My son is back from Army and I wanted to give him a BIG party for his birthday. I miss him so much that I wanted to show my love this way. He asked for an intimate dinner with his girlfriend and my husband and I. I spend $50 at Costco for a delicious steak dinner and gave him the rest in a Costco gas gift card. He was very thankful.

I love your videos. You are genuine and honest, and your advice is very relevant. I'm 37 and I have what many here in Canada would consider a good job. However, I was raised by parents with not much money, and I kept their savings habits.
Here are some of my most effective ways to save or make money 1) I invested in my education and now have a very well paying job for my federal government with a pension and insurances. Also, being French-Canadian, learning English alone probably is responsible for half my professional success. My job in a Deputy Minister's Office requires bilingual employees. 2) Biking to work. All in all, the low maintenance bike I bought and used for 8 years of commuting (so far) saved me about $6k in monthly bus passes. 3) Keeping everything I buy until it's completely worn out. I do this for everything. Clothes, tech etc. 4) Having a small home or apartment near work. Insurance, maintenance and everything is cheaper when it's smaller. Also, being near work allows me to bike to work.
Ok this is becoming a wall of text so I'll stop. But I could write forever about this.

5 Things I Don’t waste my money on!
    1. Expensive pampers( hahahaha ) I have a kid and I use average pampers. We don’t use the really cheap ones but the ones in the middle. They work just as good.
    2. Expensive Engine oil ( I use good quality oil but not the expensive ones my friends recommend or the car Manuel.
    3. Haircuts!! I let this guy that’s the cheapest in town cut my hair but he does a good job and I try to go every two weeks instead of every week.
    4. Fuel for my cars. I try my best to only drive my gas saver versus my car that burns a lot of fuel. Such as my truck
    5. Last but not least! When I go somewhere I try to leave my lady at home 😂😂 She love spending freaking money!! If I leave her at home I’ll save a lot more!!

I agree completely and I have practiced these rules since for over 20 years!
    7. Expensive Phones (I have a low-end Samsung, still does a great job and my monthly plan is super low) Annual savings: $30x12= $360
    6. Bottled Water (I have never bought bottled water from a supermarket. Ever! In extreme desperate cases or when it's offered for free and I am really thirsty, I'll have one) Annual savings: $100
    5. Overpriced Food (Packing a lunch for work since I was 18, healthier, cheaper and easier than running out to buy lunch) I go out for dinner occasionally (no alcohol/desserts) Annual savings: $1,300
    4. Addictive Substances (Cigarettes and illegal drugs are bad for you and incredibly expensive. Annual savings: $3,000 (a person I work with smokes a 1/2 pack a day which is about $8/half pack) Why people spend $3000 a year to get to an early grave is beyond my comprehension.
    3. Multivitamins (I take these but infrequently) maybe they work, maybe their useless. Annual spend $-30
    2. Full Price Clothes (I buy clothes inexpensively, buy on clearance, I stay away from name brands, and only buy some throughout the year.) Annual savings: $100 x 12 = $1,000
    1. Financial Advisors (I do pay for this service, very smart guy who has served me well) Annual % spend $500
So in total, by following these tips, I save $5, 230 CAD every year.
THAT is how you save money every year and repurpose it for other things (pay down mortgage, invest in stock market, etc).
    BONUS:
-I also drive a reliable 10 year old car that has been paid off 6 years ago. I figure if I were to lease a new car, or always be financing a new one, it saves me $3600 annually as well!
-I don't have a TV/cable bill. I use three home made HD antennas. (look it up how to build one on YT) I get 30 channels crystal clear. $360 per year savings (at minimum)
-I don't buy movies or music, The internet and library has all I need for entertainment.
-I avoid coffee shops, jewelry, and other unnecessary things

    • @CountrySingerWannabe

Even if you buy a carton and smoke a half pack a day that is a carton and a half per month. I don't know how much cartons are here in Dallas but lets say they are 60 bucks. 90 bucks a month for 12 months is 1080 bucks a year. When you stretch things out over a year small money adds up to big money.

Here is my full reply to this video.
Nate O'Brien, if you follow your own suggestions and I believe you do, you could be a
millionaire in the next few years. Restaurants are out altogether if you know how the
food is prepared. You can buy a 6lb. tenderloin for around $50.00 which can be cut at
home into about 12 to 18 filet mignon steaks. 15 would then cost $3.33. Add a Classic
Caesar Salad or Fresh Garden Salad with a side of a favorite vegetable, topped with
Garlic Toasts, then Expresso and Gelato for dessert. Final cost for 15 meals would be
about $65.00 depending on what grocery store you shop, equals $4.33 per meal.
Be sure to serve yourself with formal place settings and it's okay to add candles. You
have the $50.00 dinner for 90% less. I served my family of 5 dinners like this when it
was during the skinny budget years. There was no tipping, no traffic jams, no loud
noises, no fighting for parking spaces, no waiting for tables & no poorly cooked foods.
There are many great company recipes for a house full & no extra charges for the fun.

From age 18-24 I didn't own a car. I rode my bike to work every day and took the bus on snow days. I figure I saved about $3,000 a year (car insurance is very high at age 18-24) and car repairs and maintenance. I saved that money in a regular bank account and used it for a down payment on a house. I have never paid a landlord, since I moved away from home directly into my first house at 24! To this day, the best financial decision I made was not to buy a car when I was younger. I got into the real estate game 10 years ahead of my friends. HUGE advantage!

First, LG is not a knockoff brand. It's pretty legit. Also the more expensive phones have more RAM, faster processor, high resolution screen, better cameras, more storage, etc. Apple is overpriced, but there are still way better phones if you pay more.
Bottled water is necessary in some places that don't have clean tap water. It's also not that expensive, so it's not gonna make or break your bank account.
There are vitamins/supplements that are extremely good for your body like fish oil and are well worth the money.
Getting a good accountant is important, maybe not financial advisor since you can research a lot of things on your own. But people do pay money for consultants to help them make good business decisions, since not everyone has the time to research on their own or need a more experienced opinion.
Most of these things aren't things that will change your life if you save money on them. It's more about how much you spend on things you don't really use everyday, rather than saving a little bit of money here or there.

1.learn how to work on your own car.
2.get a walmart buzzer and cut your own hair long term . ( you will get better over time )
3.Learn how to cook ramen or spam different ways , this will take a good stomach but $$ saved
    4. Tell others you are training for a marathon and run to and from work. ( street credit plus gas savings$ )
5.Dont buy mens razors, shave with buzzer mentioned in section 2
6..dont buy mouthwash, hydrogen peroxide works better and is 1/4 the price ( 3 % concetration)
    7. set up a debit account with only 5 dollars in it.. so when companies want you to do a free trial but will charge you later , theres no money in the account ( activate overdraft protection asap
8.if you owe the IRS , set up a payment plan ,, No matter how petty the money is still better in your account than theirs ( this is a good rule for all debts not charging interest , especially medical
    9. wear whatever clothes are cheap , like walmart. If a woman is attracted to you they really dont care what youre wearing .. When you get older this will become obvious
10.. carry NO DOZ on you at all times.. When people you are with get coffee, pop a no doz.. theyre 20 cents /pill and same caffiene as a coffee
    11. Stop by the local college health clinic, grab a handful of condoms .. theyre free.

Some savy saving hacks that I do is:
    -UA-cam DIY/Tutorials for repairs
-Sew the holes on my clothes
    -Stopped buying makeup
-Making my Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner/ Desserts (Prep. Meals saves on time)
-Legumes is the way to go for healthy and cheap food alternatives
-Go to the library to rent books/DVDs/CD's
-Check out the FREE section on Craigslist
-Before throwing out a soap bottle. I fill up with a bit of water and shake it. It will still have enough soap for a few more uses.
    -Sample items at the mall
-Buying in bulk/Kirkland brand products a.k.a Costco
    -Brewing my own coffee
-Thrift stores, especially on sale items
I have more hacks but this is all I can come with at the time. After a while of getting in the habbit of saving it becomes easy and almost like a challenge of what can I cut out so I have save money to invest.

I pay 1% for someone at my bank ("wealth manager") to handle my investments. Last year (2018) I lost money. He said it was because of the losses the market experienced in December of 2018 (the worst is many years). When I told him that even though I lost money he got his fee. He smugly told me "yeah, well that number doesn't go up when you do real good". I was speechless. I think I am wasting money with this guy. My stocks are lucky to grow at a rate of 5% because I asked him to structure my investment strategy in something a bit moderate (not too aggressive therefore at risk to big losses). My growth after fees is abysmal and I was wondering what method or resource that you would recommend so I can fire my financial advisor and learn how to handle my investments on my own. Thank you, LG.

    • @davidbergaragonzalez5653
      @davidbergaragonzalez5653 5 років тому +1

5% is abysmal. Especially when you account inflation and on top of that he takes a piece. I am 20 so I don't have a lot of money but what I am doing is putting away half of my income (I have few expenses, live with my grandma) into a peer to peer lending portfolio. I know I'm going to have to diversify soon but at the moment I am getting over 11% returns by investing in short term loans. There is risk of course but I only buy loans with a buy back guarantee, which means the organization that gave out the loan will buy it back if it defaults. I also invest across several different loan originators to minimize the risk of losing money (if these organizations fail).

In Europe, you have some brands of bottled water who use glass bottles. You pay a small warranty for each bottle and get the money back when you bring them to the shop. You have this for some yoghurt brands too. Even if most people still buy the plastic bottles, I think this is the future; using this kind of system would reduce the amount of wasted plastic. Anyway, I buy the water I drink because I love the taste, but filter the tap water for cooking. And I agree you don't waste money this way.

I literally felt like I got a raise. eating out is a huge waste save for a few special occasions. one thing I'll admit to is I smoke but only a pack a week, normally just 2 a night while I have a beer and watch some financial vids like yours! keep saving bro! Also a big one you dident mention is cars! worst waste of money ever. we have 2 cars paid about 5k for one cash and 7k for the other. both great. but I have a lot of friends paying 700+ a month in car payments. not me all that goes into the bank and occasionally I have to fix something but I doubt i spend 1500 a year on regular maintenance AND things that break unexpectedly. course I'm really handy with cars and do all my own work.

I justified eating out by not buy clothing and purse, Bags because I made them all myself. I’m a fashion designer. I don’t buy expensive clothing, only vintage or recycled clothing. And you are correct I don’t have much saving but I enjoy the moment because I don’t know if I’m gonna be around tomorrow though I should try to save more and I think I could save more. I don't like the feeling of ghosting people now because I think at some point I have matured in some way. (I used to ghost people who are not interesting enough for me in the past) But I think ♋🦀 you might be wondering why I am not reacting on your posts anymore. It's intentional. You did nothing wrong?.. idk I low key think you did.. but the bottomline is that I need to set some boundaries. Call me delusional, assuming or whatever but ik the 'connection' in some way is still there. And I feel like its a form of micro cheating on both our ends if we continue entertaining 'this'. And my ♊ is feeling uncomfortable about it. So yah. I wish you well tho - financial goals, ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP goals, idk maybe fitness goals. She's a great catch. Take good care of her. Idk exactly what your religious beliefs are but God bless.

One thing more, most strong connections take time to build. I was not this comfortable with my ♊ at the start of our relationship. The connection is there from the start but its not as strong as now at present. But despite the struggles in communication, not being to be with him in person we managed to improve it so far. Be patient. Try to get to know her more, open up more. I think some of the best ways that make my feelings for my ♊ stable is we communicate no matter how awkward it can get, I take the time to learn him and my favorite is that I appreciate every little thing he does for me (I'm naturally this way tho) instead of looking for other options. Be clear with your intentions within the relationship and every decision regarding the connection is easy to make.

With some of these things, it's good to consider TIME you save by purchasing it over not. For example food, I used to cook all my meals, but I'm pretty busy and it just became an extra daily burden (30min-1hr) of my time. Plus I hate cooking. I'd rather pay for food and invest that time in something else, say working out more which is what i've done.

I agree on the phone. I am on well water that is highly mineralized I dont buy water often but sometimes i need to. As you get older you will find that you cant just eat anything you want so your food will cost a bit more because you have to be choosier. I agree about the addictions .... with the exception of love. Love is both the best and worst addiction. Vitamins are good when you are sick and i find i need the boost sometimes but most of the time i let be. I live in my uniforms it seems but when i do dress up i wash the clothes in cold water and i hang them up to air dry them. the clothes really do last longer if you dont put them in the dryer. Also look up a good pair of shoes (that fit you well)that are not glued but stitched to the sole. you wont regret it as they last decades longer than a regular pair of shoes. I agree on the advisor to a point. I think everyone should talk to an accountant , a banker , and a lawyer about finances at least once a decade. They will have insights that most people dont.

Agreed. Netflix can consume your life! Imagine if people read books instead of binged on "Friends"

I wonder Nate, what drives you to be so thrifty at such a young age? Did your parents have money when you were younger? I think you’re wonderful! Keep up the great work!!

Ive gotten better with budgeting, mainly cause I wanna be healthier! I too, shop for clothing in the off seasons, like summer in the fall, winter in the spring, and vice versa! Saves me so much moolah! Im totally a fashionista too! Meijers has terrific deals on clearance! I can buy certain tops and bottoms, for $1-$3!! Sometimes even less! However, there are times, when I HAVE to buy the average priced, quality, fitting, jeans and pants. But, if your saving in all aspects of your life, you can afford the pricey things.

Christina Nelson and splurging on good quality pieces saves money long term since it won’t fall apart after four washes.

    One tip on multivitamins;
If you really want to use them, buy complete multivitamins. So don’t separately buy B12, K & so forth. It saves a lot
