- Shakti Samanta almost cancelled shooting the Rajesh Khanna starrer Aradhana movie. The reason being that Shakti Samanta came to know that writer Sachin Bhowmick had written the story of Aradhana movie very similar to another movie that was due for release. Another problem was that Sharmila Tagore wasn't keen to play mother to a grown up Rajesh Khanna. Rajesh Khanna the super star. I had one memory of Rajesh Khanna. My Grandmother was working in Dr Dholkia's hospital. When Rajesh Khanna was admitted in that hospital (hhati mere sathi). She was his nurse and he use to call her maaji.

Sadly most Indians had misunderstood that people of Tamilnadu are anti Hindi. Anti Hindi propaganda was its peak during the release of Aradhana only Hindi speaking people and few Urdu speaking people of T N used to watch Hindi films Aradhana was released in a mini theatre soon it was a resounding hit Tamizhians who had no knowledge of Hindi at all mass and class liked the film especially the songs and it became a super duper hit in whole of Tamilnadu. It ran to housefull shows for more than a year. Aradhana records were all sold out. Hindi lyrics were transliterated in Tamizh and sold like hot cakes. Aradhana songs were a must at wedding receptions and musical shows. The locals who sang the songs could not pronounce Hindi properly and had a heavy accent but sang with passion and were accepted wholeheartedly by the audience. It’s a milestone for Hindi films in TN many Tamizhlilans named their sons as Rajesh or Rajesh Kanna ! Thereafter all Rajesh Khanna films were hits in Tamilnadu. Om Shanti

Aradhana completed it's 100 week run at Little Anand cinema in Madras ( now Chennai ). It was first & last movie which did this miracle in Madras.
p.c.mittal Bobby and yaadon ki Baarat had a long run and were very successful but little Anand being a mini theatre Aradhana had a longer run with packed houses
Unfortunately Rajesh Khanaji got slapped by a college girl (when kakaji.tried to molest a college girl)in madras.

I was born in 1969, same year of aradhana. I was named Rajesh due to this hit movie.

@70mm with Rahoul My mother studied in Mount Carmel college in Bangalore. After Aradhana released, one day nearly 3/4 college was missing. Many students had bunked college to go to the nearby movie theatre. The principal took a college bus and went to the theater. She got the screening stopped. Loaded all students on the bus and took them back to college.

Before Salim Javed, there was another famous story and screenplay writer - Sachin Bhowmick , who did the screenplay of this film. Hrishikesh, J Om Prakash, Shakti Samant were some film makers with whom he worked. Used to write for Bengali magazine, Ultorath, married Kalpana and Pradeep Kumar’s daughter.. wouldn’t it be interesting to make a podcast?
Rajesh Khanna was one of the finest actors of Hindi film industry, my mother worked in Rajesh Khanna's home she saw almost all first screening of Rajesh Khanna with him. Aradhana, Kati patang, Anand etc. No one till today could break his record of 10 back to back super hits....

I remember seeing Aradhana when it was released in 1969 in Delhi. We had seen it in Sheila Theatre (India's first 70 mm cinema) in Pahargunj. I was 13 years old. The vibrant colours, the songs are unforgettable.

How Kishore Kumar involved with Aradhana movie that was also an interesting story. Actually Md.Rafi was only choice as singer of that movie. But he was in the tour that time. Shakti samant was not ready to wait for Rafi sab.He proposed name of Kishore Kumar as singer. But Sachin Dev Burman had doubt about Kishore whether he would sing for another actor or not. He said "Kishore gayega?"But Shakti Samanta replied "agar ap kahenge to fir kiu nahin gayega ".Then they went Kishore Kumar's house. And...rest is the history. ...

Subhashis Ghosh, you are absolutely correct. Actually Sakti Samanta brought in KK. There are lots of misgivings about it. KK was choice of SS. SDB thought that KK's voice would not suit with soft personality of RK. That is why he was not initially ready to accept KK as RK's ghost voice.

Uske Pehle KishoreDa sirf apne liye, AshokDa aur Dev Sahib ke liye hi gaate the. BurmanDa ne already unko chuna tha Kora Kagaz tha ye mann Mera. Perhaps in another video. Actually it was kishore and RD… SD was unwell, so RD handled the recordings.
SD Burman fell sick during the making of this film. Shakti da requested R D to do record songs. S D Burman had recorded few songs with Rafi. R D recorded songs with Kishore! Most people have forgotten this fact. Shakti da roped in R D for his next film Kati Patang which turned out to be a a musical hit

Music & Lyrics played a big role in making Hindi movie a Blockbuster there is no doubt about it..Baiju Bawra became a huge hit..but Actor Bharat Bhushan didn't become a Heartthrob..Rajesh Khanna was a talented Actor..his Acting skills we're outstanding..Anand, Safar..Do Rastha..that's one reason his movies ran for 25 week's..to give 15 Movies hits in 3 yrs it's not possible even in this generation..that's why they called him SUPER STAR..

What a story. Reminds me of a story i've heard long back. May be, you can shed light to this. Kishore Kumar wanted to make a very low budget bangla movie called 'Lukochuri'. The objective was to make a flop to avoid the tax implication of a huge success he had with another film that year. Finally, lukochuri became such a big hit that it superseded the earlier hit by some multitude.
Shakti Samant had two big movies stuck and wanted to make a low budget movie. Ended up making a cult.

I've personally witnessed the phenomenon of changing fate of kishor kumar and him turning into a mega star/super singer after Aradhna.
Those 4 fateful songs of kishor were a highlight of the film and proved a turning point of his singing career. Being
a college student from Pakistan in those days ,had no access to the movie. Had to wait till VCR days to watch it many years later and learn about RK and rest.
But Kishor kumar is another story. My favourite from the biggining and all through the young days.

As per my knowledge firstly Shakti Samat approached Asha parekh for Aradhna. However she refused to work in view of old lady. Due to this ,relation between Shakti samant and Asha ji became strained. which latter on become normmal. I appreciate your style of narrating the episode.

i had met shakti samanta many yrs ago near my house in bandra west during durga puja opp national college grounds he was one of the main organisers and was having a drink with some bengali film folks he was very humble inspite of his huge success and spoke excellent english after that my friends and i invited shaktida for a cultural meet in our college inspite of being busy person he very graciously accepted our invitation and it was great to have him over to our college and he narrated some very entertaining ancedotes from his long and illustrious film career it was a full house at the college auditorioum that day

Before Selecting Rajesh Khanna for this film,two other hero rejected this film,i think they were Devanand & Shashi Kapoor

After its stupendous success in Madras and Tamilnadu the so called anti Hindi Tamizh people recycled the hit tunes of Aradhana for other films. It was also remade in Tamizh and Telugu average success as most moviegoers had watched the original and the remakes were no patch to the original. Roop tera Mastana song was a smash hit in Southern India. Still very popular

Wah Rahoul, I love this story about ARADHANA. I didn’t know all this.I was about to graduate high school and join college. I had other things on my mind.
[I am going to make some edits to bring clarity to my writeup. I wrote it in a rush.]
I loved Rajesh Khanna and became his big fan. I loved ARADHANA especially because of the second half of this movie in which Rajesh Khanna calls Sharmila Tagore “ma” - that didn’t bother me. So what? It’s called acting.
That ARADHANA got made at all despite all the odds stacked against it was a miracle. And what a debut, for Kishore Kumar, who won a Filmfare for “Roop Tera Mastana. That’s poppycock - he should have won it for “Mere Sapnon ki Rani”, but never mind, a Filmfare award is a Filmfare award. It launched the careers of both Rajesh Khanna and Kishore Kumar, and the rest is history.
Rajesh Khanna went on to make, something like sixteen consecutive jubilee hits - does your readership know what a jubilee hit is ? if not, let them google it. That’s an achievement that even Amitabh Bachchan hasn’t achieved. To this day, I don’t know who helped whom, Rajesh Khanna or Kishore Kumar. The two were in a symbiotic relationship and helped each other,
A few trivia facts.
- Sharmila Tagore is reading Alistair McClean’s WHERE EAGLES DARE, a bestseller in India and internationally, and if I am not mistaken, she is holding the book upside down.
- I started reading Gulshan Nanda’s novels in Hindi , to improve my Hindi diction and vocabulary. I missed the Hindustani diction that was the lingua Franca of Hindi Cinema of in my childhood in Bombay, but it was fast being subsumed by the Bambayya Hindi dialect. I managed to read a few of his novels like KATI PATANG and JHEEL KE US PAAR.
- In 1973 I left Bombay and went to IIT Kharagpur and five years later to the US. At Kharagpur I met students from all over India and learnt to be cosmopolitan. That sounds ironic coming from a Bombay boy, .but it is true. Normally , it’s Bombay that should have been the cosmopolitan influence on the Hindi speakers.
- Rajesh Khanna was not a Punjabi jat. He used to read Ayn Rand: I nearly fell off of my chair when I heard Twinkle reveal this in an interview.
- Serendipitously, I saw Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz shooting for AAP KI KASAM (1974) at IIT Bombay where I - a Bombay Iad was submitting my admission forms to IIT Kharagpur. What an irony! I did get admitted to Bombay IIT but opted for Kharagpur. Long story. Bombay would have been a natural choice but Kharagpur made me a man.

I am from south and not much familiar with Hindi. The narration, voice and pronunciation are so clear that I could understand everything. I went all the way to Bangalore to see this film on the very release day. I was a student then.
