  • Oriki is a brief genre that the Yoruba typically use to inspire themselves. It is often in poetic form and consists of songs of praise. Oriki is also used as a means of identifying the different clans of Yoruba, to understand people’s lineages and pedigrees and for persuasion which is one of its basic uses.
In the form of persuasion, it is like a compassionate force that subconsciously exerts stimulating vigour upon persons targeted, it captivates the targeted person with sudden energy which is capable of influencing their decisions and can make them act extraordinarily, more of a supernatural effect. It ascribes to the act of stimulating ability upon the intellect or emotions of a person. Yoruba Musicians will ensure you empty your pocket once they get hold of your Oriki
More of the reasons Yoruba are quick to sing someone’s Oriki in order to persuade them to do something.

Very Powerful 😊 it has such great impact even when watching the video. Does the Oriki have a similar significance as the griots in Senegal? Thank you for sharing

Oríkì is slightly different from griots. Oriki is cultural thing associated with the Yoruba culture. The word 'Oriki" can be translated as panegyric which is a form of praise poetry. In the Yoruba culture, each settlement or minor tribe has its own Oriki. Each household within a tribe or settlement has it own Oriki. Even each individual has his/her own Oriki.
The name usually carries a praise poetry with it which is used to inspire the bearer of the name. The name and the praise poetry associated with the name varies in length depending on whether the name was given to a child to as a recital of the accomplishment of his/her family line or to describe his/her future destiny. The name is also given to praise a child for the pride they bring to the family or to describe and summon particular character traits that they believe a child was born with.
