  • I was honored to meet ballet dancer Annie Glaudane in Riga, Latvia, where we created an intro together by her choreographing a ballet dance set to a piece of music I produced for her. It was performed in Riga's prestigious Celebration Hall, in the House of Black Heads, one of Latvia's most stunning venues.
Annie's interview primarily focuses on her highly unique and rare achievement of starting ballet late at age 19 and then being accepted into the Riga Choreography School at age 21. She has won multiple competition and dance awards, and her full time career now covers multiple styles of dance.
    Annie social media:
    Instagram and Tik Tok: @annieglaudane
    UA-cam: AKDreams
    Website: annieglaudane.com

I started ballet at 19 too (in 2006), a few months before turning 20. Everyone, both teachers and friends told me to dedicate myself to something else, to study a career at the university because I would never become a professional dancer. They were right, I was not talented, I was discordid, I had little flexibility and I didn't have the support of my family. It was definitely not going to be successful.
But I loved it so much (and I still love it) and was willing to do whatever it took to make up for my lack of talent. I knew I was not going to be the best dancer, but I was confident that at least I was going to do it professionally. And so it was, 7 years later (2013) I got my first contract in a professional company. I continue to dance professionally to this day and I still want to do it for many more years. I am not a virtuous dancer, I'm still not so flexible and still discord. But when I go on stage I steal the attention of even the talented, the virtuous, and the flexible. How? On the reverse of becoming obsessed with what I did not have, I worked on my strengths, which are the partnering technique, interpretation and stage presence, I'm not the best in my company nor do I pretend to be, I already got what I wanted, to dance professionally, and I will continue working to be a better professional every day. Anyone can achieve anything they set out to do, it is enough to want and be willing to fight until the last consequence. When I was a ballet student, I didn't even have enough to eat, I lived in favor in the dance studios where I studied and at night I went out to ask for food on the street. I knew it was temporary, I never gave up, I paid the price and got what I wanted.

As an ex professional dancer can I just say, no matter the age you started, you’ve definitely had the full classical training in every aspect. The wonderful thing is, that the journey there has been so different to 95% of the dance world. I say follow your intuition, it’s done well for you so far. Every experience you’ve had, is what makes you so unique. Can’t wait to see what you will do in the future. Also, love a ballerina that drinks a beer!

I believe I said "I took my first ballet class at 19"? 😅 Gymnastics gives a little advantage but mich less than I expected because no other dance style/sport works on turnout so that part was completely unfamiliar 😊 and that part I still struggle with all the time.. sorry if I misled you, I do find it hard to put information into correct phrazing when I talk and this is an excerpt of a nearly 3 hour interview 🙂

I started ballet late at 15 but I had no previous dance or sports training, I too went to ballet school aged 21 and I had to work in bars and restaurants at night to pay my bills, I injured my back in my first year at ballet school by stretching too far, and I also had os trigonum surgery on my ankle last year!

That’s amazing! I say that age shouldn’t be a deterrent when starting something new. Sure, you may need to have realistic goals but having something like ballet, music or art as a hobby/passion is enriching at every stage of life. It’s not exactly the same, but I played piano from 3 to 18. I quit for 6 years and picked it up as a hobby again at 24. No, I will not be playing Rachmaninov Concertos at Carnegie Hall, but I don’t want to. It’s something I do for myself because I just love it for its own sake.
