@@donalain69 They actually didn’t, as several times demonstrated throughout the Cold War, both sides were paranoid and frantic and were at many points ready to launch Nukes. If America knew the Soviets weren’t interested in a nuclear war you’d think the Cold War wouldn’t have been as scary and the Cuban Missile Crisis would probably never have happened.
God gave us a other chance but we ain’t doin nothin so his work will be in a waste

I think Edward Snowden needs to release more classified files on the inner workings of the US Government.
He isn’t really hated, I mean of course the country he betrayed would hate him but the rest of the world sees him as a hero.

@Дамиан Балабанов [Damian Balabanov] Besides, I get that the Average Russian lived a better life during the Union, but the Union did horrible things to Eastern Europe and Central Asia and it still tries to do it to central Asia. I grew up in India so I wasn’t constantly fed propaganda like a Russian citizen like you or an American patriot but I can tell by my own research of histroy that the fall of the Union was a good thing.

To be very honest, it takes a lot for someone to overcome their biased views, especially when they were brought up in such a way. This man is a legend, the CIA could have killed him given there was a doubleagent within their ranks.

Fun fact: Oleg betrayed his country and did some serious damage, a nuclear war would have started if he wasn't a double agent.
He was also the bureau chief in London. Oleg was sentenced to death after that, but was not executed.
A movie was created about him called " The Collapse Of Communism: The Untold Story".

Conveniently, I happened to recently read the book "The Spy and the Traitor", a book about Gordievsky. I recommend reading the book.
Yeah I read it about a year ago a fantastic book about an incredible man. I can't believe they haven't made it into a film yet.
Both the USA and the USSR wanted to avoid an actual war, yes, but make no mistake: Both sides had plans...multiple sets of plans...for attacking each other with a first strike.

That was oleg penkovski while this is oleg gordievsky. Did you not watch the ending? He was executed for betraying the soviet union in the 1960s . This guy is still alive.

Able Archer was just a bad idea from the get go. Cold War tensions were at their height during this time and the USSR had no idea whether the war games were a prelude to war or not. Yuri Andropov was very influential and he had stated that "all of the information that the KGB had obtained up until then had pointed to the "innocent" military exercise being an planned NATO first strike initiative.

One thing I always wondered about was, from the1950's into the 1980's both both the Americans and Soviets were afraid of a nuclear war starting (but both would not admit it) and neither side wanted to show fear. The point is why could both the Soviets and USA not make a more simple agreement of 'No first strike' which would have been the beginning of a more stable situation.
Because both couldn't give up their pride and show any hints of vulnerability.

Can we respect that whoever got this information had to probably had to be a spy themselves.
My dad was good friends with an ex kgb agent who's now passed away, but I remember him saying one time, that as afraid as the U.S. is of Russia trying to nuke us, Russia is at least 5x more afraid of us doing it to them.
@Yo God my dad writes insurance for a lot of government agencies and other major corporations. Another one of his good friends, is the guy who owns the Pete's gas station company, Gratz Peters. He also attends the Republican senators prayer meetings upon invitation, my dad has quite a few friends inside of the government. You don't have to believe me, but I feel that I should provide more context to assuage any doubt of my posts authenticity.
@Yo God I guess "good friends" is a bit of an overstatement, but they knew eachother as acquaintances at public affairs, which I personally attended on one occasion when they invited him to have his family join them for dinner in Topeka. My dad did talk to him quite a few times, though.
