I have the ECS catback as well. It is loud and has too much drone for me with an aftermarket downpipe (IE catted). I added a 16" mbrp resonator just downstream of the midpipe, and it helped a bit. Flow and price were my concerns as well. And you are correct, getting a 4 cylinder exhaust to sound good is an exercise in futility.
