The problem with this day and age is if you don't have "papers" they tend to disregard you until you blow their expectations with some indie production while they don't treat the "educated" similarly. You could spend hours compiling the most kickass showreel with all the best of your works but for it to be considered and viewed, let alone reviewed, takes three heel kicks and a mushroom down a rabbit hole into a labyrinth full of coins and fire-spitting tortoises with spiky shells. Education is truly the key.

Great interview, my professional story is identical to his. I would suggest mastering business as well as cinematography rather than partnering, you will earn a lot more money and have broader opportunities.

Interesting video. I will be working with some university students on their film project and am looking everywhere for information and tips. Currently I'm a published photographer with 7 years experience - the transition is going to be a challenge but fun. Ive always heard if I wanted to learn and get better at lighting, I needed to get with aa film crew. So I am super excited. Heck if this turns into a new career I welcome it. But for now, the experience, the learning and working on a fun project is going to be epic. I wish he did a tutorial on the basics of what he would do in a shoot with some sample videos.Again awesome video.
As a Director of photography and photographer you should have given the person filming this the advice that filming short gives a more flattering look - great video anyways!
Have more than one skill which equivalents more than one source of income.

Being a DP today is not the same thing as it was in the 70's where a DP had to know if a 2 stop underexposure would still expose on 100 ASA film. Today they just look at a monitor. Back then they had to know it.
I would love to intern. I took classes in the film industry in New Mexico. No school here in Albuquerque really trains people in the Director of Photography realm.

yea, if he was he def should be making waaay more. theres guys who do my job that make 110k union and we're 3 levels below a DOP as a rigging electrician.
TIL that top tier DOPs (of which there is only like 10 guys including Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki, etc....) can at best make 25k a week when they are shooting. That is dog sh*t money for the talent and experience they bring to a film! That's like $3500 grand a day at best. I mean, it's obviously still good money (when they are shooting), but what about all the time in between productions?

Why is a video on DP so crappy and boring?
Unfortunately, I don't believe the interviewee made this himself. I'd love seeing his personal work.
This video makes me cringe. This guy is in it for the wrong reasons and has an extremely lazy approach. If your going to do it... do it, buddy.
I can understand why you would say that, but I think you missed his points. He first said that the reason he chose filmmaking over other careers is because he got so excited about the projects he ended up doing them all the time. He also said he works 7 days a week (in 2018), which is far from lazy. He's just approaching all of this in a conservative way, which makes sense, given that his goal is to run a sustainable business. Sure, he could have dedicated his life to trying to make Hollywood blockbusters, but he decided that wasn't worth the risk for him. Finally, he does this partially because he gets to work with his partner. If you ask me he's definitely in it for the right reasons!
@@nickthelen6508 he definitely has a solid plan that's not just being at the top end of Hollywood (many crash and burn going that route not realising that's kind of endgame for commercial DOP's
