21:26 "Its good, overall! The problem is... I hate almost everything about this episode!" is such a Michael thing to say
"EAT IT STANLEY!" I've yelled this out loud during moments of frustration, elation, boredom... every of the time 😂😂😂
Wasn't there also an EAT IT OSCAR when he was the 2nd smartest person in the Office?
What is so funny about this?
Hey everybody, I just invited Jim to suck it
Jim didn't even need to ask to borrow Darryl's office-- Andy is on a boat! His office is empty!
"Smile if you love mens prostates" When Toby just randomly said to a woman and child with a creepy smile, always get a chuckle out of me for how cringe it is.
Personally, I like the Oscar arc. He was previously used as the cerebral voice of reason, the Scranton branch's smudge and arrogant superego incarnate, and his sexual orientation was inconsequential.
As a gay man, I appreciated that he wasn't stereotyped as a promiscuous effeminate comic-relief character the moment his character was outed in season 3. That was a really even-handed and rather unusual treatment of a gay character in that era of pop culture.
Edit 2: I enjoyed the occasional humorous but not clownish references to Oscar's gay identity and tastes, like the Finer Things Club and his excitement over the hardwood floors under the office carpet... gay men do often find themselves in a gray area of wanting to be treated "just like everyone else" but there is also a difference in our cultural references and interests that often differentiates a lot of us from our straight colleagues and can lead to us carving out niches of gay-space and self-segregating or developing closer platonic relationships with our feminine colleagues.
That said, I saw a lot of my own experiences as a gay man reflected in the state senator arc... watching him fall for an ostensibly straight man, the constant pressure and second-hand shame of being with a partner who is not publicly out, the mental gymnastics and rationalizations and painful betrayals that gay men put themselves and others through regarding all sorts of non-monogomous MSM relationships but especially in mixed-orientation marriages/partnerships.
Edit: just to be clear, I don't think closeted gay men get some sort of free pass to engage in infidelity or any of that stuff. The trauma of living in a world with homophobia and the yearning for a closeted love interest to accept themselves for who they are does not excuse lying and betrayal.
I thought it was really realistic from an emotional perspective even if the plot itself was kinda mid.
I’m a bi dude and I just want so say I think this is a really insightful analysis and really adds depth to reading this plot
@@Cdr2002 thanks bro ❤️ 💙
@@TheRepublicOfJohn of course!
Wait, you're actually gay? Pffftthahahaha!
So Jan living in Scranton is actually a long running thing. In Goodbye Toby, Kevin runs into Jan at the supermarket. It would be weirder for her to drive all the way over to the supermarket in Scranton for whatever reason. And then in Sex-Ed, Michael and Dwight drive to Jan's job at a hospital, so that means that at the time, Jan was working within driving distance of the office.
Lastly, the point of the montage was so the audience that came after season 5, which because of Stress Release as well as many other reasons, would know that Jan was deranged.
"Working within working distance"
@@Richard_Nickerson Thanks for pointing that out. I just fixed it.
@@henrypeters5291
No probablo 👍😎👍
@@Richard_Nickerson Do you mean "no problemo"
@@henrypeters5291
No, it's an old internet reference. A side character on Homestar Runner.
I find it weird that a person like Toby doesn't get a good ending. But Jan does.
Always bugged me. But the office rewarded bad behavior more often than good behavior all the time.
I didnt realize "white pages" were actually a thing and in the show it was just a parody of yellow pages because that was a copyrighted thing or something
The difficulty for the writers was that they wanted to fill the void left by Steve Carell. The producers logically concluded that Ed Helms should fill that void because he was the biggest star they had. But that also meant that he had other stuff (like filming Hangover 3) that made it difficult to make good story arcs. I'm guessing that's why the writers said eff it, and made the Andy character a real ass.
Dwight was their breakout star, they could’ve pivoted to him, or started focusing on Jim and Pam again cause they were the original stars until about season 4 when the focus shifted to being more Michael-heavy
@@Cdr2002 I would say Dwight was their most interesting character, aside from Michael Scott. But Rainn Wilson didn't have much success with the movies he made and NBC passed on the spin-off show focused on the Dwight character. In the 9th season they did focus back on PB&J, but the story arc about their marital conflict didn't resonate with the audience.
@@jerkytoo8184 fair points, and I agree about Dwight. He was the Spock of the show. To add on; I definitely don’t going all the way back to season 1’s vision and trying to sell Ryan as a main character again after all this time would have worked at all, so maybe their hands were kinda tied
I vote that you next do Field Guides for Parks and Recreation.
2d choice - The Good Place
Could you beat up a bear called man though?
No…but I’m sure my bravado at the moment would convince me otherwise.
Sometimes when I watch this episode and the Jim meeting bit comes up, I yell at my TV "Just take the call in the car!!"
And by sometimes I mean all times.
All the times.
Every of the times!
Same! It's as contrived as a 90s teen movie.
They messed up playing on Helm's star power choosing him as the manager, ended up causing the problems you outline in the cold open. They took the easy way out!
That's a good point! They wanted to have a dynamic boss, and then instead had no boss at all...
9:50 is absolutely artful
if you lower your standards of The Office, season 9 is watchable.
Maybe David knew Andy was out of town but not how long he was gone by the time Andy ultimately returned
I think you summed up the issue with Andy’s arc perfectly. They were more focused on selling a character we just met the show doesn’t actually do much with into a romantic arc than paying off a main character they had put a lot of previous work into
Does your mom call you pedantic
Giving Andy the role of Roy in this season kind of checks out with the Office UK special when Dawn breaks up with Lee while on vacation. I just don't feel like this is a show where a parallel like that can be satisfying.
A man named bear was funnier than most of the episode. Jim not being able to sit in his car, Andy''s office, or just leave the darn building (all of which he's never been scared of doing before) is pointless and the Kevin bit is one of his dumbest (rough curve). Angela/Oscar is the high point so far. So Dwight has been the best salesman in the company forever or so but can't sell to women? I ain't buying it. Also, pimping out a guy? Gross. Mixed bag.
#sixseasonandafieldguide
Ooh I concur
I agree about your points about Andy. Wasted character
Now children, a book was...
Scranton is untouched by trends
I still would like to see a one off video of "Dunder Mifflin's largest client" a title that seems to jump to a different company every couple of episodes.
That would be interesting.
Does anyone know if Clark was away filming Kick Ass 2 when he was away? Because that movie came out around the same time and it just feels right.
Arrested Development field guide.
Wait......am i hearing this right but are you explaining a phone book 😭😭😭
You see…back before online fraud was a thing the only thing we had to worry about putting our name, phone number and addresses into the phone book was sharing the same first and last name as a target of a terminator.
@Mulverine uh okay i guess...
@Mulverine like im talking about explaining the phone book like it's a relic of ancient Rome but sure terminator
If someone watches this field guide in 5 years odds are they won’t have much context of a phone book, that’s why I included
@@MylingCyrus
You're old enough to see the explanation as an insult, yet you're completely whooshed by the Terminator joke?
We've all seen that the Walkman is now in a museum as vintage. We've all seen the posts of "a teenager asked me if I was old enough to have seen a ps2 in person & I died inside" and the like... yet here you are being aggressive about the fact that he explained phone books. It's definitely necessary for a good portion of people on UA-cam.
After you finish The Office field guides you should do field guides on the webisodes.
Wow you are speed running these!
I dont know what other shows you like but i think theres other shows you can do field guides for after office like b99 or superstore.
He reviewed Season 1 of Superstore a while back.
Moving on... review Parks and Rec : )
I second that!
Not to scare you Mulverine but all that info you can’t believe was handed out to everyone is still readily available
Yeah, it's literally in everyone's pocket.

I am not sure if you referring to my criticism at 7:13 , but that was not my point bro ...
When the office field guide is over can I suggest a community one pls
Yes!
You should follow this series up with a webisode field guide to all of those than move to something like parks and rec that would definitely keep core viewers of the channel here
I love the GTAV clip you put in there at 9:30

Do at the very very very least do a review of the movie Office Space.

I don't know if this your style, but I love your work and I would be thrilled to follow a "field guide" kind of thing about Bojack Horseman. Or about Community.

Community Field Guide!!!!
The Clarke and Jan history here is my least favourite part of the programme.
Bri'ish "person"
Don't call me a social justice warrior but here are my thought son male privilege and toxic masculinity.
I think Dwight would pick the bear too. Like he would suggest that we pick the bear
Dwight might pick the bear, but he's constantly cautioning people about bears. I think he would fixate on their danger.
In the wild, he is a lion. The question is, would a lion beat a bear?
Parks and Rec next pls 🙂
would have made more sense if they used the yellow pages, which was still actually circulating
don't ever try and write comedy
Jan's so hot!!!
I think the Clark thing went a little too far for the show. I don't like them teasing that Jan was into... You know what.
Apt analysis Chris
Men are more dangerous than bears
Hope that clears things up for everyone reading this ♥️
I'm new to the discourse... I'd disagree with the statement taken as a whole, but I'm sure there is plenty of compelling data supporting the position you take as well. If your position on the issue is because of your personal experiences with men, that really sucks and I'm sorry to hear that 😢 and though I disagree with your position in this particular question, I would agree that men need to call out toxic masculinity and do our part to prevent violence of all types perpetrated against women *and girls.
If I imagine being told my mom/any woman or girl relative/friend/colleague or my hypothetical daughter was out in the woods and suddenly stumbled upon a random man, I'd be more concerned than if she stumbled upon a random woman, but less concerned than if she stumbled upon a bear.
@@TheRepublicOfJohn
Yes, any given adult bear has greater potential to be more physically dangerous than any given unarmed man.
Everyone who views this scenario in this way is entirely missing the point. Many of them are doing so disingenuously too.
The original scenario is framed as a random bear in the woods or a random man in the woods.
Given that scenario, you are actually not typically in danger around the bear. Bears in the woods are less dangerous than bears in, say, your neighborhood. Plenty of videos of people just chilling with bears, bears just walking past hikers on trails, people easily scaring away bears, etc.
A random guy in the woods, especially off trail? Much more suspicious.
How many deaths by bear occur in the US annually?
How many deaths by men occur in the US annually?
Then factor in that humans have the mental capacity to be vicious & evil in ways other than physical violence. Then factor in that humans can arm themselves with a variety of things.
People who don't understand why others choose the bear over the man are proving themselves to be pretty small minded. Unimaginative, at the very best. Ill-informed & discrediting towards animals too.
@@Richard_Nickerson Oh, for sure bro! I hear you and I agree with basically everything you're saying, except the "how many deaths?" question... I don't know the ratio of harmful encounters vs total encounters, and maybe you're using short-hand and meant for it to be understood that we're talking about per capita ratios, I'm very much open to that being true too. There's plenty of nuance to the hypothetical scenario presented, and we could go back and forth for days trying to nail it down what exact scenarios we're comparing but I don't think either of us would be saying anything new or salient, right?
Men pose a significantly higher risk to women than women pose toward men, and that's a major problem we need to consistently work on solving permanently. We agree on that, right?
I still, based on only my own emotional beliefs and gut instinct, would prefer to hear that a woman I love who was lost in the woods had stumbled upon a man than a bear. I see men in my life do shitty things to women and I see them act in incredibly heroic, difficult, protective, and self-sacrificing manner, not out of patriarchal or paternalistic misogyny, but out of a broadly gender-blind and often consciously feminist instinct. I work in construction, there's a lot of toxicity and sexism and misogyny, but I'd wager that if push comes to shove, me and my brothers and sisters on the jobsite would not hesitate to act properly, in the interest of a woman in danger, whether it be a colleague or a random stranger. There are a lot more genuine feminists out there in blue-collar insustry than most people might believe, even if those feminists would baulk at being called a 'feminist' haha
Edit: And a lot of us men in construction do consciously identify and take real action as feminists. A creepy coworker is talking about a woman on the jobsite or on our crew? We shut that shit down. A man is suffering an issue in a personal intimate-partner relationship with a woman and says some unhinged shit about harming the woman? Nope, not gonna fly. I'm making a note of it, extending employee assistance resources to him for mental health counseling, and monitoring the situation regularly... and if need be, contacting the proper authorities if the expressions turn to threats that seem even slightly credible.
An incel co-worker, especially a younger male, starts talking about women (in ways I can't elaborate on in the comment section)? Boy, GTFO... you're an incel because you lack confidence, maturity, respect etc., and we will not abide that kind of hooligan BS here or anywhere else. Knock it off.
And we consciously and deliberately set good examples for the young kids on the jobsite... for how real men talk to and about women, especially our union Sisters on the jobsite... and for how to navigate relationships with their partners at home. A lot of these young men confide in their journeymen and foremen about "girl troubles"... the best thing I can do is help my helpers and apprentices talk through their problems step by step and acknowledge tough facts... she's not into you... she said she doesn't like that thing you're doing or saying... stop sending those unsolicited pics, that's disrespectful... no I don't want to see those pics she DM'd you in confidence that you'd keep them private, don't show those to other people... stuff like that
@@TheRepublicOfJohn
Once I got to the "nuance" part & checked how long your comment was, I stopped reading.
You are proving that you are either missing the entire point or are one of those disingenuous people.
The point of the hypothetical is NOT to prove that one is more dangerous than the other in an objective sense. It's not a debate.
The point is that people, not just women, feel safer around what you perceive to be an incredibly dangerous animal than just some guy. It's not your place to tell them they're wrong. It's not solicitation to be asked for justification (which you then deny at length after pretending to agree).
That very last bit makes me think you're the disingenuous kind.
@@Richard_Nickerson your call... if you keep reading, you might change your mind, but I'm an internet stranger, it doesn't really matter if you agree or like what I'm saying
Loved this episode, purely for Jan. The single greatest character!! And the highlight is Pam's look to the camera as Jan is silent-singing. A look that encapsulates Jan's insanity, in one single shot.
Fun Fact: here in the UK we don't have White Pages. The Yellow Pages containes everything. And we still got them up until the pandemic
So you are implying you have fought a bear named Man? =)
7:35 but the point is that, females also have privileges. So your point is not really good
interesting point of view, elaborate?

@@trueblade3636 i think if you’re referring to women being appointed for jobs solely on the grounds of representation, you’ll find that that’s a lot less common than you would think
@@angelinacalvert7887 it's still there. And it is the opposite thing what of we want to discourage. People being appointed for jobs solely on the grounds of things that you cannot help (gender, etnicity, etc.).

Ypu're recent political commentary is off-putting. I watched EVERY single one of you videos, but I stopped today. Thank you for all your work up until recently.
The Man/Bear thing is just another way to shit on men.
But why are men more dangerous then bears
Come on dude, recognizing that misogyny exists and acknowledging asymmetrical rates of violence against women by men isn't "shitting on men", it's just acknowledging broad demographic facts. I certainly think a woman would be safer in the woods with a random man than a wild bear, I think most men would step up and do positive acts *of* masculinity, but the fact that the question exists and resonates with so many people should give us pause to think and reflect as men and as a society. It couldn't be any clearer bro
