  • I hope you enjoy! heres my remastered copies. I have four other cassettes of this stuff, but heres some of the ones already passed around. Not sure if I want to release any more of these right now. I guess maybe this is Vol. 1 since most of these songs are already out there, but I bet none of the ones you find sound this good :) enjoy!
I do not own the copyrights on any of this material! All copyrights belong to the Linkous family. All use of these songs are completely for educational and entertainment purposes only!!!

Most if this was recorded in my basement. I'm braking bottles, shooting off fireworks and vacuuming on Break My Mind. At that point the band was called Johnson Family. It was Mark and his brother Matt with Steve Schick and Chip Jones from Honor Role. After Matt left the band they were a three piece and changed the name to Salt Chunk Mary. So technically, most of this (if not all) is Johnson Family...if anyone cares.

This info should be on wikipedia. Very helpful, gives depth to Mark and the other musician’s careers.

@@robertcataldo I've never seen this period mentioned in anything written about Mark. By design, I guess. Mark sort of created his own mythos. It was as if he disappeared into the Virginia wilderness after Dancing Hoods broke up and emerged with Sparklehorse fully formed. But there was this glorious period when I got to see this band play and record. I loved them from day one. I still have the old hand-made Maxell demo in my desk drawer. Nothing to play it anymore, but I'd never part with it.

@@marktrinko8082 this is era fascinating to me. Did they play out, tour etc.? I definitely got the impression that Mark was pretty careful in curating the Sparklehorse image/mythos.

@@robertcataldo They played around Richmond some. I don't recall any out-of-town shows. But there might have been some. Chip, the bass player, was a housemate. So I probably went to every show. They were all in smaller places. One show was at a place called Main Street Grill. David Lowery joined them to play a few new songs that would end up on the first Cracker album. It was a good time to be in Richmond.

Hey, terrific upload! Can you post the other tapes? I would be willing to buy a copy off of you or whatever it takes. I live in Marks old Farmhouse and am trying to see as much of his work preserved as I can. Would love to see hard copies of this.

This is absolutely incredible man! I'd love to hear the story of how you acquired these tapes - they are somewhat shrouded in mystery. Either way, huge fan of what you've done here and if you have more I highly recommend you post the rest! You may be the only person on UA-cam (or even the world) with that many SCM tapes, the power is in your hands - make some history brother!

@@thebourbonscene845 such good news to hear! I'll make it a point to check back every couple days - looking forward to your gems. I've been a huge Linkous fan for about 15 years now. He is in my top 5 for sure. Sad to think his estate will most likely never put out any thing else by him. I've even read he had an album 80% complete. There's most likely hours and hours of sparklehorse demos in the vault. Luckily these salt chunk Mary demos exist to hold me and others over.
