I currently work as a Patient care technician/ CNA and want to become a surgical technologist but want to start off as a sterile processing tech and see if it’s worth it.

The job descriptions between sterile processing tech and surg tech are distinctly different. While identifying instruments is the only common task, a sterile processing tech must sterilize instruments for surgeries, whereas a surg tech must maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery. If you're interested in pursuing a career in sterile processing, I suggest you use your position to network with different departments and ask relevant questions to gain a better understanding of different positions.

Thanks for posting this video. I'm a veterinary assistant working hard to get out of the field and into something less dangerous that pays better. Veterinary assistants handle the "sterile processing" within our clinics, but it's a considerably less intense process than in human medicine. At my previous position I took on a lot of the responsibilities and care of our instruments and equipment, as well as teaching others how to do it and putting together training material for future employees, and it was something I took a lot of pride in. I just registered for a local college course in sterile processing and my fingers are crossed that this works out for me. Your suggestions for interview questions were very helpful.

Why did you choose this profession and not surgical technician? Is it because its more behind the scenes? I am looking into going into ST but then I saw this job profession as well so I am torn, I like the body parts and guts and the fact youre helping with surgery but i also am dreading the day you get belittled by a nurse or a doc lol I also tend to be shy and like to work alone sometimes (i was a lab assistant and loved it) so im torn!

You can always get started with SP and transition to a surg tech. That way you can grow you reputation at your hospital, and you already have a huge head start when starting the surg tech program.

To increase your chances of getting hired, I recommend applying for job postings that include the keywords "certification preferred", or require you to obtain a certification within a specific timeframe. Additionally, don't hesitate to reach out to the department manager and inquire about opportunities for students. It shows initiative and can help you stand out as a candidate.

Hi! Some hospitals/clinics do hire people with no experience (it's nice to hire people who don't come with bad habits they learned somewhere else, so sell yourself that you are completely open to learning/embracing your interviewing facility's methods!). Getting certified usually requires observation hours in a clinical setting, so when you have your cert, you will indeed have some actual experience under your belt.
