I finished Xenogears for the first time on January 1st (2024)! What a game... Too big, too large, too out there, too smart, too much... They really needed four CDs to do it justice. Absolutely incredible game.
Xenogear's story was drafted to be FF7 originally, but was deemed too heavy! The director also had a lot of ideas (which kinda overflowed in the game too)! Square missed out on this!
And then it was supposed to be a sequel to Chrono Trigger but became its own thing. You can see a lot of similarities like multiple timelines, the floating high tech city, even the 3 sages with the exact same names. Really, the story boils down to, "What if HUMANS were the children of Lavos?"
No video game has ever touched me as deeply as Xenogears. More and more I listen to the soundtrack and to find your renditions was a real joy. Thank you, sincerely.
It Is something very personal indeed... Xenogears is dark, mature, complex, mysterious and...incomplete 😅 All this things made this game look extremely fascinating to me when i played for the first time. It was something visceral, and very different to what i felt by playing Chrono trigger and many other JRPGs. But of course, i know that CT is one of your favourites, and this is great! I hope you never give up playing music from both of them 😊
@@acet88ya got that right. I can’t play it anymore. Gameplay and characters are really lacking. lol. But I loved the story and the music is just beautiful. The idea to program fret noise into PlayStation midi like that was genius at its time. Don’t hate me but xenogears gameplay is so tedious to me. I wish I liked it more or I’d replay it way more and love it way more. Maybe if I could ffwd the battles on emulator…

Xenogears is a very long game but the sound track keeps you there for all 70 hours... and in the end it is one of my favorites! You did such a wonderful job here on the piano it really takes me back to the summer in the late 90s when I played this game.

I started playing XG for the very first time a few weeks ago. It's amazing the amount of wonderful pieces its soundtrack has, and the piano versions (plus your singing) you played that day on stream were amazing, like you were seriously recording the album! Just finished another playthrough of this game recently and came across this. This game has one some of the best music ever. Personal favorite is Bonds of Sea and Fire. There's just something about these songs that have a lot of emotion in them. I wish they had the time to complete the game and give it the love it deserved. I know they won't ever remake this gem, but one can hope.
Also. Your heart sings and your fingers move during upbeat songs. You've gotten me through many sleepless nights and etc. You're talented and lovely and again, thank you for being you.
The start and transition to the main chorus of Leftovers from the Dreams of the Strong at the 22:20 mark was so powerful . I love that song so much in actual game.

Stars of tears, Shevat, the Wind is Calling, One Who is Torn Apart, Pray for the People’s Joy; I was particularly interested on these 4 as they're my favorites. I like your singing voice and your cover of the whole ost! these 4 have been on my playlist since late 2000s along with earlier Motoi Sakurabi compositions (Tales of Destiny, Valkyrie Profile, Golden Sun)

What a soundtrack this is, though! The original PSX sound made some tracks... not click with me, but hearing them played on the piano is much more appealing.

I love Shattering Egg of Dreams and Lost Broken Shards, good recurring theme, like in Illusion of Gaia the Town Theme they played after every time they solved an issue. Love Flight (Maria and Seibzehn with her father's brain algorithms in it protecting her, or whatever it was, and CHUCHU!) and The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen. And GRAHF! Wings, love the theme, and such a giant ship... Leftovers, Aveh, October Mermaid, Ship of Regret, Omen. MY VILLAGE IS NUMBER ONE. Oh Mitsuda! Though few tracks I almost thought it was Hitoshi Sakimoto who did Final Fantasy Tactics. Fuse, Steel Giant, Knight of Fire, for instance. Almost Stage of Death the normal battle theme. I loved this game, though I haven't played it, I watched HCBailly's Let's Play of it in 2018. And he played it at an appropriate time for me, too. Like the mindstate of Fei. Guess there was a story about how Xenogears could've been ff7, but the main characters both at least cover some mental issue conflict. And Cloud when mako-poisoned and mindbroken even QUOTES THE SONG, SMALL TWO PIECES. He's in the wheelchair and trying to sing it, but he's confusing the lyrics, says, "billion mirror fragments... small... light." But Xenogears just is so mind-blowing and deep, perhaps took much from Evangelion. Solaris. The theme is so amazing, and funny Almost reminded me of your Banjo Kazooie playing there, lol. 29:21 And that is what;s so good about you! Lol. 1:00:27 Light from the Netherworld WOAH HOLY CRAP birthday girl ATTACK! 1:12:55 Lol, the expressions, "Ah yes, yess... ANDHOWYOULIKE THAT!? And thaAt? And uh that, and thaAT? And uh that and thaAt? and uh that! And thaAt?!" XENOGEARS! When I saw this had dropped, I went in my annoying nasally nerd-child voice, like begging for McDonald's, or like a cat, "Eehhhn, Kara Comparettooooooooo!" Beautiful finish. Love the singing.
This is incredible! I've loved the music from Xenogears for years and hearing it arranged for piano is so amazing. I really feel like Yasunori Mitsuda is one of the most underloved composers out there. It's funny that you can pick up a composers musical signature just by hearing their music. After listening to so much of Mitsuda's work, you can pick up his signature style. His works really have an incredible amount of emotion to them, especially if you consider what he had to work with for the SNES/PS1. You did a wonderful job with this cover as always, Kara! Thank you so much for taking the time to share it with all of us.
And that's what makes a composer great- their style that no one else has and that you can spot when you hear it! I notice similarities all the time between his three great soundtracks (xenogears, Chrono Cross, and trigger)
A piano that sounds, a divine touch, a magnificent soundtrack, brilliant arrangements... the recipe is perfect: it's a treat for the ears! You breathe the right emotion into each note for more than an hour, and the sequences between the pieces are very well done. It’s also always a nice surprise to hear you sing. I am happy to see that my arrangements, always too complex with too many notes, find pianists capable of tackling them. I didn't really recognize my version of Proto Man's theme but I like the way you adapted this melody.
Sometimes your arrangements get torched on stream HAHA!@@GabbPiano but most of the time I can play the basic sheets but eliminate things that are too much for spending only a few minutes learning it :) So that's why you might notice them sounding a little different haha!

Mitsuda is one of my favourites composers, Xenogears's musics are magnificents. I'm listening to you while working and it gives me a quiet and relaxing feeeling. I'm humming at the same time and it reminds me when I played the game years ago. Thank you so much.

What a soundtrack this is, though! The original PSX sound made some tracks... not click with me, but hearing them played on the piano is much more appealing.
Yes I agree! Some of these would actually sound sooooo good on organ but I couldn't do both haha.
@@KaraComparetto Heh! Yes, I can imagine some of the late-game tracks sounding great on the organ! And then there's the track that is even portrayed as being played on an in-game organ (... while played by the game using a sampled organ - organception!).

I love Shattering Egg of Dreams and Lost Broken Shards, good recurring theme, like in Illusion of Gaia the Town Theme they played after every time they solved an issue.
Love Flight (Maria and Seibzehn with her father's brain algorithms in it protecting her, or whatever it was, and CHUCHU!) and The Treasure that Cannot be Stolen. And GRAHF!
Wings, love the theme, and such a giant ship... Leftovers, Aveh, October Mermaid, Ship of Regret, Omen. MY VILLAGE IS NUMBER ONE.
Oh Mitsuda! Though few tracks I almost thought it was Hitoshi Sakimoto who did Final Fantasy Tactics. Fuse, Steel Giant, Knight of Fire, for instance. Almost Stage of Death the normal battle theme.
I loved this game, though I haven't played it, I watched HCBailly's Let's Play of it in 2018. And he played it at an appropriate time for me, too. Like the mindstate of Fei.
Guess there was a story about how Xenogears could've been ff7, but the main characters both at least cover some mental issue conflict. And Cloud when mako-poisoned and mindbroken even QUOTES THE SONG, SMALL TWO PIECES. He's in the wheelchair and trying to sing it, but he's confusing the lyrics, says, "billion mirror fragments... small... light." But Xenogears just is so mind-blowing and deep, perhaps took much from Evangelion.
Solaris. The theme is so amazing, and funny Almost reminded me of your Banjo Kazooie playing there, lol.

This is incredible! I've loved the music from Xenogears for years and hearing it arranged for piano is so amazing. I really feel like Yasunori Mitsuda is one of the most underloved composers out there. It's funny that you can pick up a composers musical signature just by hearing their music. After listening to so much of Mitsuda's work, you can pick up his signature style. His works really have an incredible amount of emotion to them, especially if you consider what he had to work with for the SNES/PS1.
You did a wonderful job with this cover as always, Kara! Thank you so much for taking the time to share it with all of us.
And that's what makes a composer great- their style that no one else has and that you can spot when you hear it! I notice similarities all the time between his three great soundtracks (xenogears, Chrono Cross, and trigger)

I am happy to see that my arrangements, always too complex with too many notes, find pianists capable of tackling them. I didn't really recognize my version of Proto Man's theme but I like the way you adapted this melody.

Sometimes your arrangements get torched on stream HAHA!@@GabbPiano but most of the time I can play the basic sheets but eliminate things that are too much for spending only a few minutes learning it :) So that's why you might notice them sounding a little different haha!
