That's the most cars I've seen at SFJ in a long time. And the next VRF Camera to see her should be Fort Worth Tower 55 Sunday AM (I'm going to drive over Saturday to see her on display in Fort Worth, and either might chase it coming into town Friday night or leaving town Sunday morning). I've seen 844 and Challenger on the move multiple times, I've seen 4014's sisters in at least 3 museums, but never seen her under her own power in person, so this will be a treat.
Its hard to believe I use to climb on 4014 when it was an outdoor static display in a remote corner of the LA county Fair Grounds. Sometimes, I was the only one on it. I didn't know it was just sleeping... The train museum kept the headlamp on during business hours.
Something I just noticed about the diesel with 4014. Its trucks are painted silver to match the rest of the cars. Is it part of the heritage fleet now or something?
After the infamous sideswiping incident on CSX in 1992 with the 3985, Steve Lee swore that he would NEVER allow his steam engines east of the Mississippi again. And he didn’t.
Best view was on the pedestrian brige at union station. It went underneath it, dropped off the freight, backed up and then finally pulled into the station
@@curtislynch8189 your ignorance is palpable. The railroads move more cargo, freight and daily essential items of our 24/7 lifestyle than any other transportation media at a quarter of the cost of any other land base transport. If the railroads were to just stop, countries around the world would fall into chaos in a couple of days.
@@curtislynch8189 and an interesting side bar, all the class 1's are budgeting millions of dollars to refit and rebuild their EMD products while scrapping hundreds and hundreds or GE Junkamotives. You really outta study a bit more railroad as you are clearly way out of touch with reality.
I'm a lady railfan who saw Big Boy in Des Moines in 2019. He is without a doubt the king and epitome of all steam locomotives. I never saw so many people with tears on their cheeks just looking at Big Boy in amazement; grown men included. It was indeed a memorable day and then some. Also a day of widespread smiles with a happy, party-like atmosphere.😊👏👏💯❤🚂❗❗
What a pitch-perfect day for a steamer. Rail Pro 1. Does she burn wood or coal? 2. Where does she take on water? 3. Why did the oldies make the sky black but when they roll today the plumes are almost clear?
He got converted to oil. The water and oil tanks are in the tender, that black wagon that goes right behind him. And about the smoke, the fact that he runs on oil might be a factor, but also, it has to do with the fireman, that's the person in charge of maintaining the fire. Smoke indicates that the fuel isn't being burned properly. Back in the day, it was very hard to maintain a good fuel ratio, because of coal. But now, it's stilk is hard, but much more posible to get a nice clean combustion, because of the oil fuel being much much easier to control than coal.
As built, she burned coal. Has been changed over to oil. She takes on water where ever she stops. The two yellow cars right behind the tender are auxiliary tenders that are full of water. When they stop, they will either hook up to a fire hydrant, or contact a company that fills swimming pools. The early engines where not very efficient so they had a lot of smoke. Also, some times the fireman would add fuel to make the engines smoke a lot for the photographer. It's more dramatic that way.
@@LeoLeo-qo7yw Thanks. Man, I sure wish I could see those dramatic black and white billows. I've only seen them in photos and old B&W westerns. Sure looks cool to see all that smoke in the distance and hear the faint whistle. Heavenly back in the day.
They are pulling them to help them stop. They have sand in them. When you saw Bigboy in Milwaukee, what was it pulling? Did it have the full office car train?
@@davidedington5426 I read elsewhere the hoppers were to help with braking; would not be used when they had the full complement of UP passenger cars etc.
The sound of the whistle, up close and in person. It's not a sound you hear. It's a sound that you feel. It will emboss your soul and resonate in your bones. If 4014 comes within 500 miles, make the trip to see it. To hear it.
@@asherblok3007 Yes they could have and it would look better. The problem is, UP doesn't own a lot of passenger cars. Chances are the office cars they have were in use somewhere else.

The diesel they have on for Head Power and braking is 4015 - how’d I miss that before now??
It great to see the BIG BOY 4014 back. It's a monster!
Now THAT is a train engine. ❤️
She may have spent her life in the west but that girl is a native New Yorker at heart !
I will see it in Denton TX friday, and in Fort Worth TX Saturday.

Glad to see big boy running again
Chills and happy tears EVERY time 🎉🤘
Back in the day, when they said "running long hood forward", it really meant something.
611 and big boy this has been an awesome year
was amazing watching it roll into town. But every stop today to get photo's was straight into the sun. Hope the return trip works out better.
I caught the big boy 4014 in Lawrence Kansas!!

So is 4014 only touring with freight equipment? No passenger excursion?
Passenger excursion in New Orleans.

I haven't heard anything about that engine in a while, is the Centennial still operational, or does it need an overhaul?
Hope it passes a cam somewhere while running at line speed.
I saw this big boy today
Does anyone know why they are pulling the hoppers? Or what is in them. When I saw it come through Milwaukee few years ago they didn't have them
Looking at those old hoppers I can imagine Big Boy has re-connected with old rolling stock.
Well, Big Boy originally only hauled freight. So, likely a callback
Probably for added weight since she’s not pulling the usual full UP train, but they did have the UP car the “Howard Fogg” and a caboose!!

To add breaking power. All the hoppers are at least half full of sand and with the weight of the hoppers, the breaking power goes up.
