- Music Director Naushad got a Filmfare Award for the film Baiju Bawra (1952). This video tells the viewers that why Naushad's Filmfare Award feels wrong. Naushad scored music in Bollywood films from 1940's to 1990's and gave hit musical scores for Mughal E Azam, Mother India, Mere Mehboob etc but won only a single Filmfare Award in his life.

I fell judges were confused which one to choose and which ones to left out for each one is a gem, numbers which have stood the test of time. Earlier composers, singers and lyrists were very aware of the raags so much so that the end result turned out to be masterpieces. Even after 50/55 years songs still brings a kind of tranquality to the listener. But yes only for those who have a taste for melody.

Look Rahoul. The entire system of selecting best MD in the forum of Filmfare is idiosyncratic, even today. In fact, Filmfare award, particularly in case of best MD can be purchased. Heard from noted santoor mastreo late Shiv Kumar Sharmaji who revealed that on being honoured as best MD for film "Abhiman", S D Burman was called over phone by late Shankarji to congratulate him. S D Burman smiled and replied "Ha mila hai. Lekin paisa nahi dena para. Genuinely mila hai". Do you think album "Suraj" deserved FF award above "Guide"? Also I am shocked to learn A R Rahman has been awarded FF award maximum time! In 1971, similar incident happened. S-J was awarded best MD for film "Be-Iman, where HRHK & AP both by Panchamda were deprived. Potential of Panchamda was recognised only on 1982/83. Can you imagine! Before to that L-P was handed over the baton by S-J. 😡
This cheating & lobby business is decade old in Bollywood & in FF as well. That's why Indian music is losing it's glory.
All songs are praiseworthy in film "Baiju Bawra" and every song is a gem, but as FF authority had limited visionary, they changed the category after 2/3 years. That might be also on someone's vested interest, who knows! 🙄
The incident you quoted about Be-imaan is true. Pran Saheb even protested this injustice and favouritism by refusing his FF award that year as Pakeeza was sidelined for Be-imaan by FF award team. Shankar Jaikishan were undoubtedly number one and ruled the roost from 1949( Barsaat) to 1971(Mera Naam Joker), they must have avoided such cheap tactics of purchasing the award. They were all in one package music directors, I mean had qualities of Naushad, S D Burman and O P Nayyar. By music of Basant Bahar and Amrapali, they proved that they are no less than Naushad as far as classical music is concerned. Be-imaan to some extent , I can understand as Shankar was desperate to keep their number one title after demise of Jaikishan but there was absolutely no need of doing that at the time of Sooraj as they were at their prime at that time.

Agreed!!! Naushad ji should have been awarded for whole album. My most fav song was "Mann tadpat Hari darshan" however I love each and every song of Baiju Bawra.

Look at the devotion with which Mohammed Rafi sahab sang Mann Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj and how Naushad sahab directs the entire crew as well as Rafi sahab. This is something unseen and unheard in the history of Music, not only film music.

Yes the award should have been given to the music for the whole film Baiju Bawra. There were many songs greater than Tu Ganga ki Mauj. The greatest irony was that no male/female singer award was also given in those days. These awards are meaningless and do not convey the liking of the people. Manna Dey saab was a good singer and hasbeen awarded with Dada Saheb Phalke award, while more popular Rafi saab got only a Padmashri. OP Nayyar also got Filmfare award only once. True recognition comes from the audience. While Naushad saab did less number of films, below 80 films his carrier spanning six decades and Bappi Lahiri RD Burman Anu Mallic etc did many hundred of films, the limited number of Naushad songs stand on their quality.😂

Naushad made a 5 part docu series on Music Directors for DD in the 1980s - one episode for one MD. S-J was not among the 5 even though they were clearly among the Top 3 from 1949 to 1971. When asked the reason for this glaring omission, Naushad's response was 'Oh, I completely forgot about them'! This was disclosed by Raju Bharathan.

I totally agree with you Rahoul about the choice of song but that is because of the jury's choice. On the other hand, Naushad's score for all the songs of Baiju Bawra was divine. He deserved the award in any case. I would have tossed between 'O Duniya ke Rakhewaye' ' (Darbari) Man Tarpat Hari Darshan ko Aaj' (Malkaus) and 'Mohe Bhool gaye Swareya' (Bharirav or BhairoN as we say in Punjabi).

Haha, when you remember Ilayaraja who got some foreign acclamation because of advanced information system and globalisation, you should have done some research about his many predecessors of the south like S Rajeswara rao, Pendyala, R Sudarshanam & R Goverdhanam, Viswanatham &Rammurthy, Rajan & Nagendra and the most famous singer cum musician, Ghantasala and many more. Surely there must be some more from the corners of this big nation. So, better you restrict yourself to only Hindi. Even in filmy classical singing, there was no match for Ghantasala in entire India.

Govt of India also ignored him for a long time .. At last, Naushad was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1982, and the Padma Bhushan in 1992.
Beautiful album of Baiju bawra should be recognised, my husband who is 74 years now, remembers those songs and is full of praise 👏

यह गीत जब मैने सुना और टी वी पर देखा तो मेरे मनमे एक बहुत ही बडी गलतफहमी निर्माण हुई वह यह है कि इस गीत के लिए नौशाद साहब को जरुर फिल्मफेअर अवार्ड मिला होगा।
मैने "बैजु बावरा "फिल्म देखी नही है पर केवल इस फिल्म के एक दो गीत टी वी पर देखे है क्यूँ की यह फिल्म बहुत ही पुराने समय की है।
आपका विश्लेषण आज देखा तो बहुत ही शाॅक्ड हुआ की इस गीत के लिए नही बल्की अन्य गीत के लिए अवार्ड दिया था।
मुझे इस प्रकार लगा की जैसे पुराने जमाने मे (तब टेक्नॉलॉजी आज के जैसी प्रगत नही थी और टी वी अंपायर नही रहते थे) जब क्रिकेट मॅच मे कोई बाॅलर के द्वारा किसी बल्लेबाज को आऊट करने के तुरन्त अंपायर ने नो बाॅल करार देने के समय जिस तरह सभी दर्शक शाॅक्ड होते थे ठिक उसी तरह लगा।
मेरी नजर से तो रफी साहब की मधुर आवाज में होनेवाला "मन तरपत हरी दर्शन को आज "
यह गीत ही अवार्ड विजेता गीत है।

SJ did not deserve the 5 awards that they got.
I think that the jury at Filmfare were under some pressure to give recognition to Naushsad Sahab..whi till then had not earned a filmfare despite a decade into the music industry in bollywood.
Giving award for only one song of a movie sounds a bit weird...but Filmfare conrinued thus practise for 2 years before felicitating Hemant Kumar for the entire album in the year 1956.

Absolutely you are right award must be given for whole album, later they corrected it, by the war Filmfare awards were not appropriate lot of awards given to not fully deserved personal actual deserved personality totally ignored.

S,d.burman,salil chowdhury,madan mohan ko aur bhi milna chahiye tha. Sabse badi unfair huya hain pancham dada ke saath. 70' s me keya keya na dhoon unhone banaya ! Lekin koi award nahi paye !!! Hamare desh me lagbhag had awards distribution aise hi controversy bar bar paida kiye hain.
Awards have been missing for Burman da for Guide. Ghulam Mohammed for Pakeezah.
At the starting of the video were mentioning all the songs from Baiju Bawra and in that I couldn't see Man Tarpat! I was like how can you forget that...

अवार्ड कैसे मिलते थे, यह किसी से छिपा नहीं है। वैसे भी नौशाद को अवार्ड की जरूरत नहीं थी क्योंकि असली अवार्ड जनता उनकी फिल्में बार बार देख कर व गानों के रेकार्ड्स, कैसेट खरीद कर दे देती थी। आज भी जनता उनके गाने सुन सुन कर वो विडियो देखकर दे रही है और वर्षों देती रहेगी ।
सच हैं "बैजु बावरा"पुरे चित्रपट के संगीत को filmfare अवॉर्ड मीलना चाहीये था
