    To those who say that anything that can be done with a polarizer filter can be done in Photoshop: Good luck trying to achieve the same results when doing tide pool work or any work when shooting through water! I guess the question becomes: Are you a photographer or a Photoshop editor? I prefer to uses photographic tools in the field and then use Photoshop to prepare my images for display.

    These days, with high shutter speeds and image stabilization available in almost every newer camera, you can essentially leave a high quality circular polarizer on your lenses about 80% to 90% of the time when shooting outside and even inside sometimes. At most it might cost you 1 stop or so, but I find the convenience to be well worth it. When I first started photography as a hobby, I loved using all sorts of attachments to enhance my photographs, but now, 35 years later, the less I have to mess with the camera (except for focus and exposure, of course), the better. Oh, and I don't use Photoshop either, except on rare and very specific occasions. It's a wonderful product but I think that not depending on it forces you to use your best creative abilities before taking the shot. To each, his own, I suppose.

    Question: Can you describe the difference between the circular polarizer and the other type? How are they used and why?
    Thanks!

    • @BandH
      @BandH  8 років тому +3

      +GS Wing Nut Circular polarizers and linear polarizers are different in a few ways. Linear polarizers should only be used with film cameras and only block certain orientations of plane polarized light. For example, at one orientation, it may allow the passage of vertically polarized light, but if rotated 90 degrees, it would allow the polarization of horizontally polarized light. This differs from a circular polarizer, which can be used with digital and film cameras, and is made of two elements - a linear polarizer, and a quarter wave plate. The quarter wave plate is fused to the back of the linear polarizer and oriented in a way that makes the light hitting the filter circularly polarized. This is important, as the intensity of reflection from partially reflecting surfaces is dependent on the angle of polarization, and the partially reflecting surfaces includes the mirror inside of your camera. While older film cameras use a fully reflecting mirror, newer SLRs and digital cameras use a partially reflecting mirror, so the intensity of transmitted light will affect the meter reading. When you use a circular polarizer, the polarized light is reflected with intensity that is independent from the angle of the filter, so metering errors are eliminated. |Heather|

    whats the difference between B+W polarizers and non B+W filters?
    and is multi resistant coating necassary

    • @BandH
      @BandH  6 років тому

      B+W is a brand name. The difference between B+W filters and filters from other manufacturers would be their proprietary designs and/or construction of the filters. The use of a polarizer filter from any brand would be relatively similar, as they are all designed to polarize light in the same manner. However, each brand may have different types or number of coatings depending on the specific filter line, the material and thickness/thinness of the filter ring, and/or other properties of the specific filter design.
      Multi-coatings are not a necessity. They are a feature, and often recommended, but it is not a necessity (the filter will work without coatings or with a single coating). Coatings on filters are designed to reduce flare, glare, and internal reflections that can reduce contrast, sharpness, or image quality. Other coatings can strengthen the glass, or can make it harder for water and oil to adhere to the filter. As stated, multi-coatings are not a necessity, and there are filters without coatings, but they are often sought after for their beneficial properties and benefits to the overall image quality and/or ease of cleaning the filter.

      I would suggest looking at a circular polarizer from B+W or Hoya: they make some of the better filters on the market. I would also suggest looking at a multicoated filter as they are less likely to cause ghosting or flare. That being said, we would need to know the exact lens you are using to make specific recommendations. You could send us an email with this information and we could respond with some recommendations. *Christina* AskUA-cam@bhphoto.com

    Opppsss....my mistake. What about using a lens hood with the pola filter, at the same time? Anyone....

    • @BandH
      @BandH  4 роки тому

      It is possible to use a circular polarizer with a lens hood attached. Some lenses offer hood with a retractable window in order to control the filter. Other lenses like long telephoto primes would have a circular polarizer that can be inserted towards the back of the lens with a dial to control it. Otherwise, lens with none of these functions would require the adjustment of the filter to be made before attaching the hood.

    Hihave a question about ND variable filter and the Polarizer.
    ND variable Filter reduces steps of light, but it neither cut nor control undesired reflections and haze. In the contrary, the polarizer will reduce two step of light as the max, but will not substitute ND. Combining them could make an improvement under some circumstances.
    I know that if stacking the ND in front of the pola won't work.
    Primordially, this is a technique used in photography. But It could work for filmmaking only under some outdoor circumstances.
    Would you agree?

    • @L11-Studios

      I think he meant they CAN ALSO be used with auto, since he says linear ones are strictly for manual use

    • @unalx
      @unalx 6 років тому

      cpl were made for auto because the metering system for autofocus (in dslr and most cameras) uses a beam splitter that also polarizes light. Cpl is actually a linear polarizer with a quarter wavelength film behind it, so light passing though ends with a circular polarization.

    Do I need a ND if I have a Polarizer?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  4 роки тому +1

      Personally, I think you would need both (depending on your shooting needs), but that depends on a few factors, such as your ambient light level, the amount of filtration or density correction you need, and the polarizer filter you own. The answer is "yes" and "no;" - I'll explain below.
      .
      Different polarizer filters have different amounts of density reduction. For typical shooters, they most often prefer a polarizer filter with the least amount of light loss so they retain the most options in terms of setting their exposure. Most polarizer filters reduce light input into the camera by between 1.3 stops to 3 stops of light. For this reason, they _can_ be used as a neutral density filter. However, you also have to realize that the amount of light that is lost by using filter depends on the position to which the filter is rotated, and if you are photographing a scene, rotating the filter changes the amount of filtration; both happen concurrently.
      .
      As such, if you are using the filter as a polarizer filter, you would not be able to accurately set the amount of polarization you wanted for your scene while simultaneously dialing in the amount of density reduction you achieved. Conversely, if you are using the filter as a neutral density filter, the setting needed for your desired density reduction may not be adequate to reduce reflections and/or adjust contrast/saturation of the scene you are photographing, or you may have uneven polarization across the scene (especially if using a wide angle lens).
      .
      The best bet is if you need polarization, use a polarizer filter. If you need density reduction, then purchase a neutral density filter or a variable ND filter. If you need both, purchase both. A polarizer *_CAN_* do both, but I don’t think it *_SHOULD_* do both (or be used for both at the same time - use the polarizer filter for its intended purpose).
      .
