Chichester Cathedral's bells are an 18cwt ring of eight tuned to the key of Eb. They have an interesting reputation but produce a characterful noise that resonates throughout the town and its surroundings. These bells are hung in the detached tower rather than the main cathedral tower, which is too weak to hold a peal of bells. However, there is a service bell in the main tower, rung by a hammer, for the cathedral's services. The bells in the detached tower were cast by a mix of founders: John Wallis, William III Purdue, William I Eldridge, and most recently, John Taylor and Co. While these bells create a distinctive sound, they are known to be shrill and somewhat out of tune. They handle reasonably well for those accustomed to long draughts, but they do require some getting used to.
The Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, was founded in 1075 when the bishop's seat was moved from Selsey. It boasts fine architecture in both Norman and Gothic styles and has been described by Ian Nairn as "the most typical English Cathedral." Unique among English cathedrals, Chichester features a freestanding detached medieval bell tower and double aisles. Similar detached towers can be found at Chester and St Davids Cathedrals. Chichester Cathedral houses two medieval sculptures and numerous modern artworks, including tapestries, stained glass, and sculptures, many of which were commissioned by Walter Hussey, dean from 1955 to 1977.
