I know it's a matter of personal taste, or preference, but Freddie was always my favorite of the Three Kings. Love B.B., love Albert, but Freddie just kills me. The way I see it, B.B. had the frankincence, and Albert had the myrrh, but Freddie had the gold.
I love BB's melodic sensibility, but he would never push his gain like Freddie. The only time he did, on Blues is King, he made his best record. No matter what John Mayer says.
Buddy is my Guy. But man you MUST appreciate the 3 Kings. Well done Michael. I enjoy your interaction as well, the way you give the band love on their piece also... Outstanding...
Such a treat to see someone grin their way through this performance! I feel like running out on the street and grabbing people and make them listen to this. One of the greatest performances ever.
@@Guitargate I'm just passing through. I used to see Derek play with the ABB in the early 90's as a kid. Just a suggestion. If you do or don't have Amazon Prime, watch Long Strange Trip. And like a concert I'll tell you that episode 3 at 15 minutes is a must watch and listen. Peace.
Blues has definitely influenced Trucks' playing, there's no doubt- but check out sarod legend Ali Akbar Khan and you'll see where Derek really gets his playing from
Was listening to Buddy Guy and this came up next. It’s a day for some classic blues it seems. My siblings played and still play in blues bands I heard blues playing from a young age. I could never say one genre is my favourite but some days it’s just gotta be the down home dirty sweet twang with a little mouth harp blues. Thank you for a deep and enthusiastic analysis and your pure unadulterated enjoyment that is catching. 😬😬
Thanks to the Canadians and Europeans for all the great footage of the R&B/Jazz/Blues music during the 50's,60's and even 70's was alot more inviting and hospitable to the African American musicians and artist even to this day.
I followed your BB video with Freddie, whew...what a great way to contrast the beautiful subtlety that is BB with the raw power and cutting tone that is Freddie. Two masters with their own unique voice. The three Kings are still the pinnacle after 60+ years. I've played blues since I was 17 and I'm still learning from these 3 at 53. Thanks for the deep dive and different approach
thank you micheal. I have had untreated hearing loss all my life until this past year. omg. this music is crazy sensational and rich. this music class is so fun and I'm learning so much. bless you.
PLEASE MORE BLUES! YOU ARE SUCH AN INSPIRATION!! YOU HAVE GIVEN MORE PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE THAN ANYONE I'VE EVER MEET BEFORE. YOU ARE BEST TEACHER EVER. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!
I've read about his use of that amp before - cranked and treble maxed out I think. At 14:12 I immediately thought the folks in the front row that are dead ahead of his amp must've been deaf at that point, lol.
Saw him play couple times at mother blues in Dallas. Even put up two quarters to play around of pool with him. He was always there supporting other bands like bugs henderson and john nitzinger.
This was great. I'm a HUGE Freddie King fan. In my mind, he's the best there ever was.... it's cool to see a guitarist opinion of him. Reaffirms what I'm hearing
One of my favorite live performances. Freddie beat the notes out of his cherry red Gibson. If you can't feel this one...you may actually be dead. David Maxwell on the keys is so sick on the video too...
Having watched Freddie many times and playing with cats that were in his band, let me promise you that the snare hits and accents are all part of the show. It was the standard deal. It is an embellishment of what works on stage in a blues band.
God, I sure hope I get to hear the Heaven's Blues Band Freddie, B.B. & Albert are a part of....I cut my teeth on Freddie playing around Tulsa like Cain's Ballroom. His first recording venture/touring was w/ our beloved Leon Russell; Russell put Freddie living in a house nextdoor to his Shelter Records at 3rd & Trenton while recording. Life was so good!! '71 & '72 were EPIC years for all those guys, especially Freddie King. Long may his music be played loud & proud!!!
For people not familiar with the BLACK AMERICAN MUSICAL TRADITION, he taking you to Church! What I mean is, he's pacing himself and using the same cadence that a preacher would. He is even using the CALL AND RESPONSE of the Church. If you were in Church, the old preachers would encourage the congregation so they could preach the sermon together. Freddie is encouraging the audience to sing it with him. I appreciate the fact you're paying homage and appreciation to some of the original masters. Great Video. Great Reaction.
One of the three Kings of the blues! You gotta do Eric Clapton. Old Love off 24 Nights Groaning the Blues off from the cradle Or anyone of the live gems available.
I regard Freddie as the funkiest of the blues masters. Personally my favorite. And dare I say the best singer of the 3 kings being BB, Albert, Freddie. For my taste I prefer Freddie's style. There all legends though.
This and ain't no body's business is the reason is got inspired to learn guitar. Granted I still don't know how to play. But God damn it, every time I listen I get this rush... On a blues ballad. Lol
Guys like Freddie King remind us why "rhythm" is before "blues" The man-est music there is always puts rhythm first and the feeling follows, as far as my definition "man music" goes. Can never get enough.
“Lock up your woman and your gin...here comes Freddie King!” Definitely the baddest of all the Kings! Can’t thank you enough Michael...you’ve made my day❤️
I never never never get tired of Freddie King. So much raw power, feeling and emotion. Metal thumb and finger picks just dig out that sound that just tears your guts out. Big thanks on this one. Cheers from Texas. 🤠
Michael, thanks so much for keeping the spirit of the Blues masters alive on your channel , too. It´s a treat watching you react on it, plus super cool mentioning Anthony for his superb work on this vids!
Add that band...they were in super sync and feeling it. I must admit that the blues bores me sometimes, the blues is predictable. Freddie wasn't predictable, he owned all his songs and he found great musicians. I can listen to Freddie all the time. Ronnie Earl is another one, blues guitar with soul (if you don't know him).
It's so refreshing to see an adult reacting this way. He's like a child unwrapping christmas presents and showing all his friends the cools things his new toys do.
There are 3 videos I may have watched over 100 times Freddy King have you ever loved a woman, Albert King pretty woman and Gary BB Coleman the sky is crying
Freddie King, more than any other player, was the true ambassador of the slamming blues sound to the mainstream rock crowd. I would say he was even more influential than Hendrix in this regard. FK is really where Page, Clapton, Angus Young, Billy Gibbons and a host of other white-boy 70's hard rock blues guitarists got their screaming attack sound. He was definitely a force to be reckoned with!
I've watched this video at least once a year since I came across it, Freddie King was so ahead of his time in terms of phrasing. You can hear Clapton, Page, and Beck *really* loved his playing.
After each of those phrases its like he just banged it up everyone’s arm in the audience and we are all so mad high and he does the movt in time with the crack of the snare its soooo good!!
The power of Albert, the taste of B.B. And a great voice to boot. Way, WAY under-appreciated. Thank you for featuring him, a real hero of mine growing up.
Freddie “bleeding “ the blues as only he could…..a more pure sound would be difficult if not impossible to copy….a wonderful homage to , for me, the greatest bluesman ever. You can see where the great Mike Bloomfield learnt his trade from. Thanks Micheal …..greetings from the UK.

Same Old Blues is my favorite Freddie song. It's seriously fun to play over with all the great changes. Don Nix wrote it and Goin' Down. Both are great. Freddie rules.
Love the enthusiasm Michael! He does make that guitar sound like crying and gives me the chills. Can anyone else agree that Freddie's shirt is awesome too I need one of those!
This is my favorite Freddie King performance. I can't count how many times I've watched and listened to this and David Maxwell on piano is so good ! Awesome to see you react to this. Thank you

So clean. A great band behind a great guitarist and everything is right!
One of the performances (along with BB at Cook Country Jail and Albert King “Live” ) I first learned blues soloing to. Simply epic.
One of his videos, he breaks a string early on and changes guitars and never misses a beat.
IMHO, after being an avid blues fan for over 50 years , I’ve long considered that this is THE greatest blues performance OF ALL TIME.
