    What a great video, poor Stuart, it’s so sad he was broken up. I used to holiday there in the late 50s/early 60s staying in Wroxall and have such fond memories of the lovely little steam trains.

    Stuart deserved better, the world needs a replica of Stuart. They need to know what he has done.

    Thanks Jack, I am surprised how much rail was laid in such a small area, just a shame that a lot of it did not survive. That said, it is good that you bring us good video's and knowledge from the past. To which I thank-you. Best Wishes. Andrew.

    Nice to see so many places where I used to walk, 2/3rd of a lifetime ago once more! And good to see the films of Island steam.
    Your first drawing of 'Stewart' makes me think it reached the Island via Bolton's Siding, which specialised in rebuilding and re-homing pre-loved locomotives. Incidentally, your photo of the opening of the Merstone to St Lawrence line makes me wonder if that was where they got the carriages from - those are pure 'Rocket' era stock. Pity she didn't last long enough to have helped build the FY&N line!
    Stewart's new to me - and I'd read pretty well every IoW railway book. She'd have been good company for the pair of little Sharp Stuart 2-2-2 well tanks which ran on the IoW Central.

      Hello John. Yes I believe the coaches were mid 1800s stagecoach design- the IW Central had a few at the time. Yes Pioneer and Precursor I seem to remember them being called for the Cowes & Newport Railway. The books I got much of the ibfo from if you're interested are the Maycock & Silsbury editions. Thanks for your comment John and for watching 🙂👍

    I wonder why it wasn't 3ft gauge like the Isle of Man? I suppose it was easier just to copy the mainland.

    • @WightWanderer
      @WightWanderer  5 днів тому

      That's a good question- there were any narrow gauge tramways on the island. None of them carried passengers though ... if I had a time machine I'd go back and ask 👐

    Another great video, Jack. Talking of the Manning Wardle "Stanley" aka "Bembridge" there is a surviving MW Q class at the Severn Valley Railway, currently under overhaul with a new boiler on order. This one Warwickshire was the last MW Q built but is almost identical to the one owned by the FYN (W1 Medina.)
    It would be nice if it could visit the island one day when running.

    • @WightWanderer
      @WightWanderer  5 днів тому

      Hello mate. Yes that would be wonderful if it could. Maybe in some kind of FYR guise though I seem to remember it did last long enough to be repainted into Southern livery if that's correct? Want to model it at some point definitely. Hope you're well Nathan 🙂👍

    • @nathanbowers6364
      @nathanbowers6364 5 днів тому +1

      @WightWanderer yes she ended up as W1 Medina. Withdrawn in 1931 when the first three E1s came over.

      @@WightWanderer no not yet. Rapido Trains are producing the smaller MW L classes so I'm hoping they'll create the larger Q which could give us both Stanley (earlier part cab) and FYN No 1/W1.
