True that...especially with the Bobby Lopez connection. BUT the cultural phenomenon and influence the "The Producers" had on Broadway a few years earlier can't be overlooked either
The preview I saw of Wicked in San Francisco before it went to Broadway in a small theatre after it got moved out of The Orphium was STILL better than Avenue Q.
As a younger theatre kid in 2004, I was so pissed that Wicked didn’t win. But now as an adult- this is the way things were meant to turn out. Wicked didn’t need the Tony win. It was (and is) a juggernaut that was able to survive on its own power. Avenue Q, which is just as good of a show, would likely have had to end its run cruelly early without the win. What can be agreed on is that both shows are wonderful, though to different audiences.
Agreed. Overall, Avenue Q is a better show. It's relatable and every single song is brilliant. Wicked just has some bigger moments. But it's a shame they weren't a year apart so they both could have won Best Musical.
I know everyone’s focusing on the Avenue Q vs Wicked debate but.... can we just give a hand to Jackman for being so professional and awesome after his show lost. He’s pretty awesome isn’t he..... also Avenue Q is much more interesting and better written than Wicked.
Well in 2017 great comet lost to dear Evan Hansen despite being the front runner (nominated for more Tony’s) i personally like great comet more but that’s just my opinion. Then there was 2014 when a gentleman’s Guide won over Aladdin. Which is a shock because Disney lol. But I love and prefer gents guide anyway.
As someone who has seen both Wicked & AQ (and loved them both) AQ really does deserve that award, it really sticks with you more (for some people) and it really had a meaningful message
I read the South Park guys did Book of Mormon after they watched Avenue Q. And once they met Robert Lopez, he told them he made Avenue Q inspired in part for the South Park movie!
I just saw Avenue Q (In Perú's adaption) and I loved ittt, then i am just watching every single version of avenue q 😭😭😭 this makes me so happy, i think it's my comfort musical now...
Ah, Wicked. A truly wonderful musical unfortunately saddled with ugly choreography, an unappealing set, a humdrum protagonist outshone by the deuteragonist, drab costumes, uneven plot, and Boq.
@@singer34109Into the Woods, one of the most magical and powerful musicals of all time, is no longer running on Broadway. But, the Lion King is - which, in no means is it necessarily a BAD story, but it surely doesn’t beat Into The Woods, or many other shows who have left Broadway. Just because something is on Broadway doesn’t mean it’s “better” than any other show. Avenue Q was a staple of its time, and it’s creativity, purposefulness, comedy and genius in portraying reality through a comedic parody allowed it to win. Wicked is still a great show though!
To answer your question 1. Tony voters lean towards more original works 2. They also lean towards newer composers. In 2003 Stephen Schwartz had already been a famous composer for many years the tony voters wanted to bring more attention to Bobby Lopez
A few reasons: 1) WICKED actually got very mixed reviews when it opened, and as the Tonys arrived, there was an impression (I think) that WICKED was only the front-runner because it was a huge hit, and not because it was actually deserving. But the big reason was: 2) The producers of AVENUE Q decided to pull a *big* campaign for the Tony: it was styled like a political campaign (to parody the Bush/Kerry Presidential race that year), with the show giving out buttons and CDs and everything, all based around a simple slogan: "Vote Your Heart". In other words: Vote your heart, not your pocketbooks. They even wrote a new song for the campaign, "Rod's Dilemma", which you can find on UA-cam (the upload is called "Vote Your Heart"). They played the David to WICKED's Goliath, and they were extremely charming about it. (pause) Also, in order to win votes from people who produce shows on the road (one of the most important Tony voter blocks), the producers gave the impression they were going to take AVENUE Q on tour - and then, after they won the Tony, they announced they'd done a secret deal with Las Vegas to take the show there instead, and a lot of people were... let's say, pissed off about that.
I'm gonna pull a Kanye and say Wicked deserved this. Which is weird, because I saw it before an audience of 4 people. Holy crap, that theater hall. There's more gold here than Asgard. This acceptance speech got more feedback than the actual show.
Wicked definitely should have won this award! Avenue Q was too risqué for my taste. Although I find it surreal of a coincidence Robert Lopez co wrote the songs for Frozen including Let It Go of course!
Avenue q is the most d tier show in the world how can anyone say Wicked is worse than this? It’s storyline is so bland and there are only two good songs in the entire show. Wicked has some of the best songs, best choreography, and no matter what you think about the story, it’s still better than this show. I was expecting a comment section full of people who said Wicked was better, but I’m greeted by Avenue q lovers. You can have your own opinions on Avenue q and wicked, but that is mine.
this is one of the greatest injustices in broadway history! wicked is still “popular” today. oh and i might add patti lupone’s defeat for anything goes!
Wicked is so boring and is just got that repetitive “nerdy girl makeover trope” which I despise with a passion. “Defying gravity” is meh, I’d rather blast “Everyone’s a little bit racist” by a long shot. I really wanted to like Wicked, but the songs aren’t catchy and are pretty bland in comparison to other songs from musicals I like. Humour too is a huge factor for my liking of musicals, and the lack there of in Wicked make me dislike it more. Avenue Q is original, it’s cast is phenomenal, the humour is on point every time and the changes by John Tartaglia (he plays both Rod and Princeton) are amazing to watch, considering he is one of sesame streets youngest puppeteers historically! This guy was also in Shrek: The musical, playing not only Pinocchio but doing the puppetry for the Magic Mirror and Dragon! The amount of effort and skill with the puppets that goes into Avenue Q having that magical feel is crazy, I wish people would give it a chance and not judge it for being “risqué” with its humour. It’s songs actually make you think too, making you reflect on your own behaviour and aren’t just what they seem at face value. If you don’t like humour that pokes fun at everyone then I guess it’s not for you, but I think that it’s comedic genius!!
If it wasn't for Avenue Q, there would be no Book of Mormon.
I just realized that. Wow.
And that would be a goddamn tragedy
It would.
Jose Acevedo truth
Or Frozen
Avenue Q winning best musical paved the way for more obscure musicals the thrive on broadway
True that...especially with the Bobby Lopez connection. BUT the cultural phenomenon and influence the "The Producers" had on Broadway a few years earlier can't be overlooked either
To everyone that says “wicked deserved it” if you listen to Avenue Q you will understand

Avenue Q is like Sesame Street, but for adults.

“Thank you Broadway for voting your heart” so true. Can’t remember the last time the supposed “front runner” didn’t win.

Oo and in 2018 the bands visit won over spongebob, frozen, and mean girls

The most deserved win in Tony’s history. To those theatre kids who only know wicked, watch this and you’ll love it
I read the South Park guys did Book of Mormon after they watched Avenue Q. And once they met Robert Lopez, he told them he made Avenue Q inspired in part for the South Park movie!
Is that...Hugh Jackman at the start or am I going crazy
Nope, you're not crazy. He was the host that night, along with winning Best Actor In A Musical for "The Boy From Oz".
I'm so happy they won!
The only puppets to ever win a tony.
"It certainly doesn't suck to be us tonight."
They're both good but I prefer avenue q tbh
Me too
NOOO WHY
@@austinkuklinski6354 well at Least wicked is still Running and the other one is closed already 😀
A show like Avenue Q was never done, and they sure as hell deserved that award.
Yes they did!
I see you @ "thank you for voting your heart"
I wonder what the cast and crew of Wicked was thinkingt that they lost

Still playing on Broadway 21 years later. Avenue Q is not.

Jealous?
Either of the two would have been a great choice, and I loved the speeches!
2004 was a hell of a year for the Tonys!
Lemme just go against all of y’all and say I would’ve voted for Caroline, or Change 👍

Maybe Liz Callaway?

And after two decades, Wicked is still running… 😍
YES FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DOESNT THINK AVENUE Q IS BETTER THAN WICKED
And? That's good because . . ?
Wicked never needed to win Best Musical to survive. By the time the Tonys aired, it was already consistently selling out.
How the hell did this beat wicked
Well if it wasn't for this we wouldn't have Book of Mormon

Just to add, Wicked was hella political on the time of its release, criticizing Bush. Thats way more rique than avenue q
