary and videography. I burst out laughing when you pulled out the Toyota bag. I am in the middle of rebuilding my 1977 FJ40 LandCruiser, so I found that extremely humorous. Excellent video.
I remember many moons ago trying to remove a steering relay from my 1976 series 3. I tried a jack underneath it, it just lifted the car off the road. 3 hours lying on my back, smacking it with a 2lb hammer it finally came out 🥵 I was in my 20s, it would kill me now 😂
I hope your children appreciate how much effort you're putting into this project for them. You will obviously be too old to drive it by the time it's completed. 🙃 I put in an upside-down smiley face there so that it would look normal to down under.
10 out of 10 for getting it done, 12 out of 10 for having the guts to mess with a loaded spring using cable ties ( I am in awe ).. Great job Geoffrey. Thanks for the cliff hanger share, safety squints engaged while viewing... LOL.

This is the video that UA-cam has been waiting for. Brilliant, amusing, full of facts and plenty of jeopardy, grease, oil, paint and machines. So glad you're a step nearer completion. Will it be you or Binky?
Another great and entertaining video. Also, its important to me that im not mistaken for someone who likes Land Rovers. Im here purely for the entertainment factor
Thanks for the presentation - I would imagine that your audience was full of tension to the same level as the spring watching that re-assembly!!! Great stuff - stay safe!!
I always feel like Christmas has arrived early with the arrival of a new video of you! Thank you for all the effort you put into them, it's greatly appreciated!
Super video, Geoff! Regarding the zipties, my thought would be to hold the compressed spring in the spring compressor, and attach a single, ziptie. Then back off the compressor a bit and see if the ziptie breaks. In this way, we could estimate the safety factor before removing the spring compressor completely. Essentially determine how many zip ties are really needed. Land Rover sure had a knack for over complicating things…
Originality trumps aesthetically perfect. Definitely in favour of reusing the original over a 'perfect' newer part ....plus, as a series IIA owner I might want to buy your SII relay housing 😁
I have been trying to remove my steering relay from my 1965 IIA for two years, so when I eventually persuade it to come out I can use your excellent video to help me decide whether or not to rebuild it before reinstalling it! Thanks again Mr Croker!
This came at the right time! Putting another TDI in my series, and I needed convincing that I’m not crazy for doing it, at least someone else is struggling 😂
Absolutely painstakingly watching you compress that spring. I jumped when the oil squirted out, I thought it was the spring taking out your skull! Nice job once again!
Hi Geoffrey I’m restoring a 1962a series down in Christchurch and have also damaged to housing in getting mine out of the chassis. Would you want to sell your S2 housing? Thanks Julian
Just re watched the whole series while I wait for the next episode, which will be here when it is. Love the work, the filming and editing and of course the dry wit. Oh and the tool stuff too. For S3 armchair fans check out Maximus Ironthumper, a blacksmith, whose chassis up S3 restoration includes lots of welding and mechanic ing and salvaging of old parts stored in a hedge. Also does blacksmithing etc. Keep up the good work
I always enjoy your videos which as a non land rover owner and I'm certainly not mechanically and minded says a lot. Your ingenuity to solve problems impresses me, especially the number of times after market parts seem to waste your time and money. Thanks for posting the content.
Just so good, your land rover set of videos has entertained me so much, I’ve learnt a bunch of stuff too, thankyou so much. Please do another series 😎🤣🤣
Awesome rebuild. Glad the spring didn't sprung on you. If you can get your hands on some daubert Cromwell VCI sprays, I recommend spraying all of your assemblies with 3100 (extreme), or 5100 (less extreme) if they won't be visible but will be exposed to the elements. And anything that is visible, 7100. It won't leave a visible film, but will offer a degree of protection. That's what I use to keep machine shop rust at bay in the humid US south, unless I can VCI bag it or use VCI emitters.
I had visions of employing the Myford Tailstock to compress that spring, your method was better, albeit with more pucker factor. Great job as ever, great entertainment.

Yup. I wouldn't trust the BP unit with a mower, let alone a car. Cheap trash.
