You forgot to mention that trying to weld through the zinc coating produces a weak weld that tend to crack.

I made mine with conduit and MIG welding, if it's piled on good it's quite strong, but yes the zinc should be right off of it

Just grind the coating off the best you can before welding that coating causes cancer hope it turns out for ya so far looks good
