DeWitt is used to seeing his teams value going up by $200-250 MM a year. He took over before the 1996 season getting the team for $150MM ($75MM after selling a lot of the parking lots). They are now worth $2.5BB. Thats a growth in value of 33 fold in 30 years thanks in great part to one of the best and most loyal fan bases in MLB. The team has also had a great winning % over the past 20 years but they have suffered a lot over the past decade due to some very poor investments in team payroll and even worse attention to minor league player development. DeWitt would be wise to sell the team, pocket his profits and let someone else with deep pockets who wants to own a winner take over. I say this as a disapointed fan who has loved this team since 1951. Frankly, I’m tired of watching them shovel buckets of money at shaky players with weak career stats like Fowler who was a DL queen for 5 of the 6 years prior to us signing him to an $82MM 5 year deal, M. Carpenter who had 1 very good year out of 10, Contreras - who had a career average of spending nearly 50 gamesa season on the IL before we got him, Jason Heyward, who never had a good year batting before or after the Cards overpaid for him. These were incredibly poor deals. We need to face facts - our front office and owner have been asleep at the switch for over a decade. We had one good manager leading up to that in LaRussa and one in Shildt who got fired because he told the Front Office and owner the painful truth. Matheny was a good guy but a weak manager and Marmol brings nothing to the table besides being a yes man to Moz. Now we are seeing the results of this with a frustrated fan base that is starting to vote with their feet. Thats not going to change either without a lot of changes at the top.
Hey JD; I think the Cards will be giving guys already in the organization opportunities at first base. I don’t see them doing much on the free agent market. If they do anything I look for them to be as cheap as they can about it, both in money and years. It seems clear to me they want to play their youth. You do a great job keeping the content coming. I think Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras could be considered premium... there is elite level like Ohtani, Soto, deGrom, Trea Turner etc. then premium in my eyes. But that's just verbiage really, you may feel different.
You watched some of the moves Cards made. Let's make a couple of changes to make it look like we are trying to win. No you don't stop being a fan after 40 years but you should as hell don't have the passion.. Great memories & history. You want to see a real effort to win or see new prospects with a chance to make an impact not get traded for an old horse. Great show JD, an old school voice when baseball was fun to watch.
If the Cardinals are cutting payroll, I really don't see them signing any big FA players. The FA type player I could see them signing is an affordable RH corner OF that can hit LHP well. Just in case Walker doesn't perform up to expectations. I think at 1B they'll go with the Burleson and Baker combo perhaps. If they get any pitching it would be through trade most likely in my opinion.
I think it's the front office thinking that we could turn around a bad season from last year with what we put on the field this year need to go out and get people that will make this team better Anthony Santander, Pete Alonso, Corbin burns is the players we should go get.
Why does everyone talk about resigning JACK , We had him and got rid of him for a reason, his attitude was bad at times and he would be the same bad pitcher we had before, I’m sure he definitely wouldn’t want to come back

The chance of Flaherty returning to St. Louis is less than zero. Even if the Dodgers decide to let him walk, which I seriously doubt, there is absolutely no way he would ever want to return to the a Cardinals.
Arenado obviously it’s not a leader in the clubhouse nor is Goldschmidt. The younger players nowadays need leaders and we need a manager who exemplifies this
For them to say they put too much into the major league team is BS. They are 12th in payroll. Their problem has been bad contracts and poor drafting along with very bad coaching. With that said, they were only 6 or 7 games from the playoffs. They are in rebuild mode but won't admit it.
Not to poo on the off-season fantasizing, but we have zero chance of signing any of these guys. We will trade away at least one of our best players, maybe two or three; if we sign anyone, it's likely to be a rp. And not an expensive closer. I thought he managed the bullpen and starters VERY well, but I wasn't so keen on some of lineup decisions, i.e. keeping Winn way down in the order for so long and leaving Goldy near the top for so long. Personally I don't think they will sign anyone like that. I'm thinking they'll just go with what they've got and try to get the bats going like they should be. Carlos Santana would be the closest possible signing that I could see. He'll probably only cost 5-6 mil/yr for a 1-2 year contract, solid 1B, good enough bat, Veteran leadership (😂). But until we see what happens this winter, we won't even be able to make an educated guess, although I don't rule out finishing 4th in the division after the Brewers, Cubs and Reds (I think Tito is gonna have a HUGE impact on that team).

I don't think bringing him back would be a popular move by the FO. Plus, many fans have known all along that he did not want to be here. He's a California momma's boy.

The 2024 MLB Winter Meetings in Dallas in December will give us a clue what the Cardinals will do. IMHO 2025 World Series thinking is unrealistic.
