The singer Sting worked as a school teacher before The Police. This is more or less a song about this particular “struggle”of being a hot teacher. There is a reference to the book Lolita too when they mention the author Nabokov.
more specifically "the old man" (Humbert) in that book by Nabokov, who wants to have adult relations with a 12 year old girl he is infatuated with.
I appreciate that you used parentheses around the word struggle
@@weedthepeople2795 Those are quotations.
@@paulfrombrooklyn5409 Riiiiiight.....Thats the word for it......that comment was brought to you by our friend weed
Well, I don't know what his specific experience was like and how he reacted, but the narrator of the song sounds pretty culpable. He's makes it clear that he is not discouraging the attention and is making excuses for his behavior.
Stewart Copeland's drumming in this song is immaculate...
Yeah, he is a fantastic drummer. The other two are great too.
All 3 are fantastic musicians, but Stewart is a fine percussionist period. His work on Wrapped around your finger or walking on the moon are fine examples
Anymore, when I hear The Police, I mostly listen to what Stewart is up to.
@@rickyprice7597 He should have his own talk show, he is so interesting, just crazy talented and humble
I love how he's just slightly behind the beat on his snare hits, just like Charlie Watts.
As a former educator, I can attest that teachers do get flirted with by high school aged girls. And while on some level I was flattered, I found it completely unnerving to find some indirect and subtle ways to communicate that it is both unwanted and that it ain’t going to go anywhere. You don’t want to be that guy who straight-up calls them out because they’ll get their feelings hurt, deny they’re flirting, then spin it that the teacher initiated it. And, if there’s ever any temptation you damned sure better not act on it because of both legal AND moral consequences.
We had a teacher who got caught (by his wife) with a student.
The only thing that surprised us was him being that dumb. She and a couple friends were all over him, in school, aggressively so.
Facts. 💯
Oh boy, do I recognise that. Spent three months as a sub phys ed. to 4 classes of 14-15 year olds, back in the early 2000s.
Of course I/we knew of the mindset and mental makeup of teens and the sociological ramifications, but it was still a surprise to experience the length to which individuals would go, in order to assert themselves and test boundaries.
And where do you think the inspiration for this song came from? … Sting (His students called him Mr. Sumner) got flirted with plenty as a good looking young English teacher back in the day. He confessed that he couldn’t believe he was able to wield such good self control. 😁
Not if you are a grumpy SOB.
"That book by Nabokov" was "Lolita", written in 1955(ish) about the very subject you think it's about. Was worked into a movie of the same title by Stanley Kubrick.
Right...this song simply is a thought experiment of how the singer Sting was a school teacher before this band assembled and that he was tempted by the attention some girl was giving him and he knew there would be consequences for his actions if he ever acted on the feelings. This song is not autobiographical. Its just playing on the circumstances that were present at the time. STING NEVER HAD RELATIONS WITH HIS STUDENT. End of story XD...
WIKIPEDIA:
In 1993, however, he said of the song's inspiration, "You have to remember we were blond bombshells at the time and most of our fans were young girls so I started roleplaying a bit. Let's exploit that."[6] He also stated that the song does not have a basis in fact, stating that "To be frank, it was right in our market. A lot of teenage girls were buying our records. So the idea was, let's write a Lolita story."
The Teacher is the one singing the chorus. She's too young and foolish and in love to make good decisions. He's literally shaking and coughing because he's creeped out at himself because yeah... she's attractive. And then how people will talk? PLEASE don't stand so close to me.
Completely agree. Once in a while I'll hear someone say that this is a "creepy" song. But it's about a teacher who is put into an uncomfortable position, and he does the right thing. What more do you want?! (lol) In fact, both of the subjects of this song are treated with sympathy, which I appreciate. Now if you want *creepy,* then go check out "Every Breath You Take"!
Does the right thing? He picks her up from the bus stop in his car and then later is shaking with GUILT.
It’s TOTALLY the Teacher saying “Don’t stand do close to me”! The student has the crush and he is getting nervous because he’s tempted but he knows he should not give in. It must be really too close for comfort because the other teachers are starting to notice the “vibe” between them. 😄
15-16yr olds have zero filter. They don’t understand the consequences of their actions. Having an older man desire them would be even more of a high than taking street drugs! (They wouldn’t be the ones begging for mercy.)
This is definitely the teacher’s point of view.
Yeah, but he is also picking her up at the bus stop with his car...
@@nealm6764 I don’t think so. It’s on his mind when he sees her there and he knows that it would be so easy to offer her a ride. But I think it’s just a thought in his head.
@@sklthedful Interesting. It is possible I suppose.
This was classic back in the day. Check out - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.
They can really go down the rabbit hole with The Police.
Incredible song.
And Walking on the moon...that's my favourite :D
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic is one I automatically turn way up every time I hear it. Walking On The Moon will stick with you for hours. One of my favorites is Canary In A Coal Mine.
That's still my favourite from them...
The sound of this band always makes me warm and nostalgic inside. Sting’s lyrics are poetic and deep, dropping a Nabokov reference!
My uncles favorite band, this was his favorite song, can't help but to think of him when I hear it, great band great song.
This song is exactly what you think it's about Brad
No trouble deciphering these lyrics, hah!
Yeah you could see it in his expression when he first realized
Right... however...this song simply is a thought experiment of how the singer Sting was a school teacher before this band assembled and that he was tempted by the attention some girl was giving him and he knew there would be consequences for his actions if he ever acted on the feelings. When you're ready for more from The Police, check out "Bring on the Night", "Driven to Tears", "Walking on the Moon", "Spirits in the Material World", "Everything She Does Is Magic", "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da", and "King of Pain" along with many others.
Bring on the night is crack.
Murder by numbers.
First 3 albums absolutely fantastic, mixture of punk, postpunk, ska, latin, reggae. The police were made up of 3 musical geniuses, breaking up when they were at their peak.
Canary in a Coalmine, another great one
Regatta De Blanc
This is such a sophisticated song and the drumming is just incredible. Interesting that you're never talking about those aspects of a song.
Why don't people understand the genius of Copeland. All you hear about is Neil Peart and Danny Carey(who I certainly love)but Stewart gets passed up. Sad
@@grendelink1751 Tommy Lee > Copeland
So tight
@@grendelink1751 not in my book. I love him in oyster head. Stew Trey and Les can't get any better
@@grendelink1751 Stewart has always been my favorite... And he's even better live!
I always think of precision when I hear The Police playing. Every note is distinct and deliberate, every word enunciated clearly. Great band.
If tough lyrics is your bag then King of Pain is a masterclass….Please do more Police hits or you will be missing out
Synchronicity 2, All killer no filler.
You know it's a good song reaction when Brad's eyebrows lift off from his forehead and head toward outer space.
PS: If you liked this, check out The Police: "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic."
Edit: No, Brad was right on this one - it's sung from the teacher's perspective. Fun fact: Sting used to be a teacher, so I'm guessing he's had relevant personal experience.
If you want another layer to the story, Sting, the songwriter and singer for the Police, was a teacher before he became a rock star, and said that he'd "been through the business of having 15-year-old girls fancying me - and my really fancying them!" Doesn't mean anything happened, but obviously he understood the temptation the teacher in the song was going through.
yes, Brad&Lex, Sting plays a teacher in the music video
Brad's face as he listens to the lyrics is fantastic - I couldn't stop laughing
Lex, your expression when you heard the first lyrics is priceless!!
Oh, this song is disturbing as hell, and it's *meant* to be disturbing.
Interestingly, The Police also meant for "Every Breath You Take" to be disturbing as well. So when couples started telling Sting it was "their" song, it kind of freaked him out.
"If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free" was sort of his own response to "Every Breath You Take."
Stewart Copeland is such a great drummer, one of the best sounding snares you’ll ever hear, deep yet so crisp, very prominent on so many of their songs, it’s almost like his signature
Andy Summers is the king of building syncopation along with Copeland. The rhythm they create on songs such as So Lonely and this are brilliant.
He’s a genius
Brad, you cracked me up with
"I don't need the layers."
What popped in my head was Smeagol covering his ears, saying "I'm not listening!" while arguing with Gollum (himself). (In Lord Of The Rings)
I love the Police. Check bring on the night, driven to tears, walking on the moon ( listen to the drums in this one), every little thing she does is magic
And, "When the world is running down..."
That intricate hi-hat work is amazing.
So many more Police songs to discover...how about "Everything she does is Magic" or "So Lonely" or "Walking on the Moon"......
They’ve reacted to a few more I already I believe.
@@shammycat3538 not these ones....
Always loved Sting's little dance around 2 and a half minutes into the video for "So Lonely" =)
Another Master piece
Stewart Copeland. His work is so amazing.
Is this a song that Brad can finally understand? We may never know
As a former teacher of 42 years, THIS IS REAL! Greatest fear.....
Ah yes, The Police
Love how they meld rock & Reggae
By far my favorite song from them is "Message In a Bottle"
Im 41 and I grew up with my dad listening to The Police and a lot of new wave. I enjoy your reactions!
Stings voice and the melodies of the Police are so good
"That book by Nabakov", BTW, is "Lolita", a 1955 novel by Vladimir Nabakov, about a prof and an under age object of his desire.
And Lolita was the name of Epstein's jet.
I remember seeing the Police. They would always open their show with that keyboard drone, chimes and such, Stewart hitting a few toms and sporadic guitar sounds going on but u didn't see them yet, just a dark stage! The anticipation was too cool. It was about to go down.
"Spirits in the Material World" is one of my favorite Police songs.
“The Beds Too Big Without You” Just an excellent Police vibe.
Vladimir Nabakov wrote the book Lolita, which has been made into a film adaptation twice, in 1962 by Stanley Kubrick, and in 1997 by Adrian Lyne. It suggests the same context where an underaged girl is smitten by an older man, in this case her stepfather.
The lead singer Sting was a high school level teacher in England, before he become famous... I'm very sure he had plenty of underage girls crushing on him.
(At my high school a cheerleader married the head football coach one month after she graduation. She had just turned 18 and it was a huge scandal, but nothing could be done about it).
What's the scandal part? She 18, two consenting adults. People need to get over themselves and live and let live.
@@ckobo84 The scandal part is that it was obvious they were dating before she turned 18 and while she was a student & he was a teacher at the same school. They probably got married so quickly for the spousal privilege. (A married partner can not be forced into testifing against their spouse).
@@ckobo84
Amazing that you need it explained to you.
@@ckobo84 It's a scandal because she was a student, and he was an adult in an authority position. Derp.
You guys should check out their song "Invisible Sun" or "The Bed's Too Big Without You", both are great lesser known tracks.
Definitely “Beds too big without you” is a great song with cool reggae vibe
Everyone(besides you) is recommending their best known songs. They have so many other great songs. It makes you wonder if they ever owned any of their albums.
@@roundtownKen I guess that's what happens when you hear one song you like from a band and never look any further. All it takes is a deeper dive into their catalogue and there's so much great music.
@@roundtownKen that’s because if I mentioned “I burn for you” I would also be the only one who suggests it and they wouldn’t react to it. So might as well suggest a better Police song than “Don’t stand so close to me.” we could run through a dozen non-hit songs that most probably don’t know exist.
@@jeffjohnson8697 Hey I get it. I'm trying to let folks who have little knowledge of Police know that their best songs may not have been their most commercial and pop radio friendly songs. Songs like Secret Journey, Any other day, Synchronicity, King of Pain, Darkness, etc. The songs you and others suggested aren't bad or sub-par, just possibly not the best thumbnail representation of their music. Maybe an OK place to start. But probably not a destination. Later, after listening to Every breath you take, people may see a song title someone mentioned in these comments and take a listen. They may or may not like what they hear. But they probably have more insight to the sound and characteristics of a group than a 'hits only' listener.
Saw them live in 2007 the reunion tour... best show ever 🔥 they're one of a kind 💯
Love this song. Police - great group. Talented.
'Spirits in a Material World'
The entire band Loved Bob Marley ❤❤❤
Sandwiched between Led Zeppelin and U2 The Police were the biggest band in the world.
Andy Summers' guitar work with the Police was ground breaking. Without him, no Police, IMHO.
@H C Yes but all the guitar parts were Summers. Imagine Message in a Bottle without that opening lick. And so on. That was all AS.
His use of suspensed chords: it sounds easy to play until you try it.
No Summers, no Sting, no Copeland, no Police.
@@martinhayward4466: absolutely. I think this is one of the reasons they were having serious issues at the end, especially Sting and Stewart: they all knew they were equal parts linchpin in the group.
@@stevemd6488 Sting did the music also.
When I was a young child, I heard the lyrics as "don't sell no oats to me". I was convinced this song was about a man selling oats to a man with a horse. Needless to say, my Mom always laughed when this song came on.
King of pain, Invisible sun, Spirits in the material world, Wrapped around your finger, Every little thing she does is magic, and Walking on the moon are some of the other police songs you should hit. They are a Hit Machine.
agreed. I would sugeest the Sting/Lady gaga version of King of Pain ;)
Each musician in this group is amazing - but Stewart on the drums is next level.
In the song Money For Nothing by Dire Straits they have Sting from the Police singing the "I want my MTV" similarly to the chorus "don't stand so close to me". They wanted him because the Police were so huge at that time and Sting was like the face of MTV then.
Stewart Copeland cannot be given enough credit for the sound of the Police
During the late 70's and early 80's The Police were so good that they actually influenced the mighty Rush to change their sound.
One power trio to another. This song could not be released today in our sensitive culture sadly. For music's sake.
And eventually, of course, Copeland and Peart became good friends.
I'm always reminded by this song of how common it was for some of my high school teachers at times to intentionally create distance between themselves and a few of my fellow students. Looking back maybe they sometimes did this because of situations that form the framework of the song. Context is everything so hearing this now as a much older person and not from the perspective of a teenager as I was when it was released. I think the character of the teacher is attempting to keep distance between himself and the student but regardless of his actual actions, "Loose talk in the classroom To hurt they try and try, Strong words in the staff room The accusations fly", again I just think it's a matter of perspective...
One of the first videos I ever saw on MTV in '83 or so. The Police were massive in the '80s. Check out Invisible Sun next if you can.
ok...before I even watch this reaction, I know Brad is going to love this because of the content. Can't wait to see his reaction.
I used to always look forward to when the next Police album came out. This great song is on the album Zenyatta Mondatta. Its well worth a listen.
Saw the Police in 1984 in Vancouver with my sis. Great show. Thanks you guy's, good memory for me!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦😊
I wanted to go, but had no money, and more important, was living with a very strict stepmother who wouldn't have allowed me even if I had a safe ride and the money. I remember a couple of my classmates coming to school with their Police concert T-shirts after that show though. I lived in Delta.
@@alukuhito Sorry to hear that, my father passed when i was young so i told my mom i would not take allowance if i could go to see my fave bands. Glad your still listening.😊🇨🇦
New Wave. The drummer is incredible.
The book by Nabokov is Lolita - One of the most famous stories of a man and a girl (less than) half his age.
I don't think there are many schools anywhere where this hasn't happened 😮 great song 👍🏻
Woooooow!!! I've said it before and I'll say it again. Lex is so insightful.
Definitely check out “Message in a bottle” for some really good Police music
I saw the Police at William and Mary in 1984 Synchronicity tour..excellent show.
listen to the raw POWER in that drumbeat.....stewart copeland is a genius, NO ONE like him
Great choice. I saw the "Ghost in the Machine" concert at MSG.
Such an original band.
Stings bass on Hungry For You, drove me nuts thru the wall of my neighbour in the nursing home…after a week i just banged her door wanting to know what the track was…lol…..she made me a copy of the album, a great one it is.
To add to your Police collection, must listens are:
"Wrapped Around Your Finger" (depth)
"King of Pain" (viscerally relatable)
"Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" (unrequited love, yet upbeat)
Honestly, you can't go wrong with any song by The Police. Their songs do have an assortment of vibes, but they are all good ones! ☮️💜😊
Cant Stand Losing You is more the vibe you want.
In my junior high back in the 80's, our drama teacher ran off with one of the students. Huge scandal. He had been sleeping with girls in his classes. (he was good looking and apparently charming, we didn't get along and I was kicked out of his class. He always gave me the creeps) A bunch of the parents found out, sued the school, sued him after he was caught, but not before one of the fathers " ran " into him in some store parking lot. When he got out of the hospital, he had a huge list of charges, as well as having to register as a sex offender. I don't remember how many years he went away for, his life was ruined, his wife divorced him and I'd heard he commit the big S. I can't confirm that though. As for the girl? Got pregnant, though no one knew if it was the teacher, she left school. Not sure after that. It was so insane, this wasn't even high school.
Thank you guys!!!!! Love our energy!
Sting was a teacher before he became a rock star.the teacher in the song was telling the girl not to stand so close to him because he was temped. The book was Lolita by Nabokov.
Welcome to one of the best drummers in the World!!
I enjoyed your reaction🤗" If you can, Message in a bottle" is one of their very best.
One of my fave 80s songs! ♥
Interesting side note is that Sting was a school teacher in his native England before he became a rock star. Fantastic band. Legendary. Stewart Copeland is arguably the best drummer in rock history. Andy Summers is one of the most influential guitarists in rock history. Sting is a genius when it comes to songwriting and music in general. I'm not saying that The Police are the greatest band of all time, but The Police are the greatest band of all time. :)
In the 60's 70s and 80s you are able to hook up with your teacher no one cared..
My high school science teacher we had a couple of flings. 🎉🎉 She was amazing
"Glad someone is saying it!" IKR!!
You should react to their song: WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER
"Don't stand so close to me," is definitely from the man's perspective.
Golden Earring - Radar Love
(1970s classic rock hit)
Stewart Copeland drumming was so tight and crisp. and the phlange sound on the guitar made it special. Stings voice is so Raggae..
Like Eminem, Sting used songs to portray his past. He was a school teacher before fronting The Police
Here is an absolute classic
Tim Minchin singing Prejudice…it’s pure class and hilarious
Paul
All songs are great. He was an English teacher. A Special on PBS had interviews w. Him and his wife, Trudy. They own an organic farm, vineyard & restaurant in Italy. Songs without Police are good also. At 64 still love the melodies and thought provoking lyrics of most tunes. 🎶 🎸
Message in A Bottle, Roxanne, Walking on the Moon, I can't stand losing you. Anything from Syncronicity.
Their style at that time was known as ska or white Reggae, that’s what they called it at least.
I dated my college professor in the 90"s and he picked me up in his bmw with this song playing and it was raining we had been dating a while. He was the best sex I ever had. I knew what it was all about. My dad wanted to have him removed from the university but my mom intervened in the weirdest way ever. She told my dad if we step in we lose our daughter forever. Note I was not a minor. She had lunch with my professor and he told her how he felt about me. She told him how she felt and they were the same age. It worked out . I never wanted to be his wife. We just had so much fun and I learned a lot from him about art and he is famous in my area. I was his muse I believe. He called me his Gaston Lachaise. I was fit but voluptuous. End of I do not need judgement. I knew what I was doing and it was an amazing time for me!
It’s definitely a song that couldn’t be released today. Even though he didn’t do anything - yeah the song is from the teacher’s perspective- the song was still risqué cause he was fighting the urge, ‘Frustration so bad it makes him cry…’
This ska style of music that the Police put out at the time made the song a hit. It was on heavy rotation at the time.
I think the rate of maturity for boys and girls has slowed through the decades because life became so much easier for people after WW2.
I graduated in '74 and i ran across a picture of the senior class of 1945 and they looked like grown adults and we looked like kids.
The Police are the best 3 piece ever and that includes Rush and The Jam
First time i heard this was in 1980 i was 15young and i still loves the police today ❤
Hope you're feeling better Lex.. I had it about a month ago. More vitamin C and Zinc. and if possible rest as much as possible.
John Miles- MUSIC- live 2012 @the proms!
Lex will love guitar. Brad will love the blend of rock and symphony!
This is a one off gem from 1976.
Andy Summers guitar work is so glassy clean!
The police are awesome. In my top 10 bands. Love em
Brads face🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I don't think you expected that mate.
The Police ... My favourite band of all time... They were so different...
The teacher is saying it. The singer Sting used to be a teacher in the north east of England … Newcastle
As teenage boys we had huge crushes on some of the beautiful young female teachers... as a girl somehow it seems worse when in fact it's the same...a young female teacher in the UK was struck off last week after having wild parties with teenage boy. He was eighteen.
Yeah, in the U.S. we had a teacher marry her high school partner. They're not popular. It's considered pretty funded up.
I love this song and love seeing it through you two's eyes for the first time. :)
Driven to tears, the next song from the Police you guys should hit
Listening To "Driven To Tears" without listening to "When The World Is Running Down (You Make The Best Of What's Still Around)" also is just shameful, haha. Like "Heartbreaker" and no :Living Loving Maid" with Zeppelin.
Massive hit for the Police back in the day…, takes me back to my High school dayz , awesome song !
HA! Me too...except that was the '80's version.
I rode the buses at college. Our campus was huge and there is a train track that separated east and west campus so it was practically impossible to get from one class to another in time without buses and attendance was taken at the beginning of classes so you couldn't skip or be late. Parking usually took 30 minutes to several hours depending on the time of day and you could only use designated parking lots that were all colorized by the type of parking pass you had. In short, buses were an absolute necessity.
You all know you want them to listen to 'Be My Girl-Sally' next. 😂
Sting, the singer/songwriter in The Police, was an English teacher before he was a rock star, and wrote the song based on his experience of having under-age girls fancying, and in some cases propositioning, himself and other good-looking teachers. As far as we know he resisted the temptation, but he could see how easily someone could fail to. The line about "that book by Nabokov" at the end is referencing an infamous book called Lolita, which is about a middle-aged man having an affair with an under-age girl. That book is the reason why under-age 'femme fatales' have come to be generically called 'Lolitas'.
From one of the greatest albums of all time.
Worth remembering that Gordon Sumner (later known as Sting) who wrote and performed this, was a teacher before he was a rock star.
Love you guys! Great spirits! Peace+
