Dude, as a parent of an addict, I'm happy and I'm proud of you. Like you, she got out, and I can still see the beautiful smiles of the ones she knew that didn't. Stay strong brother.
Me too, man. Me too... I am so grateful. For my life and for what I've learned. I wouldn't change it either if I could. It made me who I am today, in good and bad ways. I'm glad your baby got out too.
Me too. Kid brother lost to heroin. 'Every junkies like a setting sun' sums it up. Beautiful, but doomed to dissappear. And the worst part, as I'm sure you've learned, there is nothing you can do.
Lost my Brother, Neil Young fan & guitarist... My brother turned me on to Neil Young with this album, and it holds a special place in my heart. Nice to hear you're reviewing tracks of this album, thanks! ✌️❤️🤟🥁
Addiction, a fruitless and desperate search for something that, we don't realise, is already within us in abundance. It leaves a trail of sorrow and never lives up to its promise. What a song! Glad you saw the truth eventually.
as a former needle user and a recovering addict, this song hits hard. Been clean and sober since 1990, fortunately. But a lot of folks I knew died from the disease, including a very close friend. Eternal vigilance is needed
I'm glad you survived as well, my friend. Most succumb to the needle madness. It definitely drove me crazy for years. I couldn't do anything BUT an IV speedball. I mean it's literally what every waking moment came to be about. Such a sad life. I'm sorry for your losses. We must carry on their memory, because sadly no one else will.
The last line kills me, even after hearing this song probably hundreds of times. I made it out, many friends did not, several are still struggling. I’m grateful to be here and glad you are, too. Peace and love to you, brother.
Lee, should have mentioned this before, but I greatly admire your honesty, openness and insightful reactions. Please stay on the wagon….you seem to be a fine young man with much to give.
Wow man thank you so much... that literally just gave me the biggest smile. I truly appreciate it. I definitely will be. I've given up too much already. I'm done giving everything away for nothing. 3 years is a long time... but it's a drop in the bucket compared to where it will be when I'm done:)
Just came out around the same time as John Prine's "Sam, Stone" with the line "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose" ... Both songs spoke volumes about what I saw going on around me
Yeah there are very, VERY few old dopeheads. Some of them just last forever for some reason (I've met a couple) but most don't make it out. I feel lucky. So, so lucky.
Neil lost two good friends to overdoses - Danny Whitten of Crazy Horse and a roadie named Bruce Berry (whom he recalls in the song 'Tonight's the Night). Whitten's addiction had made him impossible for Neil to rely on in the Horse so he gave him bus fare to go back to LA. Whitten ODd days later. Like most of Neil's best songs, he writes from the depths of his own experiences.
You definitely should check out the first Crazy Horse album (self-titled). Danny Whitten was a hell of a songwriter and singer in his own right, and Nils Lofgren also adds two great songs of his own on it.
It's so fitting how this song ends without resolving itself, and that it's way too short... Congrats on trashing your points and living a more satisfactory life. Much respect!
Addiction...im a 71 year old man and i have seen a lot done a lot. Addiction is always in the next room doing pushups just waiting for you to have a week moment. You are so fucking strong dude, accept it be proud of your accompaniments. Its a road with lots of bumps and ruts. Tiers are a sign your still human and you care, something to be proud of my friend. Your daughters will admire you as mine has. shes 42 now and tells me so. Yours will I'm sure. Hang in there, its worth it.
along with "Old Man", "Razor Love" and "After The Gold Rush", these songs loaded with emotion and regret still put a lump in my throat, even after decades.
Such an honest reaction, thank you. I’m glad you made it out alive, and learned what you did about the value of life, especially your life. And now you’re a dad! There’s your biggest reward right there. Take care.
I'm also a parent of a recovering addict. It broke my heart to see your pain! I've seen that look of regret, guilt all rolled up in a recurring depression, in my son's eyes. Be proud of yourself, forgive yourself. Reach out when you need it. I'm so sorry for your pain but encouraged that you are through the hard part and heading for recovery. Wishing you peace man.
Beautiful heart-felt reaction, thank you for sharing. I've always had a different take on the line, "BUT every junkie's like a setting sun." Yes, the light goes out, but a setting sun also comes up again. And for Neil it came back up in his music and his tribute to lost friends.
I am SO glad you're here with us, Lee. Congratulations on getting out of that hell. I don't think you should fret about wasted time. We all do that, I think. And what you do from now on is what's important.
Short, Sad, full of sorrow, and thought. Gets the message across very clearly in so few words. A very powerful song.... "Hand of Doom" by Black Sabbath also hits home in the same way. The same subject, a lot more descriptive, and a bit longer, but another strong message surrounded by a song.
My ex husband died from a bad batch of heroin. He left our daughter without a father at 27 years old. His drug use devastated both of us. He started when he was about 12. He grew up on the mean streets of Miami in the 1960s. His mom had left him when he was a baby. He was born addicted to heroin because his mom, a nurse, was a heroin addict. A very heartbreaking song. Neil is a great songwriter and singer.
This song and its sad and true meaning are also beautiful as well. Neil Young is an artist who writes from his heart and experiences in his life. I have personal relations with this song, and I am sure many people can also relate to it. No one can blame themselves for falling into this spiral because it turns into a sickness, but it is a suckiness that you can overcome if you're lucky enough to survive it, and for those who have, or for that matter even the ones that didn't GOD BLESS you all. I may be getting out of content here because this channel is more about the music so I'll end here on a solemn note by just saying thank you Lee for creating this channel and for being the person that you are. This song was definitely worth the listen to those who have never heard it before
Thank you, bruce. I appreciate it. 🙏 I'm trying my best to be a better man every day and some days I fail. But I'm still clean at least and still alive on those days so I'm gonna keep on trucking. Thank YOU for being you and for being here.
A devastatingly great song. It's in the same vein (😮) as Needle Of Death by Bert Jansch, which also confronts the grief of parents and family in these situations. I lost someone very close to me to drugs and mental illness (chicken or egg?), so I can barely listen to it, but it's also a raw classic. I'm genuinely happy for you that you're staying clean now.
Glad you made it. Stay strong. When this song came out, I was still living in Chicago, growing up. Many of the older young men who graduated before me went to Viet Nam and came home with habits... 10 years after I graduated, I can't even tell you how many were lost. During my last six months in Chicago, 6 friends were lost. My ex husband is an addict, sometimes ex addict. I went through 5 different treatment processes with him. One year programs, 90 day programs, 60 and 30 days programs, years of AA, NA and Alanon, YEARS. When it looked like #6 was getting ready to happen, I finally had to save myself, remove myself from the cycle. Heroin is the worst, at least it used to be.
Yeah the story is so sad... poor Neil. Regret is the worst. My mom took a life insurance policy out on me. It's rough to know that to this day. I feel so had for what I put her through. Lost her husband and almost lost her only son too. I couldn't let it happen.
Lost my roommate to an overdose in September. Yet another beautiful life snuffed out by opiates.. Addiction is a killer that never gives up. 50 years later we are still losing friends. So glad you have left them behind.
👍I’d rather be around souls like you who’ve seen life and it’s complexities than pretentious fools. Stay clean, find good friends that will keep you grounded. Find your comfort zone. Don’t forget to ask for guidance when it’s starts to wear you down.❤️
The only thing that matters is where you're at now Lee. You should feel proud son. I know many growing up in the 60s and 70s who never make it through their heroin addiction alive. I myself have been clean from alcohol for 23 yrs now and love having back control of my life. Great reaction! Keep'em coming 👍
Now that's what I call a song reaction video. The music hitting you right there and then you telling us exact how it affects you and what it makes you feel. I'm recovering from alcohol and cocaine abuse. One day at a time. I wish you all the best brother. Take it easy. I used to work for Glenn Hughes a few years ago and I truly believe his mantra which is "Music is the healer"
"A little part of it in everyone" - so much pain to go around for each junkie. Thanks for tackling this one. For a first person account, you could check out The Velvet Underground's "Heroine" and "Waiting for the Man."
Steely Dan " Time out of Mind" Gaucho Album. Lyrics and the upbeat "happy" melody do a great job hiding that the song is about Heroin. The words are very cryptic in that one.
A buddy had a Neil Young/Crazyhorse tribute band he called "Lazyhorse". I would do soundboard and recording chores and I could not possibly tell you how many times I heard them play this one. The man is underrated if anything.
This is about his roadie, his best friend who overdosed. Lee, the emotions on your face…please know how so many of us love you. Don’t ever go back there. I will chain you to my body if I have to. 😘
@@L33Reacts I’m glad! You mean so much to so many people. I told my daughter when she was a teen that if she ever tried hard drugs, I would simply handcuff to me. I’d do the same to you if you even thought about going back. But your will seems so sincere and strong. Keep the faith. Life only gets better!
Don’t think Neil was a big user but it was all around him, especially his band member Danny Whitten, whose death hit him hard. The Velvet Underground was the band that did the really vivid songs about junk, mainly “Waiting for the Man”, “White Light White Heat”, “Sister Ray” and “Heroin”. Bit disturbing but powerful songs - the roots of punk and indie rock. Somehow Lou Reed survived it too. Really like your channel and reactions.
On the album, I love how it goes right to the next song WORDS, the album has two songs with an orchestra, and the great song Alabama, which Skynyrd addressed, a harmonica classic starts the album, we'd play and sing it on certain nights.
Thank you. I tried for years to get it but it didn't click until I left the "program" and had a child. Eventually you hit a point were it just doesn't even pop in your head anymore.
You are such a cool dude. You’re smart, Articulate, and you have empathy. So glad you got off the needle. You are too good for that. I see bigger and better things for you in the future. You have a daughter to take care of and I know you love her. Life is hard. If you ever need to take the edge off of life, smoke a joint. Listen to some good music. And with your channel you have a support group and many people to talk to you if you ever think about going down that road again, but hopefully not. I’m 65 years old and if you ever needed somebody to talk to you I would definitely be there for you. God bless you young man. You have a lot of life to live yet. I know one day you are going to be very successful. I can just feel it. Take care brother❤
You got a sub, appreciate your honesty and articulating truth the way you did, takes a real one to be like that, we need more of it in this world. And its great to connect it with something pure and beautiful like music. Have to find that place in life where we can embrace being "uncomfortable" to truly transform - I don't succeed often, but I know that's what is the path. Thanks for creating this my friend.
Without a doubt the most chilling anti-drug lyric I have ever heard is from the song "Every Day" by Steve Hackett (after leaving Genesis). Like this poignant track, the Hackett piece has uplifting music, almost anthemic and inspiring, while the lyrics paint a whole 'nother story. This was great. I'm so thankful that you escaped before death showed up. The grace of God....
Neil Young waS never a hard core addict. "the lyrics describe the effects of heroin addiction on musicians in Young’s inner circle, including his Crazy Horse bandmate and close friend Danny Whitten, who died the same year the song was released. "
You are so reflective and honest. There is a lot of intelligence and insight in your reactions and they are so authentic. I am glad you were able to overcome your demons. You have so much to offer!😊
I never did H, but back in the late 70s and early 80s I was doing a lot of coke. I remember the day when I realized that I and my wife were derailing our future. I flushed what we had down the toilet and haven’t touched it since. The siren call still hits me occasionally. Can’t imagine how hard it would be to stop the harder stuff. Good on you Lee. They say, “what’s the first thing you want after doing a line? Answer: another line.” God bless all those that have gotten off any of this stuff. RIP to the rest. 35+ years later, still married with kids and grandkids, I thank God I was able to stop. I am enjoying your journey any wish only the best for you and yours.
I recently lost two nieces who were two of three sisters who were on heroin. The youngest of the three was the first to go and no one had any idea she was using until she overdosed. Then the oldest of the three committed suicide because she felt no one loved her anymore. It tore my heart out because I loved these girls so much. They were so sweet and I'd get up in the middle of the night to go get them when they would call me crying. It was such a sad situation. It makes you feel so helpless that you can't do anything but beg them to get help.
In the turmoil of not knowing when you would be drafted into the service for a war half way around the world the death of 3 great leaders , the struggle for civil rights, war protests , the at times physical push back from most in the nation , music was a refuge for many . congratulations on your new path .. keep on
"Country Girl" is a song Neil did with Crosby, Stills, and Nash on the "Deja Vu" album. Doesn't get mentioned much, kind of one of those hidden gems I think.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. My mother quit cigarettes cold turkey the day she realized she was pregnant. You and her both show the strength we have in ourselves. Sometimes it takes something like knowing you have a child reliant on you to finally find that inner strength. If you like songs about heavy topics, not usually drugs but everything else, I highly recommended checking out Phil Ochs. Not the most technically talented artist, or the greatest singer, but for my money there isn’t a better lyricist.
Dude, as a parent of an addict, I'm happy and I'm proud of you. Like you, she got out, and I can still see the beautiful smiles of the ones she knew that didn't. Stay strong brother.

I'm a brother of an addict who is gone. Just shows that it destroys entire families. Do stay strong, you are lucky as is your entire family.
Me too. Kid brother lost to heroin. 'Every junkies like a setting sun' sums it up. Beautiful, but doomed to dissappear. And the worst part, as I'm sure you've learned, there is nothing you can do.
And 'milk blood, to keep from running out' shows that Neil knows of what he speaks.

Takes guts to talk about it. You're a breath of fresh air as a reactor and a human. Keep going brother!
Neil did lose bandmates to drugs, very sad. This song is from the heart.

A hidden Neil gem is "Powderfinger" - a great story and loud, fuzzy, thicc electric guitar licks.

"He knows". Exactly. I love that it's a song of few words, but saying so much. One of my favorite songs to play on an acoustic.
Makes me tear up every time. Such a simple powerful piece of music.
Comes A Time is a beautiful song. Neil’s music shows compassion. Love you bro. Your luck (hard work) is our luck because we got you. Thank you.

I'm aware now. Thank you.

You are so reflective and honest. There is a lot of intelligence and insight in your reactions and they are so authentic. I am glad you were able to overcome your demons. You have so much to offer!😊
There was another line he wrote but never added:Every junkies like a setting sun; THERE'LL ALWAYS BE ANOTHER ONE.
Nothing but props to you!!!!
Love the way he really digs into the strings when playing this.
Funny that you say “ Like a Hurricane” when that’s another Good Song By Neil Young😁👍🏻
Haha that's awesome. I had no idea lol perfect timing
It's the unfinished song. Chilling.
Your a handsome young Man with Your whole life ahead of You, now You can go live Your best life!
Cinnamon Girl....Neil Young. One of the killer riffs of all time.
Congratulations on overcoming your addiction. I think your growing self awareness will serve you well.
Your reaction was very moving.....stay strong.
Let your light shine my friend 😎
