- Let’s go back to the 1993 season… and get depressed.
1993 was the death knell for the Redskins ‘80s glory days. The pride of DC and a team used to double-digit winning seasons crumbled to a 4-12 finish. The reasons were many. Their long-time leader, Joe Gibbs, retired following the exhausting ‘92 campaign, handing off an aging and injury prone squad to defensive guru Richie Pettibon. The absence of should-be HOFer Gary Clark robbed the team of a much needed spark, and the ill-advised transition to a playbook focused on short passes with which Mark Rypien was not adept added to the mess. ’93 was a shock to the system for the team, and us fans, with massive change around the corner.
On this October night, however, the Redskins weren’t half bad. Actually, they were, but Washington somehow managed a 14-10 halftime lead thanks to a couple of lucky bounces despite some remarkable ineptness on offense. The second half was a different story - it almost felt like the good old days as the offense came alive while the defense smacked around foul-mouthed Colts QB Jeff George (do you kiss Mr. Snyder with that mouth, Mr. George?). Washington held on for the win, their only RFK victory on ESPN’s Sunday Night Football (which rarely visited DC for whatever reason in those years).
It’s a national TV curtain call for Mark Rypien, Art Monk, Ricky Sanders, and Ernest Byner in front of the hometown fans… all would be gone after this miserable season ended. A few new soon-to-be familiar new names are mixed in here (Tom Carter, Sterling Palmer, and floperoo Desmond Howard) along with 90’s stalwart Brian Mitchell and, of course, Darrell Green who - as always - makes his presence felt.
Mike Patrick and some guy named Joe on the call from beloved RFK stadium, where any win was a pleasure to watch.
These highlights we made from an HD capture from an original 1993 VHS recording, with no AI remastering or other processing needed. A little tracking issues in the first few seconds, but otherwise a lovely recording. (Still haven't solve the frame dropping issue that folds in when youtube processes the videos, but will keep working on it).

One of the very few wins of the season. 93 was the beginning of the doldrums that the Redskins never seemed to get out of.
Love it Darrell Green my favorite skin of all times super nice too me as a kid my uncle Danny Copeland my hero should be out here number 26 I lived with him when he played love this team .
Jeff George yelling at Sean Dawkins was great. I remember watching and laughing at that as a young adult. Thanks for the upload.
In 1993 who would've thought that Jeff George would open the season as the Redskins backup QB 7 years later?
@26:35 Clarence Verdin was a member of the 1987 Redskins that won Super Bowl XXII.
‘93 season started so promising and then ugh… I think we had Rich Gannon later that season..: a shame we didn’t hold onto him
You are the best man. Thank you for preserving these games & memories -- TheDCWolfpack
Jack Kent Cooke cared bout the team ! Also young Colombians!
You can tell they really missed Bobby Beathard and Joe Gibbs.
Though this was the beginning of the losing culture and revolving door at both head coach and quarterback.
I really wish we kept Wychek
As a long time Redskins fan I do enjoy watching this team when they were at least doing OK
before that bum Daniel Snyder came along and ruined them. Glad he is gone and looking
forward now to the 2024 season with Josh Harris and Adam Peters making this team great
again.
When Mike Patrick said that at the 0:44 mark.....all that DEFINITELY needed to be changed. That's why signing Ken Harvey that following off-season was CRITICAL!!
3:55 Darnell green fumble return TD
Lost 6th straight, worst in 30 years...that aint shiiii....since then we've had tons of 4,5,6 straight losses, we definitely topped that ha!!
John Baylor that’s my pops! #36 #ForTheShoe #Bloodline
I wish all the networks wouldn't annoyingly change the camera angle during the play. FOX was really bad about that. We really don't need or want that camera angle behind the end zone on the Green fumble return.
George would spend the end of his career with the Redskins.
Hope to see Cardinals vs Redskins 1997 too.
The 1996 game was even better.
@@fantasticvoyage262 But I think that the Redskins lost both games to the Cardinals in 1996. Close games though.
But if you're talking about Colts vs Redskins 1996, then you're right. It was a better game vs them that year.
@@dxrocks06 I don't care who won. I just remember Esiason throwing for 500 yards in a thrilling OT game.
I personally thought they should have kept Richie Petitbon for a second year. Given a chance I think he would have started winning within 2-3 seasons. Remember Jimmy Johnson went 1-15 his first year with the cowgirls
I think Petitbone was mentally beat after that season, and given what would become of the franchise I think he got the better end of the stick
No new upload the day Snyder is gone? Big sad
Mike Patrick, not Dan.
Right. The description should be changed.
Correction entered. Took a while to recover from the shock that someone reads my writing! Thanks for your watchful eye!
@@RetroSkins No need to be shocked. I enjoy reading the descriptions.
