Around 3:40 you're talking about the flow state; the zone. The best players are able to go there more often and also stay there for the longest duration. THAT is a human trait that can't be as easily leveled up as a technical skill. I think this goes for most people at the top of the heap, almost regardless of which sport 🙂 The ability to focus for an extended period is more innate to some humans than others. Ronnie is a prime example of that, but he is not unparalleled by any stretch of the imagination. But as far as his technique goes, he IS unparalleled IMO. Take care, Buddy!
He's a quick sighter of the ball, so he's never rushed. He looks fast to us, but to him it's in slow motion. A rare talent to be sure. & there's a lot of talented younger snooker players who can play quick like him, but it's forced, which is why they can't intensify their concentration under pressure the way that Ronnie does. With Ronnie, his speed is completely natural. This video is actually 27 years old. He won his 7th world title a couple of years ago at 46 years of age - & he won yet another major title this year at the age of 48. I wouldn't be surprised if he's still be winning titles when he's in his 50s. The guy is a freak. It's a shame the US doesn't play this game. Maybe some enterprising guy will open a snooker hall over there to get the ball (pun intended) rolling..
So glad you are reacting to snooker. I am a complete snooker nut, loved the game for 20 years. A 147 is always special every time they are made, which is fairly rare. Snooker is a very calm game, very therapeutic, but on a button can put you on the edge of your seat. You should look at the 1985 world snooker final. The final frame. One of the most watched sporting moments on British tv.
The scariest thing is there has been only 13 147's at the crucible World championship. It's on its 48th year. This happened 27 years ago and really it will never be beaten. Probably the most incredible skillful 5 minutes of sport ever.
It's nice to see more Americans reacting to snooker. But I wish they'd learn the basics of the game beforehand. Because a lot are reacting to this clip, but if you don't know the game you can't fully appreciate how amazing this is. And I say that as a relatively recent American convert, it doesn't take long to get the basics.
we play pool in the uk too, its just an arcade thing, or sometimes you'll set up the snooker table for pool. A snooker table is much larger though. In snooker watch the white balls its just as important and 'potting the ball' (thats what its called btw) because you need to move it to set you up for your next shot, you plan multiple shots ahead sometimes. At 5:35 in the video watch how he screws the white to break up the reds. Darts is another massive sport like snooker than americans dont really know about.
@@NAIATHEDRAGON You should!! Get into this game, and I guarantee your pool will improve immeasurably. As the writer of the original message says, one thing notably different to pool is the almost magical cue-ball control these pros have in combination with near perfect potting techniques. They generally have the table and ball positions mapped out in their heads, several shots in advance. Apply that concept to pool, and no-one will touch you..
When you spot a snooker player glancing up he is simply looking at the score board. By the way Ronnie did a TV show were he toured the American pool halls and played the top pool players and hustlers at pool, i don't remember the name of the show but it was quite interesting.
I watched that as well, Ronnie lost to the best American pool players and rightly so as it's a different game. If snooker players play pool players they will probably lose, but they will win some and come close. The difference is, is if American pool players try snooker and play snooker players, they won't come anywhere near close, they will be destroyed due to the bigger tables, smaller balls, smaller pockets and much harder game. They won't be able to build a break. Pool players still beat snooker players at the game not due to potting skill or position, it's to do with order of potting during the game and the strategy. Hendry covered it on his Cue tips channel with a few pro pool players
Ronnie literally said in an interview that he was scared as he was going for the 147 so he went as fast as he could to override his mental insecurities Amazing talent the greatest to ever hold a cue
What's completely insane in this is how far ahead he has to think. When he starts the break there are 6 'pottable' reds. That's 6 points. Add to that 6 blacks, 42 more points. Which means he's leaving 99 points on the table at that point. So he knew, from the first shot, to win in a single visit that his 13th shot needed to go into the cluster of reds and split them. Every approach and pick off leads to this moment, where he's in almost the exact position to be able to do this. It's insane.
Snooker tables are massive, much bigger than they look on screen. There are even special extension tools which the players sometimes need to reach difficult balls at a distance. Which makes what Ronnie did so impressive.
One thing you might notice is that when we swerved the ball into the reds to break the cluster, the applause was very brief and hesitant. I think many in the crowd were not convinced he had left himself a good shot
In the most basic description a snooker match is made up of games known as ‘frames’. Each frame begins with what are referred to as ‘the colours’ or coloured balls these are the Yellow, Green, Brown, Blue, Pink and Black. It also starts with 15 red balls. The premise is simple, score more points than your opponent. Each sustained period of point scoring is called a break, while there are red balls on the table a break HAS TO start with a red ball (worth 1 point) immediately followed by one of ‘the colours’ which are all worth a different amount of points. The ideal break would be red ball followed by black ball as the black is with the most points (7), Pink 6, Blue 5, Brown 4, Green 3 and Yellow 2. Once all reds have been downed we’re left with just ‘the colours’ which have to be potted in strict value order, lowest to highest (yellow, followed by green and so on), however, if you’ve reached a point in the frame where you are leading your opponent by more points THAN ARE LEFT then the colours don’t have to be downed (potted) to finish a frame. In the case of a maximum break there are 15 reds in the table (so that’s 15 points) which you then have to follow by 15 blacks (15x7= 105 points) followed by all the ‘colours’ which have a combined value of 27 points, add that altogether and you get 147!! The game is way more complicated than that though, far more tactical than you might think. Apart from trying to outscore your opponent a big part of the game is tactical ‘safety’ or what you might call defensive play where rather than potting balls to score points you try and stop your opponent getting an opportuniy. The ultimate defensive or safety shot is actually called a ‘snooker’ where you’ve placed the cue ball behind another ball blocking your opponent’s path to an object ball. This presents your opponent with several problems, first he has to find a path from behind the ball that has him snookered (this will very often involving him sending the cue ball around the table by bouncing off the side cushion in the hope of striking a red, if only the colours are left then he has to strike whichever lowest value colour is left. For example if you are snookered and only the green, brown, blue, pink and black balls remain your object ball will be the green. If you do ‘escape’ from a snooker and don’t get penalised for either missing the object ball or hitting one of the others the other challenge is not leaving your opponent an opportunity to start scoring again. There are so many variables in a frame of snooker besides just downing or potting balls to earn points. Massive amounts of various skills and tactics and MENTAL strength required. The likes of Ronnie though on occasion make it look RIDICULOUSLY easy 😊
A point about what you said about practise focus and calm with composure. I' m sure that I have read somewhere that Ronnie O'Sullivan has had to work hard for that composure having gone through bad patches and has used meditation techniques to improve his game.
When you say they don't think to much, they think 3 or 4 shots ahead. It's the chess of cue sports on a much much bigger table and tiny pockets. It's all geometry and skill. One of the hardest games/sports skillwise there is. Ronnie can do it with both hands as well. He's an absolute machine. There's one video of him potting just a red and a black and he asks what is the prize for a 147, he knew he could make the highest score after 2 shots in a game when there is no margin for error. Crazy skills Good to see people from across the pond taking notice, I'm a pool player and I'm one of the best in my little area but when it comes to snooker I'm hopeless the table is just so fucking big. If you ever get the chance to just have a short game on one you'll realise just how astronomically hard it is to be even half as good as there guys. Nice reaction
Yeah?? Is that right?? I strongly disagree 🙂 But I DO see what you mean though. You rarely see a snooker table in a bar. I have been competing in pool at the highest level here in Norway and have also played on the Eurotour, so I just HAD to object a little. Pool at its highest level is just as precise and refined as Snooker IMO. Btw, I watched this frame live back in the days 🙂
I'm not sure I agree and I'm an absolute snooker addict! Cue ball control is even more critical in pool given the size of the table you're working with and the density of so many balls on such a small playing area. It's even more complex when only half the balls on the table are playable (the others being your opponents). Pool is also about being able to read the patterns after the break-off which, as a snooker player, I really do struggle with. Having said that, there's nothing more satisfying than taking on a "long-pot" on a pool table. Piece of cake for a snooker player, and always wows the pool players 😉
When the game starts by smashing the balls , it's a game of chance not strategies, beside after playing snooker a pool table feels like a postage stamp in a child's bedroom. Yes I'm sure there's pool tournaments but it's just a bar game, although darts is a sport 😆
I love you brother, we should all uncompromisingly love each other. .. .. .. .. Keep saying snucker and I'll burn your house down. To put it in perspective it's a bowler doing ten matches in a row 9:14
Ronnie confirmed what you were saying about losing concentration when you approach a moment like this. He said he was terrified, and he knew he had to keep the flow going. The chalk fell out of his pocket during the final blue or pink, and he didn't stop to pick it up. He had to keep going. That's what he was signalling for afterwards: "Can someone get me another chalk, please?" :-)
If you play pool then you see a snooker table, you think oh my god wtf. It's only behind Golf as the hardest technical game out there. It is ridiculously difficult. What Ronnie does here is Pele, LeBRON, Messi, Ali levels of skill and in 5 minutes.
It's all very well being able to pocket balls, but the real secret is controlling the cue ball. The tip of a snooker cue is much thinner and rounder than a pool cue. This gives one the ability to put more back spin, top spin and side spin on the cue ball. A snooker table is 12 feet x 6 feet. If you get the chance to see a full size snooker table you'll be shocked at how massive it is. Think about like this......if a 6' guy laid on the table he would only be half the length of the table.✌️❤️🇬🇧
Snooker is soooooo much more difficult than pool. I've played both and owned my own cues for each one. Once you can even be average at snooker, you'll do well at pool. Captained a pool team in the Philippines, we wouldn't have stood a chance at Snooker in the UK!
