11:52 20 min colour studies of paintings from an artist he admires. Amazing idea to break things down and start small :) 14:15 and also do quick studies of colour from imagination to ensure you digested all the information you learned through imitation and are able to apply it to your own ideas and work.
Totally makes sense to find a way to enjoy a habit. It's good to try things even if you think you won't like it. Or just commit to something really small. Like put on your exercise shoes.
My studies have honed copying abilities, but don't seem to improve my creature design or fantasy illustration skills; what should one do if their personal and/or subject-focused works are noticeably inferior to their academic pieces?
I've been meaning to head out to my local natural history museums and get some drawing practice. I'm obsessed with birds and wings and how they attach to the body. Maybe just go to the museum or library, get references for lots of body parts and play around with them?
