  • I've been obsessed with running over the last 15 years. As a sports scientist, I read a hell of LOT and I've read 107 books about running and training and I wanted to share with you what actually works.
In this video, I'm going to break down all the things I've learned down into a simple 6-step framework.
These are the six steps that we've personally used to help over 10 000 athletes who've trained with us here at Coach Parry using our training frameworks. I've also personally used them to improve my running.
If you just follow these six steps they will move the needle for your own running performance …
I also want to share with you the 1 BIG thing that people just don’t understand… which almost every single one of these books touches on.
When you're ready, we'd love to help you become a better runner.

Thank you ! I run 4 times a week and I need those 3 days for recovery. 80/20 is a great method and I also try to walk between interwalls, not slow running.

Nice one. I've learnt the same through years of experience. I will say about weight training though. I think it depends on the distance. The sprint people seem to need it more than the longer distance ones. I also discovered there's no point running miles and miles if your event is a 5k race. Conversely speaking, always train your race distance. You can't expect to train over 10km and expect to do well at a marathon. No matter how many cans of baked beans you have or muscle building you've done.

My favourite which i see in your book pile is The big book of endurance training and racing by Phil Maffetone. Done wonders for me as a runner in my 60's. PB's in all distances this last year.

Strength training- particularly post 40- is mandatory. You even end up enjoying it, and is a great filler for when you need to take time out for injuries. It also controls weight way more than running.

When you think about it - four (4) 60 min LSD runs and one 60 min zone 5 workout a week - is a lot of zone 5. Six 5 min intervals? Is that 20%? By the clock it is only 10%. In any case, That will put hair on your chest! Or maybe three (3) 80 min LSDs with each closed out with two (2) 5 min zone 5 efforts? Might as well make that an every other day thing as long as recovery allows.
Now when to strength train and how much?

I also highly recommend 80/20 Running by Matt Fitzgerald. It really changed how I train.

I'm a runner and a running coach, so I'm familiar with what literature says and why. Still, I'm not completely sold on the 80/20% concept when it come to recreational runners. My skepticism is based on my personal experience (with myself and my athletes) and a potential flaw in the scientific studies. Those are studies made on elite athletes, who started running in school and dedicated their lives to it: the majority of recreational runners however started much later, well in their adult life. And what all young runners start with? Short and fast distances, not even close to 80/20, so they build a strong fundamental speed recreational runners will never get to with an 80/20 approach. So I find that 65/35, or even 60/40 in early stages, produces more results. With age, speed is also the first thing you are going to lose, so you better work on it today!

This is confusing. I played football for decades and even 20 years ago we used to run 50% zone 3 and spend the other 50% in zone 4/5 by doing football specific drills. Since then football changed massively, players became much more athletic thru all divisions and so the whole game jumped on a new level. Still, I don't see one team who is doing Zone 2 training. Players would laugh because of the low speed and be bored because of the 3-4 times a week 60 min sessions. Instead I see in the prep periods (July and January) many interval runs (4x1000 m in zone 4-5 with a 3 min walk), short sprints and of course football specific drills where a ball is involved. Therefore, for football I would see the 80/20 approach to be 20/80 actually. Appreciate your thoughts.

Because I also do strength training en cycling I just go out for a run twice a week. On Monday and Friday. How can I run 80/20? Now I do 2x a long easy run and 1x a short fast run. Is that okay?

    • @-Stop-it
      @-Stop-it 9 місяців тому +1

I think you should add the cycling and the running together. They are both lower body cardio. How much cycling do you do per week? Are you staying in zone 2 or lower? Any zone 5 cycling?
