    After a couple of years of focusing on 1000s, the 2021 Polaris Sportsman 450 is a refreshing reminder that you don't have to spend $10,000 plus to buy a capable 4x4 ATV for work or trail riding. Looking forward to your feedback.

      I bought a 99 Sportsman 500 when they were new. Best machine I every owned. Later I bought a 700 .. way too big. I'm really considering this 450. I never said to myself when I had the 500, man I wish this were bigger or had more power.

    Great review, a friend bought one after riding one of my ATV'S, he now practically lives on it and rarely takes his truck going around town. I took him on a 6hr ride that had every terrain except sand. It handled it all. The deep mud required some work but she went. But that was stock tires and deep mud, so I was impressed.

      Great to hear that you've got a new Rider interested in the sport and that they're enjoying their Sportsman. Unfortunately a lot of writers think you have to have a huge engine to have a capable ATV. Just not true. Sounds like your friend got a great ATV with money left over.

But from my POV I look at it as what ever is more practical for ur needs. We need a 450 class shoot out with the sportsman 450, outlander 450, kodiak 450 and alterra 450

    • @dcsales2007
      @dcsales2007 6 місяців тому +1

      that wouldn't be fair, as the sportsman is a 499cc engine, the outlander 450 is dead now, so the new 500 would take its place, but that's really a detuned 650cc FFS. There's` the CFmoto that actually has a 500 sticker on the side of the body work that's really a 495cc, there's the rubicon 520 that's actually a 518cc, the Kodiak 450 is only a 421cc engine, so that's not really fair. Arctic Crap only has a 600 which is actually 600cc... hallelujah! so they are out. Kawasaki only has a 300 small quad and a big bore 750 twin... so they are out. The King Quad 500 has a 493cc engine, so that'll work.
      As you can see, there are alot of variables which would make this "shootout" you want to see as unfair.... for example, the sportsman has two different suspensions, the honda has two different suspensions and transmissions. Some models have 25" tires and some have 26". Some offer no EPS options, some brands only have EPS.
      Comparing what? power? price? ride? handling? looks? options? where do you start? just look at msrp's and pick all models as close to the same MSRP's as you can get? even then they won't be equal. If one quad is cheaper than the rest, but is only slightly compromised in rankings, do it become the best due to cost? will the end results be like all the others we've seen already..."if you can afford it, go with the upgraded model because of xyz"

    Recently got to drive a 2022 model, and can say I actually was blown away. Maybe it was because I had such low expectations prior, but dam for under 7 k that's a hell of a ride. I thought the power on ,50 inch trails was great, smooth but torquey. Handling was fantastic and smooth. Was nice having a gas sipper that I didn't have to throw a bunch of roto pax fuel caddy's on them to make it back.

    I still wish sport quads would come back. I’ve considered quitting the ATV industry because there is no significant sport quads anymore except the YFZ and the Raptor, which there are rumors that they are going to stop production too. Man, even if they used 2-stroke dirt bike engines that are still in the market, just bring SOMETHING back for us sport riders. I think it would be sick if Honda came back with a CR250 powered TRX250R in a TRX450R frame. Yamaha can bring back the blaster and build a YZ250 powered Quad using a YFZ450 chassis to compete with Honda, KTM can even take their quad chassis and stuff some of their 2-stroke engines in them. 2-strokes are cheaper to build, cheaper to mass produce, and if they charged close to what the 450’s used to cost I can almost guarantee the sport quad industry would EXPLODE. Sales went down because of the recession, I get it, but the economy is bouncing back, and with Covid people are flocking to the off road industry because it’s more of an individual sport.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  3 роки тому +2

      We agree with pretty much everything you are saying but emissions standards in California just killed at the yfz450r in that state. The LTR 450 was basically killed by Massive fines from the federal government dealing with EPA restrictions. If we see a sport quad come back it will almost definitely not be 2 stroke. It will be Electric. Too much government power.

    I own 570 2021, I would rather buy 570 than 450, I bought non eps, it was much better deal and less electronics means less problems, I must say that I don't miss EPS. I like the machine, rides great, but I disapointed about missing winch plate, rear storage box, axle guards, terminal block for winch and addons, better protection of some components and some wiring should be re routed. Also seat is poorly mounted and latch is missing, they put space for switches that are not standard and cost 40 for a 3 dollar switch. I have full led package, they look amazing, but on front lights are not as great as I would expect from leds, I must re allign it and check. Id love to have some type off a lock, for not stealing it. It is also running a bit hot, I'm not used to that on other machines and bikes, fan is on a lot. It rides nice, but it is far from being a great package.

    Looking for a new quad, considering a renegade 850-1000 XXC. I have tons of riding experience, but on smaller quads and dirtbikes (fourtrax 350, vinson 500 etc), Also have power experience on streetbikes (600cc-1000cc R series bikes) Is the power on the rene tractable (meaning easy to get used to and friendly) or is it a bull in a china shop?

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  3 роки тому +2

      Considering you have quite a bit of a TV experience combined with experience on some larger displacement street bikes, you should get along fine with the Renegade as long as you just take a little time to get used to the machine. With a CVT, tractable power isn't quite as much of a factor because the transmission tries to keep the engine in the best part of the powerband. That being said, there is a ton of horsepower off idle and on throughout the RPM range. Accelerating off the line, it will rat trap you if you set up and give it full throttle. Experience and throttle control should be mandatory before writing this machine and it sounds like you have both. Hope this helps, and if you have any other questions don't hesitate to hit us back.

    I hate to say it but the sportsman line has taken a big turn for the worse after about 2015...too many deign flaws and cheeped out components cause too many reliability issues. I was a big sportsman fan and have owned many generations going back to the 90's and they aren't what they used to be. ADC is NOT A FEATURE! EBS is way too strong and way too much rear brake bias can cause issues for newer riders on slick or steep hills when brakes are applied on top of EBS. 4 wheel engine braking or ADC as they call it is a "Feature" which is a load of crap. The auto 4wd system does work good yes but it unlocks on decel causing the rear tires to lockup which is further made worse by single lever brakes having too much rear bias. Your rear tires lockup then lockup even harder when your sideways and trying to stop causing a potential roll over situation. Engine and tune wise the 450 idle isn't bad but the 570's tend to be hard starting and have idle issues on alot of there units due to programming and cam profile rather then battery size. There's some more I can go on about but polaris has some serious safety concerns in some areas of the sportsman. That said the GOOD things are the steering in both power and non power units, suspension design, shock valving and soft springs give a good controlled ride but lack trail feel which maybe missed for some people but makes for a good trail experience. The 450 and 570 engines are the same block and rotating assembly with the 570 getting a 4 valve head, more cam profile, and a .030" overbore and piston to accommodate the head change. Whats interesting is you can buy a 450 and tune it and be within 1-3hp (year dependent) of the 570 but get better trail MPG, less heat and a smoother idle. Ive got alot of input on the sportsman....some good and some bad things including there front diff issues....

      @@tittledieselperformancellc interesting you mention that , I beleive I have witnessed that very thing , following a Polaris larger one believe 800 had all the bells and whistles, down very steep downhill , on a hatfield McCoy trail, back then I was on my trusty raptor 660 heavily set up for those trails , and half way down suddenly his rear wheels start chattering and he rapidly began to get out of control , luckily he was a sport quad rider normally and he got under control, scary to watch such a heavy machine rapidly descending like that , raptor being lighter and of course gears, clutch ,goodbrakes ,etc. Downhills are no big deal.

    • @tittledieselperformancellc
      @tittledieselperformancellc 3 роки тому

      @@ATVonDemand I can agree with that for the most part. The issue is when the beginners start riding hills and slick surfaces and let off the throttle locking up the rear end which can come around on you (on a steep hill) and catch a rock or root and flip posing a safety hazard. If polaris got there crap together and just allowed 4wd engine braking as standard which it should be then Id recommend it as well. The 450 you had for example is fine but the 570 EBS models is where the issue comes in. Mine nearly killed me and I was a pro rider for many years on a sheet of icy/snow on a cliff side. I just barely managed by applying throttle at the same time to keep the rear tires power applied and using the 4 wheel brake to even out the bias enough to save the bike and push away from the cliff the bike wanted to go towards. I do like polaris, I love the ride, I love the seat and ergo, the power per CC is great, parts are plentiful and storage is great....but as a mountain rider that flaw was my main concern. Maybe some day you can get a EBS model though I think 2019 it was reduced with a secondary helix change....not positive though. If you come across a 2017 570, take it for a ride on a slick hill with some off camber area and youll see the back end skid and step out on you. The drive by wire models also wont allow gas and brake for more then X amount of seconds before it cuts the throttle and gives a check engine code which is a bit of an issue as well.

    • @tittledieselperformancellc
      @tittledieselperformancellc 3 роки тому +1

      @@Hutch_moto Exactly my point, you "demand" 4wd (as per their marketing) but the computer/mechanism releases 4wd when you let off the throttle. That in itself is not 4wd. You also cant park in 4wd either, Ive watched many many people try to get off on a hill just to watch the bike slide away in park (no mechanical brake applied on the handlebar) which caused the bike to hit a tree. That can also be a problem during transport as most people don't tie down their machines properly either, since all 4 wheels don't lock if the rear end hops on the trailer from bumps and pot holes in the road it can cause the bike to shift, on flatbed trailers it can come off the edge completely. Part of this is a computer related program but there is a small mechanism in the diff that works in part for the engine brake system called ADC. But regardless this is the only brand to have this type of thing happen and it poses a hazard in alot of situations since its not actually "on demand" by over riding the operator.
      Glad your friend was able to handle it, I watched many people wreck at hatfield and nearly all of them were on down hills with a polaris that didn't have ADC. Id love to have a little chat with the people at Polaris about some of their engineering....
