I grew up in the early 80’s and 90’s and we were strictly Chicano style mixed with a little swagger coming that we were City slickers (East Oakland-San Fran) I grew up in East Oakland and lived in Union City for about 3 years. I got along with most homeboys from all over the East Bay and yes it’s a survival of the fittest out here. The game has changed drastically since those days and am blessed to have survived that era. Much respect to all our Raza that’s still striving for better life. ✊🏽 Saludos from £.$.O- T£L’$
The East Bay Area has the most multi-Latino population than anywhere in Califas. You got Boriqua’s, Katracho’s, Nicoya’s, Chapine’s, Salvi’s, Cubanos, Hondureños, all through the Bay Area. I think that’s why they moved a little more towards the hip hop style more than with the traditional Chicano style. I think Campo Ramos Locos was a predominately Puerto Rican Varrio. Hayward has a lot of Nicaraguans, while SF has a lot of Central Americans, Oakland has a good amount of Colombians. And you know that Upstaters also had a large amount of Salvi’s and Nicoyas in their hoods. It’s all Latino mixed. The Valley, The Coast, North Bay Area (Santa Rosa area) South Bay Area (San Jose area) were more of the traditional Chicano Varrio lifestyle
The Mission in SF has always been a Chicano neighborhood full of Mexicans…Not until recently did central americans come in and copy our style….Oakland is mostly Mexicans and so is San Mateo county
To me it seems like there’s just way more competition to deal with in the Bay Area in general in comparison to the South Bay-Central Coast-Valley. No time to relax over there at all, everything moves a lot faster. With that being said, I can understand why they move the way they move over there. Shout out to the East Bay, they’re about their hustle.
Worked with 4-5 decotos for years at a Fremont warehouse. All old Gs 40+. They were good dudes. Kept the days enjoyable. Most of them were sober. Other than that growing up in the east bay was a different animal. I agree with you on the rest. Drugs killed and ruined most of the people and things I knew out there.
