The thing so many people don't realize until they see it is that the shocking lines and comedy only work -- the show is only not WILDLY offensive because the music, lyrics, acting, and comedy all work together so seamlessly that the end result is both incredible theater and incredibly silly.

@blucolife - It was generally well-received in Utah by attendees who were not Mormon or who were inactive Mormons. I read reviews of it in other locations like Broadway in NYC and while most attendees who gave reviews liked it, there was still a fair amount of people who are not Mormon but do identify as Christian that found the mocking of God disrespectful, regardless of the religion.

@themoon9442 - I'm not Ugandan, but I do know the Broadway cast called for some script edits to make it more respectful to people of color and Ugandans. So, when Broadway theaters re-opened after the Covid lockdowns, the Book of Mormon had been given a slightly revised script. Other Broadway plays like Hamilton also got minor script edits to be more respectful to black characters too.
